For years, El Chile Group owner Carlos Rivero has dreamed of opening a Mexican Seafood concept, unique to Austin. After a recent excursion to South America to join his sister on a culinary tour of several countries, Rivero had a revelation – timing was perfect to make his seafood dream a reality. Already positioned on South Austin’s burgeoning restaurant row, Rivero decided the building at 1816 South 1st St (formerly El Chile #2) was the ideal space to house his upcoming project.

Alcomar features cuisine from co-executive chefs Alma Alcocer (of El Alma) and Jeff Martinez (of El Chile). “Alcomar” is a conflation of the two chefs’ last names, but also speaks to the coastal aspect of the menu with “mar,” the Spanish word for “sea.” Together, Alcocer and Martinez have devised a menu sampling regional flavors, ingredients, and dishes from each of Mexico’s coastlines.

It was our first visit to Alcomar although friends had been raving about it for awhile. I loved the decor and cozied up next to my husband on a wall bench to be able to people watch. An eclectic mix of folks from dolled up cuties to laid back outdoor types. The service was great and attentive but the food was the real stand out. We had lobster tacos and the best crispy shrimp ever. Don't forget the sides - cauliflower flan is delicious!

Service was very slow. Brought us the wrong type of drink, charged us for an extra drink, took forever to get things we asked for, everything took too long. Food was good though.

Seated for our reservation right away, but it was odd that no one came to introduce themselves as our server for a good 5 minutes... however after that initial awkward interval, once our server showed up it was great. Service was then timely, pleasant, attentive and the food was fantastic. A twist on high end dining with seafood/Mexican flair. Ambiance was perfect for Valentine’s Day and surprisingly not too loud given the space and crowd size. It was also not cramped which was nice. A great experience after that initial hiccup. A+

My fiance and I really enjoyed our experience at Alcomar. What really impressed us was the food. It was great! We were surprised with how quickly our appetizers, drinks and food came out. Definitely would want to come back here again!

The food and ambience here were exceptional: a great intimate dining experience. We had the best waitress, Andrea, who was attentive and lovely. We felt very taken care of and left full and happy!

Went for lunch to celebrate our anniversary. Not busy at all and they had a great selection-mostly seafood-which was all great.

The place is super clean and super reasonable prices. Food was fantastic too.

This restaurant is the worst we visited in a while. The food is tasteless, overpriced and has no flavor. We order some scallops and they were horrible. We had to send them back. Not at all an experience.

Excellent fish dishes from Mexico, very authentic. Service friendly and quick. Noisy at night but not at lunch. Cocktails are excellent with many twists on staples like margaritas. You can sit outside but right next to busy street and so not much fun. Overall, great place for lunch at reasonable prices and unique fare.

The noise level has so high ( it was super loud and we couldn’t hear our own conversation) we had to ask to be moved to a corner table by the bathrooms.
The host did not even look at us, let alone mention one word, he just set our menus in a table.
I was not impressed with the food, the sea bass was amazing but everything else sub par (pozole, octopus tostada and chicken mole taco).

We enjoyed trying some of the new menu options and everything was tasty and cooked right but I thought the batter for the anaheim relleno could have been more flavorful. We noticed the servers did not pick up our appetizer plates as quickly as they should have and our silverware was not replaced. Overall it was an enjoyable dinner experience.

The server was definitely new to his position, but very endearing and clearly making a good effort. Didn’t mess anything up at all, though he did have to confirm things a couple of times, which is way better than guessing (hey, everyone has to start somewhere and he has the right attitude for serving!). The food was phenomenal, though the indoors space was a little too loud - I’ll likely request the patio next time as it’s a little more calm and relaxing. We’ll absolutely be back.
