Alchemy Restaurant and Bar Ratings and Reviews
We had a wonderful experience at Alchemy. Everything was done to perfection - from the server (Peter?), who was probably the best server I've ever encountered and added to our enjoyment of the evening with his engaging and delightful personality - to the appetizers, soup & entrees - all of it was outstanding.
Our experience at Alchemy was very nice. We celebrated a birthday, and there were just two of us dining. We found the menu to be somewhat limited. There were creative menu options, but heavy on the meat side. We started with a Caesar Salad, which was outstanding. One of the best we'd had at a restaurant, ever. For the main course, one of us settled on the pasta dish, while the other had a breast of duck. Both were very tasty, and original in their makeup. However, while the pasta was nice and hot, served in a warm bowl, the duck was not all that warm, in fact it was borderline warm. Seems like the timing was off in the kitchen. That said, it was fantastic.
The dinner was capped off with a butter tart-like pie, with vanilla ice cream. Highly recommend this one too. Fresh Espresso to go along with it, was perfect, and very good quality coffee.
One big suggestion, would be a water filter for the water served at the tables. Ashland water is terrible tasting, and a restaurant of this caliber should only serve filtered water. Filters are not expensive!
Another point of note is the bar, adjacent to the restaurant. Noise does drift up from the bar, and into the quiet dining area. Not a big deal, but not ideal either. Also, for an upscale restaurant, some patrons seem to forget to dress up a bit, or thought they were going to McDonalds perhaps.
All in all, we loved our evening, but a few tweaks could have made it a true 5-star evening.
Unfortunately, this visit was far less than satisfactory. Our server, Peter, maintained a positive attitude while numerous blunders were made. It started with a member of our party waiting far too long for a whiskey on the rocks (how difficult is that?). My salad was completely forgotten, they went from appetizer to entree. And then the food... there was no ask for how the meat was preferred, so when it arrived, one person’s steak was so rare it was unacceptable. Two people received raw scallops. And, FYI: when patrons politely inform you that the scallops are undercooked, not a good idea to respond that “they were prepared correctly, just not to your liking”, that added insult to injury. We have had good experiences in the past, but I will think twice before I return - too many other places to dine well. The attempt to resolve our issues was to offer free dessert.
For the price the value was just not there. I had read a blog and loved the pictures from the menu one week prior so made a reservation for my birthday. Unfortunately, almost none of those items were on the menu one week later. I had the rib eye which came with only a few Chanterelles and figs. It was good but not $34 good. The best thing was the flourless chocolate cake that was a special and not on the menu either. Maybe the Bistro would be a better value.
We have eaten at Alchemy before and always enjoyed both the service and food. The visual presentation along with the intense flavors rivals some of the top rated restaurants in this region. Our waiter, Greg, deserves special mention in that his cheerful demeanor, knowledge and overall attentive service were excellent. 5 stars for Greg!
Good service and warm and cozy ambiance. Salads and soup were great. Service very professional. Two steak dinners were delicious. The mushroom pasta was extremely rich. We mentioned that to our server and he deducted 10 dollars from our bill. Would definitely give this restaurant another go.
I had the rib eye steak, which itself was of high quality.. But the sides were not that good. The fingerling potatoes were ok, but I have tasted much better. Another side was beets marinated in vinegar and then broiled/blackened. Not a taste I care for. Then the sauce was billed as cilantro/pistachio coulis. The result tasted like neither cilantro nor pistachio, and was not a hit in my book. Salads were good, and my wife said the duck was very tasty.
Alchemy is a wonderful dining experience in all aspects. It was our second time there and we requested the same table overlooking the bar/outdoor area (which are separate from the restaurant) and that scene was lively itself. We ate pre-theatre (Oregon Shakespeare Festival) and our meal was served in a timely but unhurried manner. Our server was just super: helpful, checking on a couple of things without prompting, knowledgeable about wines, pleasant. The setting in an inn with several smaller connected rooms - like a house - is very accommodating - you are with other diners but not crowded. The decor is elegant but simple. The crab salad starter had many special touches, also the black cod (with braised fennel) was cooked perfectly and the berry tart with ice cream was so-o-o-o good. We will return next year!
We've been coming to Alchemy for years on our annual Oregon Shakespeare Festival trip to Ashland. Their food is beautifully presented, always interesting, and of the highest quality. Their mixologist is inventive and their wine list holds wonderful surprises.
Out of town visitors and one Ashlander enjoyed excellent food and service for dinner. Noise level for all of the senior citizens was amenable to allow conversation across the round table. All service was attentive but not intrusive. And dining in a Victorian era home was a great experience for the out of towners. Fresh ingredients made all the small plates, including the Wellington sliders and the salads dishes to remember.
Amazing from start to finish. Had a couple cocktails at the bar before heading into the restaurant for an anniversary dinner. Staff was friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. The cocktails were unique and tasty. The food was the star of the show without a doubt. I can't even begin to explain how amazing it was. Go to this restaurant now!
Alchemy exceeded our expectations! Crab cakes, halibut, gazpacho, classic Saphire martini & wine selection were all superb. Dining in a Victorian house provides an intimate, cozy, romantic feel. I wish we had come back for dinner at Alchemy our 2nd night in Ashland as well as the first because the next evening was a huge letdown after having been here. We will absolutely return!
Enjoyed a very fine evening meal in a patio setting. We brought along our very cute Schnauzer for his first meal out with us. He was a hit with the wait staff who were very attentive. The food was excellent and presented well. Creative dishes with appropriate portions. Service was outstanding and the setting was sublime. They know their business.
