Akira Japanese Hibachi Steakhouse Ratings and Reviews
Amazing restaurant. The chefs were very impressive and entertaining. The food portions were also exceptional as I was full before I could even finish. The staff was very personal and professional (even more so than any other restaurant of this caliber that I've been in). Gonna add this to our eating out rotation, and will definitely bring our kids next time. I know they would love it!
As far as teppanyaki restaurants go, I'd rate this is fair. It was just 'OK'. Sesame salad dressing was oddly flavorless and creamy and not at all what I expected (and not good). It's also weird to me that miso soup wasn't offered as a choice of soup. Spicy tuna roll wasn't bad, but also wasn't spicy and was so covered in sauce that there's no way to know whether it was tuna or not - I didn't expect good sushi in Indianapolis though.
The rest of the food was as expected - nothing spectacular and I suspect that had everything to do with the quality of the ingredients, which were fine, but not exceptional. The table chef was decent. Service was fine.
I wouldn't recommend this place per se, but I also wouldn't steer people away.
Do not go here for sushi. We waited 40 minutes after ordering for our 3 rolls and we were only the 3rd table in the place. The sushi that came out was not flavorful or fresh. The raw rolls were warmer than room temperature like they were sitting out a long time or were put on a very hot plate. Also, no-one of the spicy sauces were put on any of the rolls. When the waitress, who only came over once to the table, came back and we pointed it out she didn't seem concerned. I can't comment on the hibachi offerings, however the poor service will keep me from ever coming back to find out.
The food is cooked Hibachi style at the table in front of you by the chef, who also entertains as he cooks. Kids loved it as he kept them guessing what he would do next. Great value! Deliciously cooked fresh veggies and lean meat were in all of the entrees and cooked to order. Soup and salad also came with the lunch meal. You can also order off the sushi menu at lunch time as well.
I didn't get the rating overall 5 stars as we did have some issues with delays from our waitress- in bringing out alcoholic drinks, soup and salad timely and refills on drinks. I think this is the rarity though as we have been here before and had great food and great service! Definitely will be back!
We arrived 10 mins before our reservation. We had to wait for our Entire party before being seated, to find out the hibachi didn't hold enough chairs for our entire party so we grabbed an addtl table near by. No biggie. Our per server was the Only server As well as the hostess on a busy Saturday afternoon lunch time. We were the first table out of 5 tables seated, yet the last table to be served food or assigned a hibachi chef. We never got the attention of our server after he brought our salads so we never got drink refills until the end of our meal & only then Bc the hibachi chef felt bad for us. Towards 1pm the owner showed up. She attempted to seat people waiting but never offered any additional help to the server, bus boy, or her customers. After we finally flagged her down to pay, she was rude & seemed annoyed with how busy they were. She refused our groups $5 coupon, I'm sure that $5 was really going to make or break her on a $150+ meal. We also got an order to go which had to be paid separately. She refused to take a credit card for this order because it didn't meet her min. $5 spending requirement. We fished out some Change & cash to pay for that. She was overall unpleasant & although we had a great chef & meal, she left a sour taste on the experience. Pitiful.
i was not impressed with the saki, but the service and food was the best. our cook was the best and stayed engaged the time cooking for us. my youngest daughter was kind of in a bad mood and he made sure to focus on her and did a great job cheering her up and making us all laugh. we will be back for sure. I did not like the price of the sushi, the portions were small for the price and it was very expensive for me to take my family of seven, but it was great for the family to experience.
We went here as a last minute Valentine's Day dinner. We made reservations for 7pm but arrived about an hour earlier to see if they could accommodate us. We were only going for sushi and they were able to seat us right away. Our waitress was nice but not very attentive to us. She was not only handling our table but multiple hibachi tables and seating people which was too much to handle. By the time our sushi came out my husband had been out of a drink for at least 10 minutes and she never checked. We had to remind her again to get his drink. The sushi was warm and chewy so needless to say we didn't eat much of it. The price of the sushi was on the more expensive side too. We were not impressed with the service or the food so we will not be back. Hopefully the hibachi is better for the sake of the restaurant.
We had a reservation but were seated about 30 mins late. You could tell that they were busy and understaffed but once we had our order taken we quickly forgot about the wait. The chef was great and the food was delicious. The portions were decent and the price was too. I would take my family back.
My party of 6 dined on Christmas Day. Restaurant was very busy but we were seated within 10-15 minutes of our reservation time and our drink orders were taken immediately after seating. Food was delicious, service was great especially for it being so crowded.
The atmosphere was very quiet and pleasant with nice soft music. Our party was very pleased with the food and preparation of the food with the chef preparing it right in front of us...It was a Blast!!!! The price was very reasonable and was well worth the money, I would definitely recommend this restaurant to any all who like good food and a good atmosphere.
The service was terrible. There were only 3 other tables besides us. The waitress took our drink order and it took 20 min to get drinks.
It was extremely warm in the restaurant. We asked if the air conditioning could be cooler. We were told it was set on 70 but actual temp was 83.
Had an Open Table reservation at 6:15. Didn't get seated until 6:45 and order taken around 7:15. Totally blew up the birthday party plans for my daughter as friends had to leave because it took so long.
Also disappointed the restaurant didn't know we had an Open Table reservation. I'm not sure I'd use Open Table again at this restaurant or visit again.
Also, no bathroom service.
My new favorite local Japanese restaurant! This was my first visit, and I was a little leery after reading some of the other reviews. But most of the reported problems seem to occur during busy holidays, though, so I decided to give them a chance.
I was there with a group of eight on a Sunday afternoon. I have spent several months in Japan, and the first thing that struck me was the fairly authentic decor at Akira. Well done!
Service was prompt and accurate. Chopsticks were not visible, but were provided promptly upon request. Personally, I got steak and scallops. Steak was a little overdone -- I had requested medium rare -- but the scallops were absolutely PERFECT!!! This is the only time in 20 years of living here that I found someplace in Indiana that cooks scallops perfectly! And no bits of sand, either, of course.
The showmanship was a little lackluster, which was a disappointment for our grandson who came with us. But that's the least of my concerns.
I didn't see anyone on the staff that looked like they could speak Japanese with me. The closest was our chef, who was perhaps Vietnamese. So if you want to practice your Japanese language skills, this is not the place to go. But for excellent food and an authentic atmosphere, by all means, this is the place to go.
We made a reservation on New Year's Eve at this restaurant for 6pm,when we arrived 5 minutes early they told me it would be 15 or 20 mins, I figured that was fine it was New Year's Eve and all maybe they were a little behind. I went and checked at 630pm, they told again 15 or 20 mins, I asked why do they take reservations if they do not honor them and she told me they just had to accommodate a group of 20. She was rude and reminded me it was New Year's Eve and I explained I understood but that is why I made a reservation. In the end we left and won't return. The staff did not seem to care.
For the last 5 years, our family has enjoyed Christmas Eve dinner here after Church services. With 3 young grandchildren, the hibachi grill 'show' was always a favorite and perfect setting for the building excitement of Christmas. Unfortunately, this year was very disappointing. We were informed only after placing our order and having the waitress return from the kitchen that sushi was not being served that night. But more disappointing was that our chef acted as though he was angry at the world and did not interact with the children at all. That is really the main reason we were there.
