Ajanta Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The food is always excellent at Ajanta. But this time the service was lacking, in two regards. First, the server or the kitchen lost our order, so as we watched others being served, no food came to our table until we flagged down a server to say that we had been waiting and watching others who came after us being served food. Second, my companion's entrée was extremely spicy although he had asked for medium spicy; at the end of the meal our original server appeared to ask him if his "spicy" entrée had been okay. So first our order was lost, and then it was incorrectly recorded. We were not offered any compensation for the incorrect order. I was disappointed for the first time at this usually excellent restaurant.
We came in on Sunday at 6pm, and so did quite a few other customers. It took a long time to be seated and to order, and a nice waiter explained that Sundays at this time was always a terrible crush making service and kitchen super busy. The food was very good, but not exceptional. Oh well. I will give it another try some day and not give up.
1. Very poor ambience due to severely lacking ventilation (seafood preparation smell). It seemed like either the HVAC is intentionally underutilized or inadequately provisioned.
2. Poor cleanliness of cutlery.
3. Hastily executed dishes (even compared to a year ago when I last visited it, with favorable opinion at that point). Overcooked daal/lentils and veggies, undercooked mushrooms, incompletely roasted spices, missing ingredients.
4. Extremely unresponsive and forgetful young male waiter who listened to our requests for missing cutlery but just forgetfully just strolled around in a busy restaurant.
5. Public bickering amongst staff.
6. Unchecked (without auto-close spring) door that kept letting in cold air towards some of the outer tables.
I realize this restaurant is highly rated. What this review does is to convey to the superb staff that they really makes the meal complete. We took our six year old granddaughter with us. The staff and owners made her the star of the show. I can't wait to return
The food is delicious, the people very kind, fantastic customer care. In terms of price, it is not the cheapest Indian Restaurant, but it is high quality food, for a reasonable price. The food and experience are definitely worth more that you pay.
The environment is pleasant with Indian art all around the restaurant, and at least one statue of the Buddha, which like very much.
The staff are progression but not stuffy at all, and very attentive and accommodating.
Tables are set formally, but the atmosphere is light. Lighting is soft, yet sufficient and practical.
I have been going to Ajanta since 2002 for my first date with my ex-wife, and we went there in in 2016 when our divorce was final to honor the our relationship from begining to end.
We used to be a frequent customer of Ajanta. However, after the ownership change, we haven't been back too often. Tonight we tried eating there again. The food isn't as delicate tasting, service is less attentive, and dining room is not as clean as before. We will not be dining here as often as before. It's too bad the quality isn't the same or better under the new ownership.
I have been going to Ajanta with my family for over a decade, and every time I got it still impresses me. The food is a serious cut above every other Indian restaurant I have been to, including SF's new darling August One 5. This time I brought my girlfriend, her family, and my family together for dinner. We shared around 5 big plates and 3 small plates for the seven of us and it was just the right amount of food. It was also nice that it was quiet enough for my father and girlfriend's father to hear the conversation even though both have hearing aids.
What makes this place special is the food. It's simply more refined and more interesting than can be found other Indian restaurants. If you haven't been, and you like Indian food, you are missing out.
As always, the food was great, especially the vegetarian tasting menu. Everything was spiced/seasoned perfectly. My husband s and always gets the chicken tikka masala, it's that good.
My only complaint is that the service can be amateur (reaching over diners to deliver food and pick up dishes when the server easily could have walked three steps and handled things properly). And it can be chilly as well. The host doesn't seem at all happy to see us.
This restaurant has been an outstanding neighborhood place to go for excellent and out of the ordinary Indian cooking. The quality of the food is consistently high, prices are very reasonable, and service is warm and knowledgeable. Vegetarian options are given the same care as meat, and some dishes can be made vegan. We bring friends here when they are in Berkeley. Spice levels are determined individually, so we've never had anybody disappointed. Things get crowded at night; it is a good idea to make a reservation.
We have been going to Ajanta since it opened. The food quality is always high, and the service is excellent. Although Lachu Moorjani is no longer the owner, he is still contributing to the menus he has assembled for many years. Given the quality of the food (mostly organic), the prices at Ajanta are quite reasonable, and the decor very pleasant, except for the pink curtains at the front, a recent addition.
The food quality was average, nothing special. Here are more descriptors. Nan, was a bit oily, the panner nan, was tasteless, no flavor. Aloo Thiki had just the right spice and flavor. Lamb was okay tated like the spices came from a packet, in stead of a chef mixing individual spices. The Chicken Mulligatawney, was a bit too "runny" the water separated from the sauce and rice. I was afraid to touch the menus, they were old, had old food stains, and food old particles. Overall go only if you have to.
As usual, Ajanta was great. The only reason why I'm writing a review is because there was a sticker from a piece of produce in one of our dishes. It was sticker off of an eggplant, which is odd because our dish didn't have eggplant in it. It didn't necessarily bother us, but it was a little weird.
Ajanta is my favorite Indian restaurant and I've been coming here for years. This visit rates fundamentally as 4-star whereas any other time was absolutely 5-star. We unfortunately ordered two spinach sauce based dishes and the sauce was not particularly flavorful. The Saag Paneer especially was bland. The mushroom dish was much tastier. Our waiter did point out we must love spinach to both order the same (we should have taken the hint and changed one dish) and if the quality of the spinach sauce was higher it would have been fine. I have had so many amazing dishes there, this was a disappointment. We had a reservation as it was my friend's birthday, and despite buying two full meals and four glasses of wine and a dessert, we felt rushed out, and the restaurant was not full. However, despite this less than perfect feedback, I wholeheartedly recommend Ajanta. It is unlike any other Indian restaurant, and the seasonal asparagus with sauce appetizer is always amazing.
