We specialize in fresh seafood in generous portions. Come and visit us on Wednesday evening when you can "Bring Your Own Wine" and corkage fees are waived. In the last nineteen years, we have become a neighborhood favorite for a delicious meal at a great price. When Michael Bauer reviewed us he said, "Good seafood value at Alamo Square." and "The owners of Alamo are veterans at offering good food at great value." as well as "Snapper, salmon, tuna, swordfish, and petrale sole are all priced at $15.50 for a generous half-pound portion. Even with nothing else on the plate, it would be a good deal, but when you add the myriad side dishes, it's astounding."

After walking past this restaurant (before opening time) so often, I finally synchronized things to eat here. It will certainly not be the last time. The nightly special was a generous portion of blackened trout, with rice and vegetables. The dinner salad was a bowl of fresh greens, with a topping of shaved fennel. Dessert was a tasty meringue, with pomegranate seeds and a warm caramel sauce. Add in a couple of glasses of wine (1/2 price on Tuesdays), and it's a fantastic value for wonderful food. I can't wait to return, and to try a number of the choices of fish, cooked in any of a number of ways. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. Why did I wait so long?!?
This is a wonderful neighborhood gem, but worth the drive. It is an EXCELLENT value. My friend and I chose the daily "prix fixe" which was: a lovely mixed green salad or wonderful cauliflower soup; an entree of blackened trout with a lovely beurre sauce, rice and vegetables perfectly cooked: not hard and not mushy. Dessert was what is known in English as "floating island", a custard sauce topped with toasted meringue and caramel. We each had a glass of wine. The per person total with tax and tip was $35! I look forward to recommending it in my role as an independent tour guide and concierge.
I've been here before and always enjoyed a great meal with nice service. Our server was untrained but fine- the FOOD was not good. Salad a zero, nothing to it with a dressing that didn't add anything. Oh, and the fish special, usually so good, was not. The dessert fell flat as well. so sorry
second visit in recent months. I need to remember to not go again. my steak was over cooked and very unpleasant. should have sent it back. snails had no garlic butter in the shell with them. garlic butter was on the dish to hold shells. floating island was decent but not the best I have had. no one in the eatery outside me for over an hour. used to be very good.
This is, of course, a great place for fish. They have other options, but that's the focus. The night we were there you could choose from four different types, prepared four different ways, with 5 different sauces. We both liked the idea of trout, and it turned out that blackened trout with beurre blanc was the "prix fixe" special, so we went for it. That made for excellent value, adding soup or salad plus a very elegant dessert (floating island, which I don't recall every having before). To be fair, the serving size was a little small for my taste, but a trout is a trout, and it was fresh and perfectly prepared.
This is not a gourmet restaurant in the sense of fine dining. But this restaurant is very good eating at a very reasonable choice. For example, I don't like many restaurant crab cakes because they always have filler. Not here. The crab cakes were crab and good. They also have several fish and they cook it and sauce to your choice. The Tiramisu desert was out of this world. Great Place.
This is an excellent restaurant for the menu price. For San Francisco, I would have expected to pay at least 50% more, given the quality. The food was fresh and delicious. My wife and teenage daughter were very happy as well. Next time we are in SF, a stop at the Alamo will be on the itinerary.
Waited one hour before anyone took our order and had to ask three times for water refills.
Two of us ordered the Risotto, it looked and tasted like a can of Campbell's chicken and rice soup.
We asked for separate checks, waitress said she could not accommodate the request, but could take separate credit cards. It was a fiasco when the check arrived, we are still not sure what we actually paid.
We won't be going back.
We all enjoyed the food. However, dining out is a whole experience that includes service first, then the food. The two are two halves to a whole. If one half is bad it ruins the the whole experience. The food half was very good. The service half left me feeling slighted. The front end needs work, a lot of work. Unprofessional and surly. I won't be going back nor would I recommend to my friends, my enemies, maybe.
We had a delightful dinner at the Alamo Square Seafood grill last Wednesday and it was Wonderful as usual - the food was great especially the escargo! Can't wait to return. The owner is very charming and ads a special personality to the experience. Everything was great!
Great little gem in the city. Amazing prices and great ambiance. The service was perfect. We went on a Wednesday for the free corkage night (highly recommend). The food was good but could have been much better if it wasn't so salty. If I go back, I would ask for less, or no, salt. Other than that it was a fantastic experience.
The restaurant was not full but very loud. We split the crab cakes and there was one lump of crab the rest a mixture that wasn't great.
If I return I would go for the fish prepared with various choices and a selection of sauces.
Great place! The food was delicious and the ambience pleasant but unpretentious. Good value. The restaurant's location near Alamo Square means it feels more like a neighborhood bistro than many city places. We especially enjoyed the carpaccio appetizer and the seafood stew. The night we ate there the staff seemed a bit short-handed, but this didn't detract much from our overall positive experience.
This famous seafood and grill restaurant started operating punctually at 17:30 and I was among the first customers. They had a fixed price three-course menu - a great bargain at $16.95 - but I didn't feel like having blackened trout or floating island; sipped a Bellini and was delighted with the tuna carpaccio which was so fresh that there was a tinge of light sweetness to it and was great with cheese and salad. The mixed seafood platter came with pasta in carbonara - the portions were generous and the sauce very creamy. Dessert was peach crumble with ice cream - a crispy sweet end to this very satisfying dinner at $46.28 (gratuity not included).
We've been coming to this once charming restaurant from the day it first opened, coming here about 2-6 times per year, making NUMEROUS recommendations to neighbors and visitors...until now.
Beyond being incredibly short-staffed so there was a ridiculously long wait time to even get water, the restaurant seemed discombobulated. Our young male server didn't acknowledge me or peep a word despite me politely saying hello two times. My guests joked maybe the third time would be the charm.
The restaurant was hit with a large reservation group of 14 seated next to us at the same time. While we waited for our first course appetizers, our poorly trained server placed that table's dirty appetizer dishes on our table!!! I'm not making this stuff up! Please properly train this young man or get him out of the restaurant industry.
I would have sent back my prix fixed dinner which I've ordered several times (ordered it a week prior), but I was TOO hungry after a 40 minute wait! The veggies were swimming in oil, as was the sole, which was appalling overcooked, and honestly, the portion size was more like an appetizer. Far smaller than what I've ever ordered over the past decades.
The whole experience at this once amazing, charming restaurant was beyond 'poor', but that rating doesn't exist on Open Table.
Don't even bother with this place anymore. The owners really don't give a hoot about this place anymore, so why should we?
