Met three friends there for dinner and drinks. We ordered drinks, waited 25 minutes, then walked up to the bar and asked the nice guy behind the bar where our drinks were. He apologized and immediately made our drinks and brought them to us. The fish tacos were very good, as was the calamari. Given the food is not cheap, the quality was high so made it worth it. But the service was terrible. We then ordered two more rounds of drinks from the barman, as our server had vanished. The barman was great and personally delivered our drinks. We were low key, undemanding customers who expected fair service. Cocktails were lovely and the atmosphere good. Would we go back? Unlikely -- Castro st has a lot of restaurants with great service.
The service was great. Wait staff knew how to ensure your meal was memorable. If only the food lived up to the service. Don't get me wrong the food was good, just not spectacular. Which meant the food cost seemed high for what you got. They should reduce the food quantities, and raise the quality.
High end Mexican food. Lots of seafood options. I was most impressed by their courteous and rapid service.
the service was OK, the drinks are great but the food was mediocre. I will go back to try some other stuff and most likely at dinner...stay tuned :-)
It was a very quiet Monday night for Agave and the servers were very friendly and helpful. They gave (good!) advice and opinions when required but were otherwise unobtrusive. The food was above average; in particular the calamari appetizer was excellent.
I went to this place twice last week. First trip was for a business lunch, which gave a great impresssion in regards to the service and food.
Which led me to make a reservations for my son's 13th birthday party. I had a total of 11 people for the party. The food was good, no doubt, but you think for 13th birthday party, they would at least provide a small cake or dessert to acknowledge the birthday celebration. My son was really disappointed. I hinted to the server 3 seperate times....and wanted to charge me for a small desert...after spending over $400 dollars that evening.
I wouldn't go back there for a special occasion, but maybe for a business lunch.
This was the first time for the two of us and we had invited two other couples. The guacamole is prepared ahead of time. Most good restaurants have their guacamole made as you order. The food is tasty but would not go back as the service is slow and the chef is not accomodative.
I dined with a group and we sat in comfy couch seating in the back outdoor patio. We loved the firepits on the tables. The food was excellent and we had a great time.
I've been going to Fiesta del Mar for ages, and have always enjoyed it. Fiesta del Mar has great food, great service, and great drinks. I hoped for a more upscale version of that at Agave, Fiesta del Mar's sister restaurant, and didn't get it. The food wasn't very good (the chicken was dry, the chorizo flavorless), the service was weird, and the drinks were inexpertly made. I'll stick with Fiesta del Mar.
Went with a small group for a mid week meal. All our dishes were pleasant.
Very good food -- lives up to its tagline about being where Mexican meets CA cuisine -- regular meal-like servings (meat, sauce, vegetables, starch) with a mexican flavor. Far from Tex-Mex. Dining room is cheery and service was excellent the night we were there.
The brunch at Agave was terrific. They had a buffet that included traditional breakfast food (e.g. scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage) as well as some Mexican dishes (e.g. Cochinita Pibil, Pollo Asado, Carne Asada and Chiliquiles). There were also trays of black beans and rice. All superbly seasoned. Unfortunately, they offer the buffet brunch fo special occasions though they do serve items from the menu.
the food and service was amazing. brought my mom for mothers day brunch and she absolutely loved it. great outdoor patio with plenty of sunlight or they have multiple umbrellas to keep you in the shade. simple menu and very attentive staff. would mos def come back.
We really liked the decor. Everything was clean, earth toned, and fit the mood. We'll come back.
...with my daughter-in-law, she chose the venue for her birthday lunch. It was wonderful choice.
The beef churrasco was fantastic! My husband said the mole was superb. We all particularly enjoyed the coconut ice cream for dessert.
Not sure what happened, as we are big fans of the other restaurants in this group (La Fiesta, Fiesta del Mar Too, etc.) but we did not have a positive experience dining here. Extremely slow service, mediocre (at best) food. To be fair, when one of our group didn't touch much of her dinner, they took it off the bill. But overall I hope it is just startup issues because I will avoid the place for now. We will continue to dine at the associated restaurants.
Nice place to lunch and good bar - a little above average for lunch. Came here for dinner - it was ok; a little pricey for what was offered. Will recommend for lunch
Food was just ok. I expected more since I had heard it had great food but not so. Of the four of use that went, two of us were just ok and the others said they liked theirs but not big deal. I thought it would be slightly a notch above but not so for my dish. I like La Fiesta better.
Great new spot on Castro, fabulous tequila selection
Good food, good margaritas. , friendly waiters. Agave should get rid of the TVs - detracts from the ambience.
Went for Valentine's day - very enjoyable
Consistently good! We have been several times. The camarones a la diabla is my favorite! Shrimp cocktail was good and a very generous portion.
Place was practically empty at 630pm on Saturday evening. Owner was very nice as well as attentive server. We ordered the steak special which was bland, fatty, cold and undercooked. Enchiladas were ok but not warm enough. Would give it a B-/C+
Most dishes are a little pricer than similar restaurant but the carne asada is good.
I really really wanted to love this place ... we went on a sunny Sunday afternoon in February. We were in between lunch and dinner, and the service was poor. Our waiter was nice, but nothing really ever got delivered properly. The food was ok.
Margaritas were great, but I'm not even sure I would go back just for a margarita. It was "fine" but really expensive for what it was. I hate not loving it!
Went there for lunch. Place was empty at noon but they've only been open for about 6 months. Had the Veracruz Fish which was good, red snapper with peppers and a hint of sweet. Tasty. Margaritas were good too. I think they missed with the interior design though. Feels a little cheap while the menu is more upscale Mexican food.
i love this place, is fairly new but that food was grate and the staff were very friendly. we were celebrating my wife`s birthday and she was very happy. i recomend agave restaurant.
Empty on a Friday night (never a good sign). I immediately noticed the 4 or 5 tvs in the small main dining room, which were playing soccer. I don't mind bars or grills that play sports games, but a restaurant with $24 entrees shouldn't have quite so many tvs. If they sold $6 taquitos, well, sure, but not $24 shrimp! Anyhow, my husband ordered a taco combination, which was delicious, and I ordered the cremoso chicken enchiladas, which weren't bad, but were quite unusual (and the sauce looked like peanut butter). The rice was ok, but the beans were a bowl of brown water with perhaps four beans. Guacamole was delicious. Just kind of an odd experience.
Imaginative specials if you venture off menu. Recommended. We had a seafood lasagna (wait, thought that was Italian? But it was definitely Mexican) that was amazing.
Margaritas were great and food was good. Wanted better chips and more salsa though. Service was lousy as it took about 15 minutes to even get our drink order in.
We ate appetizers only and those were tasty. Easy to find a get to (parked in the multi-level lot behind the restaurant. Service was extraordinary.
Nice presentation, just ok taste - many dishes tend to be a tad too sweet.
Good food; ambiance nil. Not a place to take someone on a romantic date.
Not impressed with ambience or food . A big disappointment! We enjoy their other restaurants and this doesn't compare. We won't return. Nice employees who were very attentive!
It was our first time there. Our server Kevin went above and beyond. We were celebrating a birthday with a larger group and he was so attentive from beginning to end: welcoming all the guests, explaining the menu and serving us with a smile. A real discovery were the "quesadillas jamaica" hibiscus flower filled quesadillas with a delicious avocado dip! Yummy:)
I've been going to Fiesta del Mar literally since the day their original Shoreline location opened 20 years ago. I have always appreciated it as a great family place, and go there every chance I get. When I heard that the owners would be opening a bit higher-end place in downtown Mtn View, I was thrilled-- they are great restaurateurs, and Castro Street is still a few first-cabin restaurants away from being a really great spot. Our first trip to Agave last night was a real treat, and I'm looking forward to many, many more dinners there.
We got to Agave a bit early for our reservation, and were seated promptly by the very good hostess. I was impressed by the interiors (though I don't think the wide-screens showing college football qui
Very authentic Mexican food with excellent flavor
Food was very flavorful. My main complaint is with
Their timing. We felt rushed, they brought the main course
Minutes after our appetizer was served. Then picked
Up the check before the other couple had time to
Put their credit card down. The place had many free tables
So they weren't worried about turnover. Our waitress was nice
They just need to slow down. Will try them again.
We've been fans of Fiesta for years and tried Agave for a birthday celebration. It's a very different feel -- larger space, big-screen TV's, bar seating. We had the asparagus appetizer, the chile relleno, and the halibut special, all of which were excellent. The pickled veggies to start were good, although I prefer the more traditional chips and salsa. Margaritas were good, too, although we had a hard time tracking down our waitress to order seconds. As a vegetarian, I wish there were a few more entree choices on the menu.
