Al Fresco Italian Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Overall: 3 out of 5 because from time we took a seat to the time we got food was over an hour. The food was alright, not what I was expected compared to the cost.
Pro: Wife enjoyed her dish.
-The bread they give was overcooked, but requested second one was softer.
-I got the Meatball and spaghetti, and it tasted bland.
- Calamari was rubbery, had a lot better at other Italian restaurant's.
The food and wine were excellent. The service, however, was a little lacking. I understand that it was Valentine's Day and the restaurant was very busy, but there was a table behind us that was seated after us but received much quicker service. They had their salads before our server had even asked to take our food order (we had the same server). They were ordering dessert when our entrees were brought out. Perhaps they received preferential treatment because they were regulars. At any rate, I will give it another chance on a less busy night, only because the food was so good and my friend who recommended it in the first place has assured me that this is not typical of her many experiences there.
We had dinner after the theater Saturday night. The restaurant was full, but we were seated immediately. They were still honoring the Restaurant Week menu so we all chose a selection from that. The meals were good and the portions were generous. The bread served with the meal is great, especially when right out of the oven. The real standout is the tiramisu -- outstanding.
I celebrated my birthday with a family dinner at Al Fresco and the entire party thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. We were promptly greeted upon arrival despite the dining room being busy. We were sat immediately even being 15 minutes early for our reservation time. Our server Alejandro took great care of us making sure we had what we needed throughout the meal. The food was amazing! Truly the best Italian food I’ve had in Hampton Roads. We will definitely be going back and I’ve already referred friends there for Valentine’s Day celebrations.
Al Fresco is my new favorite restaurant. We dined there by mistake one day while looking for another restaurant that had been recommended. We were so lucky to stumble upon this wonderful dining experience. The food is absolutely incredible. The service is friendly and professional. I can't wait to revisit this place and have another great meal.
Went with my family for dinner. We felt like we were being rushed the whole time. We couldn’t sit back and enjoy our dinner and time together. The owners kids were running around the restaurant. Food was definitely not worth the high prices. Who installs smelly carpet on a restaurant and charge $30 a plate?
The dinner was a family treat so we had three little ones with us. We were served appetizers and salads right away. Our main dishes took a while to arrive due to the waitress not putting in our main orders but because we had the appetizers and bread/salad we were able to keep the little ones happy. Overall great experience. Restaurant treated us to dessert for the long wait for our main course.
We weren’t acknowledge upon arrival, sat ourselves and weren’t provided menus until asked, food was lovely but Hair in the water, waitress said no one worked there with that color hair and we saw another waitress walk by with that color (whether it was hers or not he waitress lied) I’ve had two other wonderful experiences, this one not so much
I only gave a less than great review because the service was so bad on this occasion. It took 30 minutes for her to take our order and we were dining late so I was very hungry. Otherwise, it’s a great restaurant. A bit pricey for a big bowl of pasta and very little meat but tasty.
My partner and I go to Al Fresco many times during the year. Their food is mostly northern Italian and delicious. I lived in Italy for 3 years so I can confirm the authenticity of the preparation and taste. Vince is an outstanding presence there. He works hard and makes your eating experience super special. He has a great number of dedicated followers who only want to sit in his section! He sings to you when the occasion merits and on birthdays, gets everyone to sing along. You also get a free dessert which are VERY yummy! While it is not inexpensive to eat there, the portions are fairly large and combined with delicious menu offerings, it is well worth it! Ellen is also amazing! She knows all the regulars but greets everyone with the same welcoming friendliness that you normally don't get in other restaurants. I look forward to every visit.
The food was delicious as always. The service was lacking. There was a large party that our server was working too. We waited too long to order drinks then it took too long for our wine bottle to arrive. No refills on water and had to ask twice for bread. We had a reservation as well so thought they could have planned better.
Enjoyed the wait staff, food, and atmosphere. It was a very relaxing experience which set the tone for an evening at the theater. We traveled from Virginia Beach and will continue to include this establishment as part of our itinerary for diner and theater. This place exceeded our expectations.
This is a restaurant at which owners and staff know their clientele and make us feel
welcome and cared for. Our dining preferences are known and often anticipated.
Food is reliably and predictably good using local ingredients, especially seafood.
It is good for quiet conversation most of the time and for visiting with friends.
The menu changes often enough that we don't find it boring to eat there
Our entrees were very delicious and the waitstaff were very attentive. It was little quiet when we arrived (a Friday at 6:00pm) but soon picked up and there wasn't an empty table in sight, except in the area that I believe can be reserved for private functions. Only disappointment was the calamari. It was too chewy, rubbery-like. The marinara served with it was wonderful though. Too bad we couldn't enjoy it on the calamari. We'll be back but won't order the calamari again.
The whole thing was wonderful. Food, people, place, all of it. Regulars were arriving every minute and hugs we're being passed out like old Friends. Loved it. Not shy on the wine either. Next time we go in we won't hugs too. I'm from Hawaii and hugs all around. Will definitely go back to this lovely place.
It was a terrific balance of fancy and casual. Prices and portions are very fair. The atmosphere feels very fancy yet the small setting feels comfortable. Whether you are dressed down and enjoying a meal by yourself or on a romantic date and dressed nicely, it feels right. The staff was extremely pleasant and gluten free options were not an issue. My girlfriend and I were very pleased with our experience.
We have been there before and the food was better and the service much better. Once the waitress FINALLY came to greet us (20 minutes after we were seated with menus) my husband had to ask what the specials were and fir bread fur the table. Both these things are usually givens at this restaurant. The ravioli alla vodka portion is smaller than it was when we started going there. On off putting experience at a restaurant we used to regard as reliable.
