Alachi Masala Ratings and Reviews
The chicken biryani was excellent, as was the chana saag. The only thing that I can say anything negative was a loud baby. After that party left, it was actually quiet enough to carry on a decent conversation, and quit pleasant. The meal was delicious. Service was very good, and I will definitely return.
as promised by the other reviews, alachi masala offers very good (and to me authentic) indian food. i can see that when it is crowded, it might be a less pleasant experience than what we had (it is small, and the tables are close together)...but we were fortunate to have very few other diners in the place when we went, so it was quiet and cozy.
service is friendly and accommodating, altho surprisingly slow for having so few diners. i was glad that i had been warned that it's byob (rather than finding out when i got there, and having to hunt down something more thrilling than water or juice to drink). i must say that the mango lassi was outstanding...and the rest of the food quite good--well seasoned (you can choose your level of spiciness) and well prepared (altho the portions weren't generous ones).
we will probably go back for takeout, rather than eating in next time, however. the ambiance is somewhat lacking--altho don't know how it cd be made much better in that space....
Great place for a casual meal- BYOB makes it a great value also- the place is small but cozy- and the service is attentive and good. The portions are ample (Usually have enough to take home) and very tasty. I would recommend- it is a great neighborhood find.
Alachi Masala serves top notch Indian food in its small Upper Westside restaurant. Service is quick. Two meat dishes and two vegetable dishes were plenty for four people eating family style. The cost is quite reasonable. Highly recommended for a casual dinner. Reservations are recommended, especially for a party larger than 4.
The food was excellent. Three apps and three mains (plus an order of Papadam to start then raita and garlic Naan during the meal) was the perfect amount of food for four hungry men. It's entirely possible that the four bottles of wine we brought may have colored this review :)
Food is great as usual. Dishes don't seem to be cleaned too throughly (based on this and several other dining experiences here). Had to as the server for clean glasses twice (water ans wine glass). Service was great, and my request was promptly attended to.
This is my second time at Alachi Masala...the first was on a whim with a group of friends for New Years, and that's all it took for me to become hooked on this place. It's a very cozy place (but then again, I find that most of the best places in Manhattan are usually tucked away), the service is great, food is amazing and there is a BYOB policy with NO corkage fee, which instantly gains Alachi Masala points!!! What I particularly liked was the fact that despite being very small restaurant, at no time (on either occasion) was my party rushed out the door once we had finished eating. There's nothing like having a great meal and then the entire experience is ruined by a host/hostess/server who does everything they can to get you out so they can seat more customers! Overall, my dinner companion and I had a wonderful time and will be back, very soon! 5 stars for Alachi Masala!
The restaurant is very small but reasonably decorated. The initial impression was marred by a less than friendly hostess. The waiter made a mistake with a food order and tried to put the blame on us.
However, when the food came it was delicious, as good as the curry houses of my youth in England.
I had a delicious lamb dish and my dining partner had chicken korma which was delicately spiced and very flavorful.
The restaurant is conveniently located on Amsterdam in the West 80's. We were there on a Friday evening and it was a ver vibrant scene.
went here for a reunion dinner with 10 other friends, and had a great time! the service was wonderful, very laid-back for manhattan. the fact that you can BYOB and there's no corkage fee is practically unheard of in Manhattan, and very conducive to the occasion and our budgets. the food was not outstanding, but totally solid and came out quickly. highly recommend Alachi Masala for an inexpensive fun group dinner.
I love the area that this restaurant is in. Their meat is always tender and juicy and the naan is spectacular. I also love that it is BYOB with no corking fee. It is a cheap, quiet, hidden gem. So much so that I almost don't want to write a review because I would love to keep it all to myself. My girlfriend and I go at least once a month. It is always quiet and the food is always delicious.
I am new to the neighborhood and simply desired some Indian food. We walked in and simply took a chance even though it wasn't crowded. We came in relatively early and by the time we left, it was packed. The food was good, the waiters were attentive, and no one rushed you out. We came back at a later time and made a reservation since it was a Saturday night. There were larger parties. It's in the neighborhood and I will definitely come here as one of my neighborhood restaurants....good food....
We were searching for an indian in the Upper West side and thought we had won a watch with this 'Bring your own booze' number ten blocks from the hotel. We weren't expecting it to be too busy on a tuesday night at 8:30pm, and it was, as expected, very quiet. The lighting was ambient, and we made a romantic night of it, but the staff were very quiet, pleasant, but not as friendly as the other reviews had suggested. the food wasn't what we expected. it was very reasonably priced but the portions were very small. We over-ordered, a sharing starter and three curries to share. However the food wasn't particularly warm, there wasn't enough rice and two out of three curries were pretty bland and generally not great. BYOB good idea. Has potential.
