For years, El Chile Group owner Carlos Rivero has dreamed of opening a Mexican Seafood concept, unique to Austin. After a recent excursion to South America to join his sister on a culinary tour of several countries, Rivero had a revelation – timing was perfect to make his seafood dream a reality. Already positioned on South Austin’s burgeoning restaurant row, Rivero decided the building at 1816 South 1st St (formerly El Chile #2) was the ideal space to house his upcoming project.

Alcomar features cuisine from co-executive chefs Alma Alcocer (of El Alma) and Jeff Martinez (of El Chile). “Alcomar” is a conflation of the two chefs’ last names, but also speaks to the coastal aspect of the menu with “mar,” the Spanish word for “sea.” Together, Alcocer and Martinez have devised a menu sampling regional flavors, ingredients, and dishes from each of Mexico’s coastlines.

Our first visit to Alcomar after years of wondering about it. We were early for a 7pm reservation and were seated promptly. Service was fine, although the waitress seemed inexperienced. She did not ask us anything or offer any thoughts on the menu. The food was good. Just not special. The food came very quickly, would have preferred to spread things out more. For the price point, there are more interesting places to eat. Both margaritas I had were quite good.

The food was amazing and our waiter was great! He knew what we wanted before we did and did a great job at recommending us options when we couldn't decide what to get. Great for special occasions when you don't mind splurging a bit on really good food!

I had a great dining experience with my family here. Nice aesthetic and ambiance. Service was good - wait staff were friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. The food came out at a nice pace - enough time to enjoy the appetizer without too long of a lag time before the main course. I had the Lobster Enchiladas with a side of rice and spinach salad. What a colorful plate! And it tasted as amazing as it looked. Perfect portions.

Have to say I was very disappointed about the Ahi tuna tacos. Everything from taste to presentation was sub par. The fish was so over cooked I wouldn’t have known it was tuna if I hadn’t ordered it myself. The waitress didn’t check in often. They were also out of two menu items that we specifically came in for, but the waitress didn’t tell us until after our other items came out.

Went there for the HH to get $1 oysters and they were out of oysters. Very sad.

Best oysters I've had in Austin! Albeit, I'm not out every evening trying oysters but these were fresh and delicious and you can't beat their $1 happy hour special! Happy hour margs were great and their sangria was the legit not overly sweet kind. Ceviche was amazing, and the queso flameado was buttery and delicious. My only complaint was the fact that food and drinks took a while to come out, even for me who tends to be super forgiving regarding stuff like that having worked in the industry myself. They very well just could have been understaffed for the night and it wouldnt keep me from going again for now.

Overall if you're thinking of going, go! You and your palate will not regret it.

I've been to Alcomar twice, the first time was consistently great-- would have left a four or five star review. This time was a different story-- my margarita was strong to the point of not having good flavor-- had to ask for something to dilute it. While the appetizers were really solid (crab guacamole is a standout), our entrees were pretty hit or miss. Lobster tacos were very good as was my husband's chicken taco. My ahi tuna taco was overcooked to the point of being chewy (I thought it was actually chicken when it arrived) and the pineapple/onion blend was odd flavor/texture-wise. The lobster enchiladas were very light on lobster and VERY heavy on onions-- it was extreme. I'm not the type to send food back, but really considered it for the "miss" dishes. Definitely left a bit on the plate.

It's a pretty space and certain dishes are good, but with so many great spots in Austin, not sure if we'll be back.

We were traveling to Austin for the first time. We sat out on the patio and enjoyed a great dinner of Oysters, Redfish, and Lobster burrito. We had the margaritas which were awesome. The service was exceptional as he explained the options and was there just as we needed him. Absolutely try out this place out as it is a short Uber ride from downtown across the Lady Bird Lake in South Austin.

They service was sub par. We had to ask our waiter Kiko or Koki to smile. He was not kind at all, even after we told him we were visiting from Houston. The hostess was nice though.

Gulf oysters reasonable price but didn't taste the freshest.

Green ceviche --wonderful twist on a classic

Queso Flameado--not actually flaming , although I have seen this presentation at other restaurants, maybe something for them to consider.

Taco's over priced and undersized --steak taco wonderful but super spicy heat, Tuna taco--left more to be desired, a so-so taco.

Food was superb. Service was great. What I didn’t understand was an added alcohol tax but when we questioned it they were gracious about it , did not charge the coffee but told us they cannot remove the tax. I did not see that the last time I was there. I love eating there every time I visit Austin and it’s close to my son’s apartment near St Edwards U.

The food was outstanding. Our server was very good and knew her stuff but service seemed a little slow given the fact that there were empty tables. Only chocolate tart was not up to the level of rest of meal. Would definitely go back.

Excellent food and service. Place is a tad on the dark side and (only criticism I have of this otherwise wonderful restaurant) is noisy, as in, very noisy. I'd suggest going early or late (after 9) if you want to have quiet conversation or table conversation.

But, regardless, wonderful food!

I love Alcomar. Have been many times and never walked out anything less than very happy. I went with a group of 5 last Sat night. We originally had a reservation for 6 at 8pm. I was with a group rehearsing and we were running late so I called 15 min before the reservation and pushed it back an hour. We eventually showed up but were a half hour late from that second time, and we were also only 5 people. They could've been mad at us but were nice instead. They let us know the kitchen was closing soon so to order quickly and we did. Food was prompt and excellent! We had a great dinner and stayed way late, and they didn't even run us out or make us feel bad. They were VERY accommodating for a group who made so many last minute changes on a Saturday night! Alcomar is one of my favorites in town. I often go by myself!

It was our first visit to Alcomar although friends had been raving about it for awhile. I loved the decor and cozied up next to my husband on a wall bench to be able to people watch. An eclectic mix of folks from dolled up cuties to laid back outdoor types. The service was great and attentive but the food was the real stand out. We had lobster tacos and the best crispy shrimp ever. Don't forget the sides - cauliflower flan is delicious!
