We were thrilled to obtain a same day reservation at the award winning Alan Wongs and had a superb experience. From the moment we arrived the staff was gracious, helpful and shared their thoughts on special items etc. The meal itself was beautifully presented and - as anticipated - delicious. Highly recommend!
Food was excellent! Would just suggest spacing out the courses a little. Everything came a little too fast.
We visit Honolulu once a year. For the past decade Alan Wong had been a must for each visit. It never disappoints.
Where to start. This restaurant deserves the good press it has gotten. My friend and I arrived at 5:45p and were treated to a 5 star eating experience that took about 2.5 hrs. We ordered the fixed price 5 course meal and the wine pairings. Oh my. Innovative and excellent are two words that come to mind. Whenever we go to Honolulu from now on (we live on the Big Island of Hawaii), we will make this a go-to dining experience.
Food and service were both excellent
Food was good but had to wait a while for it. Drinks were great. Service was exelent.
Staffs were really attentive! Foodand wine were spectacular! We were blown away by service and I was surprised that they took the initiative of splitting all of our entrees knowing that we are sharing. They also surprised us with amazing wine pairing recommendations which we love! :)
Its been many years since we last visited, and it was even nicer than I recall. The place runs flawlessly, with timely professional but not overbearing or rushed service, and perfectly executed classic and delicious dishes. Overall it’s such a very good value for the overall quality of the experience. It no longer seems cutting edge but it provides a wonderful experience of what has become classic modern Hawaiian cuisine. It will be on our “must visit list” during future Oahu stays.
Alan Wong’s has moved on. The signature menu has been condensed and newer choices prevail that just didn’t look that appealing. Drawing on nostalgia, we had the Alan Wong’s favorites tasting menu. All items were very good, except for the short rib. An earlier review suggested it was pot roast instead of a short rib and, truth the told, we couldn’t disagree. The chocolate crunch bar dessert is still wonderful, but miniaturized and thin crunch bar just doesn’t taste as good as a thick crunch bar. Although our tea order was forgotten, overall service is still strong as it serves a full house.
Forgot to serve our coffee with dessert. But never mind, the Coconut was so good we ate all of it even though full and with the comped birthday cake.
Very limited menu half of which was beef. Out of the one fish that wasn’t seafood. Totally tasteless green salad. Ice cream for dessert was delicious but tiny portion. Our waitress was great in trying to make things as reasonable as possible
Amazing tasting menu. Lobster lasagne a standout . Chocolate Dessert trio simply sublime
I can't fault the food and the table service, I feel the overall vibe lacks character. For a restaurant that advertises itself on being an upmarket restaurant, I expected a lot more of a feeling of intimacy. We arrived on time but still had to wait for the table. We were given the opportunity to wait in want I felt was a sad excuse for a waiting area. No invitation to have a drink at the bar.
I also feel that I shouldn't be sold anything by the waiters other that our food or wine. I don't want to be sold a cook book even before trying the food.
One again, the food was beautiful and lived up to my expectations.
Very attentive staff, friendly, and responsive. Enjoyed the professional explanation of each drink and dish as they placed it on the table. Memorable experience!
I highly suggest getting the tasting menu ($89, $134 w/wine pairings).
We had 4 or 5 dishes and each one was amazing, the flavours and quality were outstanding. Great menu.
We both had the tasting menu with the wine selections included, and ever course was better than he last! Absolutely a wonderful evening.
Excellent wine pairing/tasting menu....a must if dining here. Everything tasted wonderful.
We had the tasting menu with the wine pairing and everything was outstanding. One of the better meals we’ve ever had. Worth the drive to find it. Valet parking was very helpful as well.
Everything was super delicious but too rich because we felt sick after.
Amazing! Can’t wait to come back
Great localicious tasting menu. There was a delay in getting the last course out. Great food and friendly service.
Absolutely one of the best dining experiences ever! Food was out of this world and service was incredible! Can’t wait to return!
5 Courses 1 Very Good, 4 Outstanding. Excellent wine pairings, great service
Great food and great service. Nothing great as far as views. Definitely expensive, but worth it.
The service was top notch, the food was amazing, and the personalized menu with our names on it for our anniversary was just great.
Spectacular tasting menu (w/ wine paring) and exceptional service made this an unforgettable dining experience. Alan Wong's exceeded all expectations!
Alan Wong’s is always a great place for celebration and a special date night. We had the tasting menu which was excellent tasting and presentation. Service was also top notch as usual.
Wonderful food and excellent service.
Amazing as always. Never a bad meal! Was so excited to take my colleagues to try my favorite place on the island.
Amazing food. Tasting menu is a must with wine pairing. The wines perfectly complemented the food. The best food and service we’ve had in HI. Thank you to the team at Alan Wongs.
It was really really slow because they overbook. There is no lobby to wait in so their system of making you wait a half hour by the elevator is very tedious. We eat here once a year and for the first time it feels like they are resting on their laurels. There are so many new alternatives to eating at Alan Wongs that we are sad about our dinner last night. Kinda like the end of an era.
Great food, uninspired service. From the bread to the appetizers, the entrees, and the dessert, everything was impeccable...except the French pressed coffee, which was pressed too soon, and turned out weak and watery. Service was efficient, but did not feel caring or personal. It's gone downhill since our visit last summer. The staff kept our glasses refilled, but routinely removed plates as we were chewing our last bites...not cool. I'm not sure what's going on there (new management, or not enough management), but I felt like the employees were either burned out, or were being pushed to perform, leaving them impersonal yet efficient. Too bad, this is, IMHO, the best food on the island. One goes to such a place for not just the food, but the experience. Having abrupt servers lessened the enjoyment of our anniversary dinner.
We visited on our honeymoon. The service here is stellar. Riley was available, but didn’t hover, and the entire staff was available if we needed anything. They printed part of the menu as congratulations and then rolled it up for us to take with us. And I haven’t even started on the food yet. We did the prefix menu, and it was perfect. I don’t eat pork so they did a substitution for me, and my husband said the grilled cheese was intense. Every part of the meal was well balanced - and you get a lot of food for the prefix price. We had to pack up portions of our last two courses we were so full! (Helpful hint: bring a sweater or jacket. It was very very cold in the restaurant. I didn’t have one and wished I did. There were a handful of women in the restaurant desperately clinging to scarves. The cold even distracted me from the dining experience.)
Terrific as always!
Great service food was excellence what more can I say it was fantastic
AMAZING!!!!!! The food, the staff the tasting menu, the wines ..everything . We celebrated our anniversary here, and we have an amazing keepsake that we frame. This place is better is worth the trip to Honolulu alone lol
We had the tasting menu paired with wines, with mixed reviews. Of the plates, the fish course was a little overdone and dry. The short ribs though were exceptional. The wine pairings were less then inspired for our taste A sweet reisling with the fish just didn’t work and the Beaujolais tasted like water with the richness of the short ribs. Perhaps just ordering separately would be a better option
Returned to Alan Wong's for our fifth visit, and the second time celebrating my birthday. As with each prior visit the service was impeccable. Contrary to some reviews, we were seated right on time and greeted by many staff with a Happy Birthday greeting. My wife had the seafood cakes as her appetizer. I liked them, she loved 'em. I had the ahi salsa stack. Both were excellent but my ahi/guacamole stack with aioli and greens is something I look forward to every time. The flavors blend so smoothly with just the right bite! For entrees, my wife had the clams and shrimp pasta dish and asked it to be kicked up just a bit in spiciness. It was fabulous. We ended up sharing it because it was simply better than the Keahole Lobster and seafood over orzo that I had. Mine was Very good, but her's was better, IMHO. We finished with a slice of their birthday cake and another chocolate crunch dessert that was also excellent.
All in all, Alan Wong's never disappoints. We will return as often as we can. BTW, try the chef's counter if you can sometime. so much fun watching the cooking and preparation.
