I was here about 4 years ago , it has deteriorated quite a bit. The service was absent, the food was mediocre and the prices were average.
I would not recommend this to anyone.

Our waiter was extremely rude, condescending and unpleasant. For most of the meal, there was a screaming baby. We will not be returning and would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Alcala’s healthful and taste budding prix fixe lunch continues to be excellent value , served by warm and cheerful waiters who know the regulars well

Service was inattentive - forgetting to bring drinks and an item ordered. Also a request for no dressing on a salad was not conveyed to the kitchen and had to be sent back. No apologies offered for anything.

Wonderful wine (Ponte de Barca) started out the dinner wonderfully; it took a while for us to get some of our food (the paella) and then it was slightly overdone. The cheese plate was to die for, and the potato frittata was wonderful!

Great happy hour with a nice selection of tapas and drinks at a great price. Bar area was small so I was glad we arrived early.

Food is consistently great. We always do tapas and sangria and that makes for a great meal. All the food is great.

As stated in other reviews, the service leaves much to be desired. I had a reservation but they were clearly still prepping for the dinner crowd, especially when folder napkins were flung down onto our plates after we sat down. The music came on after other patrons arrived and it added to the ambiance. The tapas portions were smaller than I am used to and the white sangria was bland. We asked for bread multiple times, to be told that it was "in the oven" however other tables received theirs before us, the first customers in. No butter was offered and the olive oil on the table was less than remarkable. My dinner companion asked for green tea and it never arrived until my coffee came AFTER dinner. My paella carne was a different recipe than I am used to, not bad but also not as plentiful as anticipated. For the $100 we spent, it was not worth it except for the fact that we could have quiet conversation over dinner.

They told Open Table we never showed up and pretty much treated us as if we weren't there. Pretty sorry place.

The potatoes bravas were very good. The paella was above average. However, the service was awful! We were basically ignored the entire evening. We had to flag people down to ask for something( like a spoon to dish out the paella). There were only 5-6 tables when we were there so it wasn't like they were that busy. Very disappointing service which made the experience unpleasant.

I was there for a business lunch. It is an expensive Spanish restaurant but the food was truly authentic and excellent. My colleague had Gazpacho and Canelones. I had Aguacate and Espada (Swordfish). They were just amazing. We ended with a Trio de Chocolate and expresso. It was hard to walk out of there after such a wonderful meal!

Authentic Spanish cuisine with great atmosphere and reasonable prices. The portions are not huge but just right. Every bite we took was fabulous. We would recommend this restaurant for a true Spanish experience. The Sangria was excellent. The wait staff was good.

Good wine selection and tapas were fun and excellent. Service and staff excellent. We ate early so it was not crowded yet. As in many restaurants tables for 2 are small when you spread out several dishes......not a complaint, just a fact.

we all really liked the atmosphere - the appetizers/tapas were delicious - mushrooms adn the cannelloni recommended by a reviewer but the paella was far from the best paella we have ever eaten - very mushy - the bread and butter were delicious and the service very pleasant

would go back and try something else but not the paella

Will return! First visit to Alcala; can not beat the location just blocks from Grand Central. Although the location drew us, the great food and charming service will bring us back. Fresh, delicious and prepared with care - the chef and staff know what they're doing. Many apparent regulars who seemed right at home on a Friday night. Nice!

A small cozy restaurant. Service was attentive. I had a fish dish that the server recommended. Unfortunately the tomato/onion/sweet pepper sauce on the fish was so strong that the fish was completely overwhelmed. I saw several other dishes served that looked much more interesting -- lighter sauces.

Delicious Spanish food in a small, comfortable setting. We enjoyed very good spinach-shrimp canelones (cannelloni) (available in both a tapas and an entree version), salmon, scallops, and a trio of chocolate mousses. The flan was a bit disappointing. The service was friendly and knowledgeable, but a bit erratic (we had to ask multiple times for water). Still, we definitely expect to be back.

We were staying in the area and hankering for something other than steak, Asian or Italian. Alcala hit the spot. We shared paella and a broiled fish entree preceded by a grilled sardine appetizer. Good red wine too and flan. A cozy intimate restaurant with the flavors of Spain.

We were so happy to find this gem. Located near our hotel was a plus. The food was delicious and we enjoyed everything we were served. Don't expect them to dote on you, as this is the traditional European style of service. They come when you call and they don't bother you when you don't! We will definitively go back to try other interesting dishes.

This wonderful Spanish restaurants features special authentic Spanish dishes not easily round elsewhere paired with terrific Spanish wines. Service is impeccable, and seating for our family birthday group of 8 was perfect for conversations even though the restaurant was full. Near the United Nations, it attracts an international clientele.

Our first time at Alcala but won't be our last. We had 2 tapas a salad and each of us ordered an entre. The chorizo and the sautéed mushrooms were fantastic. I had the tuna which was delicious and my girlfriend had the monkfish. Service was great. Lovely but simple decor and really quiet. I recommend you check it out when you're in the mood for some Spanish cuisine or especially tapas
