For years, El Chile Group owner Carlos Rivero has dreamed of opening a Mexican Seafood concept, unique to Austin. After a recent excursion to South America to join his sister on a culinary tour of several countries, Rivero had a revelation – timing was perfect to make his seafood dream a reality. Already positioned on South Austin’s burgeoning restaurant row, Rivero decided the building at 1816 South 1st St (formerly El Chile #2) was the ideal space to house his upcoming project.
Alcomar features cuisine from co-executive chefs Alma Alcocer (of El Alma) and Jeff Martinez (of El Chile). “Alcomar” is a conflation of the two chefs’ last names, but also speaks to the coastal aspect of the menu with “mar,” the Spanish word for “sea.” Together, Alcocer and Martinez have devised a menu sampling regional flavors, ingredients, and dishes from each of Mexico’s coastlines.

Alcomar Ratings and Reviews
It was our first visit to Alcomar although friends had been raving about it for awhile. I loved the decor and cozied up next to my husband on a wall bench to be able to people watch. An eclectic mix of folks from dolled up cuties to laid back outdoor types. The service was great and attentive but the food was the real stand out. We had lobster tacos and the best crispy shrimp ever. Don't forget the sides - cauliflower flan is delicious!
Seated for our reservation right away, but it was odd that no one came to introduce themselves as our server for a good 5 minutes... however after that initial awkward interval, once our server showed up it was great. Service was then timely, pleasant, attentive and the food was fantastic. A twist on high end dining with seafood/Mexican flair. Ambiance was perfect for Valentine’s Day and surprisingly not too loud given the space and crowd size. It was also not cramped which was nice. A great experience after that initial hiccup. A+
Excellent fish dishes from Mexico, very authentic. Service friendly and quick. Noisy at night but not at lunch. Cocktails are excellent with many twists on staples like margaritas. You can sit outside but right next to busy street and so not much fun. Overall, great place for lunch at reasonable prices and unique fare.
The noise level has so high ( it was super loud and we couldn’t hear our own conversation) we had to ask to be moved to a corner table by the bathrooms.
The host did not even look at us, let alone mention one word, he just set our menus in a table.
I was not impressed with the food, the sea bass was amazing but everything else sub par (pozole, octopus tostada and chicken mole taco).
We enjoyed trying some of the new menu options and everything was tasty and cooked right but I thought the batter for the anaheim relleno could have been more flavorful. We noticed the servers did not pick up our appetizer plates as quickly as they should have and our silverware was not replaced. Overall it was an enjoyable dinner experience.
The server was definitely new to his position, but very endearing and clearly making a good effort. Didn’t mess anything up at all, though he did have to confirm things a couple of times, which is way better than guessing (hey, everyone has to start somewhere and he has the right attitude for serving!). The food was phenomenal, though the indoors space was a little too loud - I’ll likely request the patio next time as it’s a little more calm and relaxing. We’ll absolutely be back.
I really enjoy the food and low-key ambiance of Alcomar. The mole chicken is divine as our many of the appetizers--the corvina ceviche and mushroom gorditas, especially. This is a great find--always busy but not the annoying 2 hour waits of so many other restaurants. And well-priced for what it is.
This was my second time dining at Alcomar. Both times I loved the atmosphere and thought the food was delicious. It is a refreshing fusion of traditional Mexican dishes and seafood — something truly unique. The atmosphere is intimate enough for a romantic date or lively enough for dinner with friends. The interior is decorated with lightly stained wooden features and white accents. My only complaint is that I wish our waiter were more welcoming. I would sometimes feel as though we were hurried to order our drinks and food. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and would certainly recommend it for the unique atmosphere and menu.
This place might be my new favorite brunch spot! The watermelon mimosas were delish, along with the chilaquiles with the crab. The only thing that would have made it better would be the potatoes and green salsa that came with the pork dish... mmmm oh my gosh. I'm not even that into beans but theirs were soo good. The 'te amo' drink was the bomb. The only thing that wasn't perfect was that we were placed at a table right by the kitchen.
