I’ve been wanting to try Alan Wong’s original restaurant for five years after dining at Alan Wong’s Pineapple Room five years ago. I went with his most asked for dish- Ginger Crusted Onaga. I was not disappointed. However, next time I will make sure that I bring my appetite and have the sampling menu so that I have a chance to experience a wider range of flavors/dishes. Reservations are a must. Online they are done via Open Table and require a credit card to make the reservation. If you are a no show there is a fee.

Restaurant needs an update. Looks very 1990’s - especially the lighting. Did tasting menu- waited 25 minute between 2nd and 3rd course. Was about to leave. Food was great, but honestly- for the price and the hype I expected MUCH more. Nicer atmosphere, better attention to timing of courses. Also- tons if waiter foot traffic. Felt very busy- yet had to wait forever.

Outstanding service Alan Wong!
From the time we arrived and greeted by the valet to the time we drove off your staff were exceptional.
Everyone was so courteous, attentive, and professional which made our dining experience memorable.
And a big Mahalo to the person that called us on day of our reservation with a friendly reminder. She also took my request to see if we could sit next to another couple visiting from California we found out that was going to be there that evening. There was no promises but we ended up sitting next to each other which made that evening very special.
It was a dining experience not to be forgotten.
Thank you very much!

Alan Wong's is simply outstanding. The staff are well trained in handling the great variety of guests. Reservations are a must. The food preparation and presentation is as good as it gets.

We have eaten at Alan Wong's on every visit to Honolulu (~4 times). We loved the food and so brought my brother and his wife there for a special occasion -- their first visit to Alan Wong's. The service was outrageously bad. We ordered two salads and two of their special appetizers (poke on avocado) -- two things that require no cooking. They had not delivered the first course after a 45 minute wait. Finally, we asked where were our appetizers, and the appetizers appeared about 3 minutes later. Some of our main courses were wonderful, but for one, the fish was clearly over-salted. Despite their poor service, they did not offer any compensation..maybe an extra tidbit or an apology. Sorry, we are never returning again, and we will tell our friends that Alan Wong no longer cares about its customers.

We celebrated a birthday, and Alan Wong's Restaurant did a great job to help us. Not only a specially made birthday cake but a menu signed by the staff as well. Nice touch!

Despite having made reservations, we still had to wait to be seated. There was strange smell, maybe of the foods, not sure. Service was subpar, they took too long to place drink orders, food and there check in’s were lapsed. The food was mediocre, I had the red snapper. The presentation was nice but the the actual taste was not so great. I am in Hawaii vacationing with my girlfriend and I’m sure we won’t be back here.

Wonderful celebration dinner. The service made us feel very special. The food was fantastic and a special mention must be made for ‘ the Coconut ‘ dessert. We ate at some fantastic restaurants in Honolulu and Kauai and this was one of our favourites.

Phenomenal experience. Had hoped for a memorable evening and did not disappoint. Used to dine here when we lived in Honolulu over 10 years ago, and was happy to see that they are still the top restaurant on the island. Went with my family of 4 and all of us were very pleased with our selections and the evening in general. Service was excellent - friendly, professional and helpful (not stuffy nor obsequious, neither of which I care for). Prices are high, but the quality and service is in line with what they charge. A MUST for a special occasion dinner, or just a night to treat yourselves.

Like an aging starlet, Alan Wong's has lost its mojo. When we first dined there 15 years ago, the place dripped with elegance and class. Over the past 15 years, it has steadily declined to the point where a major overhaul needs to take place, or it just needs to quietly fade into retirement. First, the menu is virtually the same as it was 15 years ago; second, the servers wear name tags, which screams "Applebees"; and finally, any dress code which may have been unspoken but respected in the past has evidently been thrown out the window- there were grown men in shorts and t-shirts dining at 7:30pm. One of the salad items had "toasted quinoa" on it- it was not toasted, it was raw and extremely chewy (not crunchy), and ruined the salad.
The absence of the Chef is very apparent, and the lack of discernible standards and quality was very disappointing. We won't be coming back. Sad.

Recommended to us by friends, one of whom grew up on Oahu, we looked forward to this special meal during our first Hawaiian vacation. We all had the chef' tasting menu, and the kitchen was willing an able to modify one course for one person at our table that is not a fish eater. Every course was outstanding, especially the first course which was soup and sandwich with a "grilled cheese" - with grilled mozzarella cheese & kalua pig over a chilled soup in a martini glass; the waiter introduced it as the best grilled cheese we will ever have, and I have to say he was right. The service was also at just a high a level to match.

Not sure how often we will get to Honolulu, but every time we do I will try to get a reservation at Alan Wong's

I eat out 4-5 times a week. I always highly valued your restaurant, recommending to many of my friends. I was surprised to see many open tables. When i received a call to confirm my reservation that day, the girl made it sound like the only way to bring 2 more people was to come a hour earlier. I was surprised to see the open seats when i arrived. Each year, i usually treat my family of 20 plus to restaurants like yours each month. The food this time was terrible compared to previous years. Lighting was bad. I had a hard time seeing what i was eating. I was using my phone to increase the lighting for my mother so she could see what she was eating. I hope the lack of quality is not the cause of filling your seats. I hope the best for your business.

Every course was a culinary delight and my son was even able to order a bottle of wine for us over the Internet from Barbados. All in all a night to remember!

My husband and I enjoyed Alan Wong's for dinner and to celebrate his birthday and it was simply amazing. We enjoyed the 5 course tasting menu and each course was better than the previous. We had a hard time discerning which was our favorite course. Probably the ginger crusted Onaga but the shrimp and lobster lasagna was a close second or maybe the tomato soup and sandwich (just awesome!) Our service was superb and a great example of excellent team work. While we had a 5th course dessert as part of the offering, the Waialua Chocolate "Crunch Bars"-fabulous BTW, we were still treated to a birthday dessert and special cookies at the end. We can't wait to come back!

Food is fabulous but service is severely lacking.
Bread at the beginning was cold and not tasty at ALL. They need to fix this because it set the precedence.

Appetizer: poke balls - very creative crispy wonton preparation and spicy tasty tuna filling. We really enjoyed this dish and the sauces with it were perfect.

ONE HOUR LATER! I kid you not. We were often ignored and no one came to check on us. It is a small restaurant and I finally just asked someone cleaning up the table next to us what was going on.

Entree: GINGER CRUSTED ONAGA, - light and tasty.
PAN STEAMED OPAKAPAKA - the pork hash and broth were so perfect with this fish.
We loved the entrees but we waited for so long between the app and entree it was ridiculous. A table seated after us finished before we did.
Dessert: Haupia shave ice - wow really cold, tapioca interesting, flavor OK. Overall an odd dessert and would not get again.

I usually don’t rate on open table but this might be helpful for diners, as a regular gourmet eater I was quite disappointed:
My boyfriend and I had the tasting menu, which consisted of 5 courses, incl. vine paring.
The first four courses were good or excellent - which should be expected when dining at Alan Wong‘s.
The reason our rating is not higher is due to the follwing:
- the courses were served with no or hardly any break in between.
- the quality of vines for the vine paring was not adequate.
- the dessert was disappointing

This restaurant has been a favorite of ours for years, and we also go back when we are Honolulu. The reason why I didn’t give it stellar ratings, as usual, is the odd service we got. We were told that there was only one “Da Bag”, one of their signature dishes left and we better grab it. It’s listed as an appetizer for a reasonable price, and our server said it was a different preparation that evening — it had other ingredients. I tried to get him to slow down, as I have a couple of life threatening allergies, and we couldn’t get him to repeat it successfully. He kept saying “it’s for the whole table”, but we told him our friends already ordered their own appetizer and we only wanted an appetizer size. He left, and we were a bit confused. A bit later, however, we started wondering and asked him again what size it was. Still, he was nebulous about it, but we decided to cancel one of our entrees just in case. When it arrived, it was pretty disappointing. It had just 3 small pieces of the promised lobster, King crab, corn and an absurdly small amount of the Kalua pork— just tiny pieces floating at the bottom. There were 5 clams, however. It definitely was NOT enough for 4 people to share as a “large appetizer”, as he described. As we were eating our main course, our came ANOTHER “Da Bag” to the table next to us! When I asked our waiter — “hey, didn’t we get the last one?”, he said “Oh, theirs is different”. I asked how. He said that ours had truffle oil in it. We didn’t taste a speck of truffle oil. When the bill came, our “Da Bag” was a whopping $55!!! That was multiples of what it was in the menu. By then, we were pretty fed up with the whole thing, and my hubby decided not to fight it. Our waiter really should have told us the price up front, which he never did.

On a positive note, the ginger crusted onaka was perfect, as always, and the haupia in chocolate shell was divine.

Word to the wise: Be vigilant and watch out for waiters who try to rush you.

We have been going to Alan Wong's for nearly 20 years, everytime we stay in Honolulu.
We have never been disappointed. We have both his cookbooks.
We were still delighted with the 5 course tasting menu with superb wine pairings.
We went back a second time this trip for the ginger crusted Onaga with miso vinaigrette paired with their signature Riesling. So good.

It's expensive and in a commercial part of town, but the food is out of this world and the service is beyond exceptional. We had the tasting menu with wine pairings. The food was fabulous and the wines were wonderful, and they were great together. We could not finish everything -- the portions are not excessive in size, but they are very rich. Service never missed a beat. The total cost was $350 for two including food, wine, tax and tip, but I would not want to visit Honolulu and miss Alan Wong's -- it's that good.
