About Aixois French Restaurant & Coffee Bar
French native Emmanuel Langalde and his wife Megan opened French bistro Aixois back in 2001. Aixois is conveniently located in the Crestwood Shops on the Trolley Trail. Noted for having the best outdoor patio in Kansas City, the atmosphere is just one of the things that keep people returning time-and-time again. The food is divine and the service is impeccable.
Chef Emmanuel uses all organic, fresh, seasonal ingredients and locally sourced products to create his French recipes. Dine at Aixois for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Sunday night was a quiet night, not packed, so noise level was low. The food was all excellent. Service was super, but as noted, not overly crowded. The staff was all friendly attentive, & knowledgeable, so I suspect service is always good. Ingredients were all fresh and high quality. Preparation perfect, mussels cooked just right.
Definite return to this site.
I arrived at 1:00 on a Sunday. The restaurant was lively and very noisy. The waitress was friendly and helpful, but the food was a disappointment. The scrambled eggs were good, but unremarkable, the sliver of ham was dry and overcooked, and the toast was not crisp. Definitely not worth the price, in my mind.
We went on a Saturday night during Restaurant Week so the restaurant was packed. Both the staff and the kitchen did an excellent job of managing the crowds, although it did take a little while to get our entrees. I would say the food was good quality and well prepared. It was not the dazzling, knock-your-socks-off food that some French restaurants in larger cities are capable of. But overall, the entire meal was very enjoyable. We especially loved the onion soup and the profiteroles.
We ate dinner here (early) during restaurant week- it was packed, and that was likely why. The food was delicious- I had the chicken Paillard with mashed potatoes, the french onion soup (SO good) and a pastry/ice cream desert (I can't remember the name). I also had a great cocktail- the "Crestwood"- so yummy. My husband was still talking about his dessert five days later. A little pricey normally, but very good and a nice place.
We tried this restaurant during Restaurant Week and ordered from that menu. I had the ruby trout, which was very good, and my companion had the chicken palliard dish, which he liked. I had the profiteroles for dessert and they were good. There were some really good wines by the glass and the prices were reasonable. Parking is a little bit of a challenge, but we were prepared for that. The interior of the restaurant was cozy but not remarkable. Service was perfunctorily professional, while managing to carry a subtle undertone of condescension. All in all, we were glad we tried it, but not glad enough to go back.
I was a little put off first because you had a choose 2 of the 3 courses for restaurant week. I usually skip the places that do this, but didnt see the fine print. Really? Anyway, your food is delicious which will make me return; especially the shrimp salad with the citrus in it! Also enjoyed the pate plate. Prob will skip next year for restaurant week though sorry.
A completely awful experience. Overpriced ordinary food, not in any way French, let alone from Provence, served poorly in a noisy overcrowded space by amateurs. I don't know how they remain in business. No charm, no ambience, no gastronomy, absolutely no service and ridiculously overpriced. In short, a disgrace.
Went for restaurant week and they were out of two of their offerings. Tried the lamb and it was just ok there wasn't much protein on the plate more of the mash and Brussel sprouts. My sister did get the trout and it was fabulous. I would recommend that. The dessert with the chocolate ganache and ice cream was very good too. The big problem I had was the restaurant was so cold I had to keep my coat on. Service was good. My water was refilled practically anytime I took a drink
I went during restaurant week and wasn't crazy about our meal/service. We felt rushed while we were dinning, my main course came out before I was finished with my salad. We had to ask for more bread and hunt down our waiter anytime we needed something. I ordered the ONGLET GRILLEE AU POIVRE (steak and fries) and the fries were nothing special. They tasted like frozen fries that hadn't been seasoned. Dessert was by far the highlight of the meal.
I would return to Aixois for dessert only.
I was surprised our waiter was working at this restaurant because he couldn't give us any recommendations on anything. Every time we asked about a dish or drink, he said he didn't like it "but it's popular". If you don't like French food, don't work at a French restaurant.
The atmosphere was loud and more like a cafe than a romantic restaurant.
For the price, the food was OK, not amazing. We enjoyed our meal but we wouldn't go back. I will say that the French onion soup was great, if you have a craving.
I went here for the first time during restaurant week. There's no closer parking to the restaurant so you'll have to park near the shops on the side. The service was amazing but the food was mediocre. I've had better French cuisine elsewhere in Kansas City. The ruby trout with rice was decent but not the kind of French flair you would expect. My partner had the steak with fries and although the steak was delicious as medium rare (melts in your mouth), the fries could have been better. Presentation of the food wasn't very fancy either. The creme brûlée was a disappointment. I've had better elsewhere. The wine selection is really good. I would try this place again on a less busier night.
Food was really good, service was terrible. Granted, it was busy for Restaurant Week, but our server walked by our empty drinks no less than 6 times. It took about an hour and a half for lunch, and the majority of that time our server was wandering around in plain view, not helping other tables.
Husband & I decided to try this for lunch during Restaurant Week and maybe that wasn't a good time. I don't think they were staffed to handle the crowd but since I've never been there before, maybe that's typical? Overall, it wasn't a disaster but we waited 15 minutes before even being acknowledged and then a server in passing who asked if anyone had helped us yet. We said no, so she took our drink orders and then eventually our lunch order. Almost at the end of our meal, another server stopped by to apologize that we were her table but she'd been tied up at the other end of the restaurant serving breakfast. We weren't really sure what the point was, since we never saw her again. However, we did appreciate that the other server stepped in to wait on us. Food was slow to arrive but at least it was hot and delicious. We tried the Corn Crab Chowder, Croque Monsieur, Quiche Lorraine, and a Floating Island dessert - everything was wonderful!. By the time we left, we'd been there nearly two hours which is too long for lunch. But, we do want to go back (after Restaurant Week) and try it again for dinner.
I had reservations but we were not seated in the main dining room. Since our waitress was working between the two dining areas, our serve was poor. we had to ask for bread, ask for butter, ask for drinks. One in our party was ordering from the restaurant week menu so the waitress indicated she needed to take the full order for that person.The others in our party ordered from the other menus and ordered appetizers and salad. She then came back later and said she needed to get the entree order. That was placed. The sad and the appetizers were brought at the same time. The dessert was brought to the person who ordered from the restaurant menu but the waitress never took the order for the dessert for the other people. We needed to call her to get this order places and then the special creme brûlée was gone. (this was just after eight when this order was places.) Food was okay - not spectacular. I wouldn't recommend.
This was my first time at Aixois. The server was not knowledgeable. We made a 5:00pm reservation because we had a 7:30pm show to make. We ended up cancelling our dessert order because everything was taking so long.
The people next to us had much better service. I saw their server about 5 times per 1 time we saw ours, we usually had to flag her down.
However, the food was delicious. We both had a version of Moules Frittes, one with the Roquefort cream and one with the Saffron. I really wish I'd had the opportunity to try a dessert. They sounded wonderful.
My friend and I booked for lunch last Friday. Even though it was crowded, we were seated and served in good time. My friend had the quiche w/ salad and chocolate crepe. I had the beet salad and creme brulee. All of it was delicious. I have another friend who wants to eat at Aixois, so I'll be back.
With so much great dining in KC, we don't make Aixois nearly enough. The squash and beet special was the best salad I've had anywhere in ages. My dover sole special was cooked perfectly, though the capers were too much for this delicate fish (and were put aside). I switched mains halfway with my wife who ordered the monk fish special and liked mine better. I enjoyed both mains, though Aixois never seems to put much effort into dish accompaniments. Our shared chocolate dessert was delightful. The service was as good as it gets. We were just back from a foodie crawl in NOLA (Herbsaint, Commanders, Shaya) and Aixois holds its own with the best.
Experience was interrupted by people next to us taking selfies of each other. I know this cannot be helped in our contemporary world, but places can refuse to serve guests for being disruptive to other guests. This behavior does take away from the ambiance of the restaurant.
My wife and I were excited to find Aixois so close (1 mile) to Country Club Plaza. My wife and I are fans of Brasserie food, and if you are too, you will not be disappointed here. We liked lunch so much, we went back the second day for our last meal in KC before returning home.
I am not sure how I have lived in Kansas City my whole life and never been here. We have now been twice in 2 weeks and cannot wait to go back! The cocktails are well crafted, the service is sincere, the food is incredible. We got a chance to try a souffle for dessert and it was spectacular.
We had a table for 8 pm, but were able to be seated early. The restaurant was 90% full and noisy. The cheese plate appetizer was on the small side. Good thing we ordered a salad which we split at the table. The duck entree was good, though not crispy. The salmon with grilled asparagus was good, but not exceptional. The pineapple upside down cake was very much like cardboard. The wine was good, though the list on the menu was limited. (A secret list must be behind the bar).
That about says it all--we had a terrific meal, excellent service, a very nice reasonably priced bottle of wine and a memorable evening. We just had to shout at each other to be understood. Granted, it was a very busy Friday evening, so I really have no room to complain, just think twice if you plan on conversation.
