My husband and I enjoyed Alan Wong's for dinner and to celebrate his birthday and it was simply amazing. We enjoyed the 5 course tasting menu and each course was better than the previous. We had a hard time discerning which was our favorite course. Probably the ginger crusted Onaga but the shrimp and lobster lasagna was a close second or maybe the tomato soup and sandwich (just awesome!) Our service was superb and a great example of excellent team work. While we had a 5th course dessert as part of the offering, the Waialua Chocolate "Crunch Bars"-fabulous BTW, we were still treated to a birthday dessert and special cookies at the end. We can't wait to come back!

This restaurant has been a favorite of ours for years, and we also go back when we are Honolulu. The reason why I didn’t give it stellar ratings, as usual, is the odd service we got. We were told that there was only one “Da Bag”, one of their signature dishes left and we better grab it. It’s listed as an appetizer for a reasonable price, and our server said it was a different preparation that evening — it had other ingredients. I tried to get him to slow down, as I have a couple of life threatening allergies, and we couldn’t get him to repeat it successfully. He kept saying “it’s for the whole table”, but we told him our friends already ordered their own appetizer and we only wanted an appetizer size. He left, and we were a bit confused. A bit later, however, we started wondering and asked him again what size it was. Still, he was nebulous about it, but we decided to cancel one of our entrees just in case. When it arrived, it was pretty disappointing. It had just 3 small pieces of the promised lobster, King crab, corn and an absurdly small amount of the Kalua pork— just tiny pieces floating at the bottom. There were 5 clams, however. It definitely was NOT enough for 4 people to share as a “large appetizer”, as he described. As we were eating our main course, our came ANOTHER “Da Bag” to the table next to us! When I asked our waiter — “hey, didn’t we get the last one?”, he said “Oh, theirs is different”. I asked how. He said that ours had truffle oil in it. We didn’t taste a speck of truffle oil. When the bill came, our “Da Bag” was a whopping $55!!! That was multiples of what it was in the menu. By then, we were pretty fed up with the whole thing, and my hubby decided not to fight it. Our waiter really should have told us the price up front, which he never did.

On a positive note, the ginger crusted onaka was perfect, as always, and the haupia in chocolate shell was divine.

Word to the wise: Be vigilant and watch out for waiters who try to rush you.

We have been going to Alan Wong's for nearly 20 years, everytime we stay in Honolulu.
We have never been disappointed. We have both his cookbooks.
We were still delighted with the 5 course tasting menu with superb wine pairings.
We went back a second time this trip for the ginger crusted Onaga with miso vinaigrette paired with their signature Riesling. So good.

It's expensive and in a commercial part of town, but the food is out of this world and the service is beyond exceptional. We had the tasting menu with wine pairings. The food was fabulous and the wines were wonderful, and they were great together. We could not finish everything -- the portions are not excessive in size, but they are very rich. Service never missed a beat. The total cost was $350 for two including food, wine, tax and tip, but I would not want to visit Honolulu and miss Alan Wong's -- it's that good.

We enjoyed the prix fixe menu offered for Restaurant Week - Ahi and Shrimp 1, Lobster 2, Filet mignon 3, and Sorbet in chocolate shell 4. All fantastic and the wine pairing was perfection! We went back a week later for the prix fixe menu that features the most popular dishes - Tomato soup served in martini glass topped with foie gras, kalua pig sandwich 1, Lobster and shrimp lasagna 2, Ginger crusted Onaga 3, Short rib with kochu jang sauce 4, Wailua chocolate crunch bars 5. Heavenly and again, the wine paring was perfection! We had early reservations so we sat in the lanai area with the large glass window facing the mountains. Beautiful setting against the blue sky!

We enjoyed our 3 starter, one main course meal for two on a Tuesday night. In town for a week, pleased to find a restaurant with a light and refined touch to each dish. Waiters helpful and accomodating. Highly recommend it.

Second visit at Alan Wong’s.
Creative cuisine, impeccable service. Took menu with wine pairing which ws great fun.
Only comments are pace of service. We were sometimes offered the next wine while the previous one was not finished. We are obviously not in a rush. Second is the menu was exactly the same 2 y apart. There is obviously something to be said about not breaking agood combination but..

One of the most underwhelming dining experiences of my life. I had wanted to go here for years; I regret doing so.

It started off well; the hostess was delightful. The server was pleasant when he first arrived at our table, but then he was basically absent for the remainder of the night.

We were asked to place our entire order at once so the kitchen could space it out for us (makes perfect sense). Only problem: they didn't space it out.

Complimentary bread came about 20 minutes after we were seated.

Our appetizer and salad arrived at the same time (so much for spacing things out).

A food runner came with our dinner while we still were working on our appetizer and salad. He came back three times with our dinner plates and would walk away still with the plates in his hands since we weren't ready (no more than 15 mins after our appetizer was served).

He then came back and cleared our appetizer before we were done. And promptly followed up with our now cold dinners (no joke).

We had pre-ordered wine to be paired with our dinner. We had to ask for it twice. It came about 10 minutes after we were served dinner.

Overall, it was a terrible experience. What was once one of the best restaurants in the world is clearly past its prime. It would be hard to argue that it is still one of the best restaurants in Oahu, no less Hawaii.

We love Alan Wongs and save our visits for very special occasions. For our anniversary last night we were not disappoint ted in the food but our waiter Troy seemed like it was his first night as a waiter. Although we were late due to traffic, we waited 10 minutes for acknowledgement and then only after 3 attempts to flag him down. I hope Troy will provide better service to future guests. Also our guests brought us lei, and when reserving they asked if there was a special occasion, yet our anniversary was never acknowledged during our visit.

Thankfully we love Alan and will continue to support his business. And as always, the food was spectacular and well worth the poor service we encountered. I will always recommend Alan Wongs to anyone who wants a fabulous dining experience.

We chose Alan Wong's for the last night of our week in Hawaii and it was everything we hoped it would be. The food was innovative and extremely well prepared. Everything was delicious. Service was attentive and friendly. This place has a very good reputation and deservedly so. Overall this is the sort of meal one looks forward to for experiencing cutting edge cuisine in a pleasing environment. The restaurant's website doesn't mention it, but there is valet parking available which is a must since the location is not at all conducive to self parking. The $5 valet parking fee is well worth it given the high price of parking elsewhere in Honolulu.

We were celebrating our arrival in Hawaii and the tasting menu was totally grand. We had one order with wine and one without and it was perfect for two people, where one was driving. They were so gracious about having us share the wine. We felt quite pamperpered.

This venue was highly referred by friends, where I cancelled my normal birthday venue to give this place a try. Reservations was at 7:45pm, where we were taken in promptly. Once getting seated, this is a narrative of my experience. After sitting around for 10mins, we finally got water around 7:55pm. It was not till 8:15pm where we were acknowledged by the waiter, and it was during this time where I have looked over the menu multiple times to a point where I can rehearse the items. The waiter kindly apologized for the wait. After being greeted, the waiter then without hesitance said to please look over the menu again. It was not till 8:45pm where we have placed the orders. 8:50pm bread was received. 9:00pm appetizers came out, which were amazing. 9:30pm entrees came out, short rib was a little over seasoned and unfortunately my partner got a little sick from her seafood platter dish. 9:55pm we got our dessert, which were excellent (The Coconut), but the crunch bar was bathed with too much Cocoa powder. We did not leave the venue till 10:30pm. I would definitely give this venue another try, unfortunately my partner has other thoughts.

The food was pretty good (with the exception of the short rib being overly sweet) and the ambience was amazing, but was not impressed by the service as both our servers seem arrogant and not personable from the moment they realized we are not ordering wine and only hot water and two cocktails. Made us left feeling disappointed and regretted leaving too much tips (20%) which they didn’t deserve.

It was our last night in Honolulu and we were hoping it would be a nice ending to our family trip since so many people we knew had recommended this place, unfortunately we left feeling quite the opposite with the insincere attitudes from the waiters.

Wongs highly recommended by a friend. Had to wait for a reserved table, no waiting area except for a seating cube for two, initially seated by the kitchen service swinging doors, could see dishwasher from my table. Requested a new table. My party of three ordered fish, the opakapaka signature dish was spoiled and had to be returned for which the server confirmed its odor. Patron who ate partial opakapaka had gastrointestinal issues two hours after consumption. Diner was comped for the bad fish but no amount of money can deal with midnight visits to the bathroom. #recovering.

There is a reason why it is difficult to get a reservation here. The menu is creative but approachable, the food and flavors are outstanding, and the service is gracious without being obtrusive. Our party of four were all quite pleased with their dinners to the point that I would assume that every menu item is a great choice. I wouldn't come back to Honolulu without eating here.
