Against the Grain Urban Tavern Leaside provides a unique social experience with creative dishes that you could only imagine at a restaurant called Against the Grain. The menu offers food that youd find at a traditional tavern, but remade with a bold twist. Try southern fried tater tots, smashed avocado on toast, wild boar brick oven pizza or the signature Tavern burger. The Nasi Goreng and Chicken Coq au Vin pot pie are a couple of the restaurants most popular dishes.
Against the Grain wouldnt be an urban tavern without an offering of drinks thats as exciting as its food. Choose from 18 different seasonal and craft beers on tap as well as a selection of bottled beer. The full bar also offers house made sangria and a variety of wine and spirits.
This is a basic restaurant….nothing spectacular but solid food and great selection. It's a vibrant place and our service was amazingly attentive but not annoying.
We've been to ATG a half dozen or so times, and each time my wife and I have sworn it would be the last. They never seem to know what kind of resto they are, and the food and ambiance has proven that. This visit was different, one I would recommend (and have) to other friends and family. The four of us raved about our foods and the service etc., was pretty good. Pretty sure that is my 7th visit and likely the 4th or 5th menus I have seen from them in the year they've been open, but it's a keeper this time, well done folks!
kinda noisy with the music, and tiny food portions, but the waiter was amazingly kind and helpful, and gave us a bit of Nan bread to fill us up after the main courses were so small. Beautiful place though!
I found this place looking at places for winterlicious and was attracted by their description of their food as "beer cuisine". The menu highlighted this description and my friends and I enjoyed our meals very much. The staff were diligent and friendly and handled minor hiccups with practiced grace.
I arrived at the restaurant right on time and they have a table available for me right away. They gave me the same table that I was seating last time. The waiter almost came immediately after we took off some clothing and settled down comfortably. My wife and I opted for Winterlicious menu even though we would eagerly try other items on the menu. I ordered pork chop while my wife had white bass. The appetizer came very fast and before we started diving on it, the main course came! The kitchen seems not to be coordinating very well. All dishes came very hot. The portion was smaller than I expected especially for my wife's white bass. The dishware was big with a pool of chicken broth at the bottom, few potatoes and a small filet on top. It looks like an appetizer rather than main course. My pork chop is done perfectly and the portion is ok. I ended up giving some of my dish to my wife to keep her happy. I finished my dish but my beer did not even arrive. My waiter came to check how we did and I told him where my beer is. He apologized but I did not feel like drinking a beer after my main course. So I canceled the drink. The dessert was delicious but why serving a cold dessert with a hot plate? Go figure.
Overall, the food is good but the portion is smaller than our preference. The service is so-so and have lots of rooms of improvement as other reviewers have highlighted.
Enjoyed the ambiance and the service was excellent. The food was wonderfully cooked and extremely flavorful.
We had a nice time; visited for the first time with out of town friends. Winterlicious menu was good. Excited to return for drinks and brunch. Great beer selection.
I love Against the Grain on the waterfront. It is really one of my favorite places in Toronto; an upscale pub. The Leaside location does not disappoint. Beautiful space, but suitably quiet that I could chat with a business associate and we could actually hear ourselves. The food is good; we ordered burgers and our waiter was kind enough to make mine half salad and half fries; a great touch. The one thing I do not like is the sort of team service. We really had no idea who our waiter was, as it seemed like there was a different person for everything. Small quibble, over an otherwise good lunch. Of course, I will be back here and downtown.
They did not find my open table reservation and that was embarrassing and potentially a catastrophe-49
we visit the restaurant quite often for lunch. It is reliably good food, kid-friendly which still being hip-ish (and there is parking in leaside!!). I particularly enjoy the beet salad, and my husband the flatbreads. The service is hit-or-miss; there is one mature male waiter who is usually there at lunch who is good, but when he's not our server we usually find ourselves having to "flag someone down" (even when its not busy) - but to be fair, poor service seems to be par for the course in the industry these days.
Excellent dinner & entertainment! What super night from beginning to end. My group greatly appreciated the meal & staff. Thank you!
Great food, mucsic, staff and drinks. Can't wait to go back and have some FUN!
Only our second time here but it didn't let down. Food was good, great beer selection and awesome service. Huge space, we will be back in the warmer months to take advantage of the 2 huge patios.
There are not enough dessert. They got rid of a very good cheesecake they had and now have no cheesecake. The burger is really good but not enough entrees that I would like . They don't have prime rib.
Love my Neighbour Tavern!
We try to get there at least once a week but I need to order something other thatn the Chop and Pop salad BUT it is soooo good.
I have been here before, and enjoyed the time. This time, it was crowded, and the music was so loud, it was hard to hear. I asked if the music could be turned down, and was told it was set, but the waiter would ask the manager, and then he winked at me, which I thought was inappropriate. There was no change. The website menu was not accurate compared to what was actually on the menu in the restaurant. My order wasn't accurate -- I asked for rib eye steak, and got a strip loin instead, I ordered raspberry bread pudding, and got chocolate bread pudding. I didn't send either back, because it was close, but not what I had actually ordered. It was a disappointing night, with a dear friend who is leaving to live in another part of the world permanently, and I wish we had gone somewhere where we could have actually talked and enjoyed the time together.
great lunch for mty husband's birthday on December 13th food great waitress fantastic
Meet an old friend and really enjoyed the conversation and the service, THis is my neighbourhood Pub.
Food was very average ( cheese board- charcuterie, kale salad- don't try) and service was perfunctory effort. Will not go again.
Decided to try out this restaurant after driving by it a number of times. I loved the ambiance,
the service and the menu included something for everyone. I've already recommended this restaurant to friends who live in the area.
As always, the service and ambiance at ATG is great however the meal we had on most recent visit was sub-standard. They have changed the menu, added a few new items and dropped off a couple favorites. This visit we both had the fancy hamburger, the one with the duck egg (minus the duck egg) that turned out to be very dry and over cooked. The onion bun was stale and the french fries were way too salty...almost like a salt-lick.
This is still a great neighbourhood restaurant but one has to keep an eye on what they order and make specific requests.
Food was good although the salad wasn't the freshest.
The mimosas were excellent, the food was good but the options limited. I don't have kids but I noticed there were a lot of families there.
Great venue but the menu is poor. Food is no better than a Jack Astor's or Lone Star. I've been there several times always hoping to taste something good, to entice me back again but so far nothing. Would like to see them raise their quality on the food side. I'm not picky but right now I have no interest in coming back. I will say that as compared to their first couple months after opening, service is better, it had been terrible in my experiences.
Nothing special about the food, drinks, ambience, etc. Food was bland. I had higher expectations perhaps. Won't return. Our server was excellent though.
We love going to this restaurant because of the ambiance and the fact that it is in the neighbourhood. I think that the name of the restaurant "Against The Grain" is excellent as the menu is "against the grain". It's a hodgepodge of dishes and I never feel like there is a great selection. For my 11-year old, the two things he will have is a burger or the fish & chips. There really isn't much more for him to choose from. I know we would come here for often if the selection was better.
I live in the area. Thus was my first visit. Food good. Great ambiance. Downside was waiter not very friendly. Felt rushed, in fact he brought our bill before he had offered dessert, which we all wanted and seemed frustrated when someone took too long to order. He was just very business like, short answers to our questions.
Our daughter organized a Saturday birthday brunch for my husband that also included 4 out of town friends. Everyone was pleased with the food. I had Fred's French raisin toast which was scrumptious and beautifully presented (you need a healthy appetite for this one!). It was served with bananas and just the right amount of syrup which permeated the chunky bread slices. The only sour note was that one of our guests' orders was forgotten and her burger arrived after most of us had finished so she ended up eating some of her partner's food while she waited. The server was apologetic but no compensation was offered to my knowledge. I also enjoyed the goulash soup for dinner earlier the same week.
Good spot for craft beer, and the staff is very knowledgable about what's on tap.
I haven't been back to ATG in the last few months. Their menu has changed significantly. Thanks to Paul, I was able to enjoy one of their off-the-menu items - "Shmack N' Cheese." This was a mac n cheese with a homemade pretzel. Wow. I never thought these two would go so well together. I also had the wild mushroom flatbread. Paul recommended to add some of their beer-braised beef and boy was it a good addition. It turned a vegetarian flatbread into something even more amazing! The only negative (minor) was that our water wasn't refilled once. That's ok! Next time :)
Our meal was delicious and our service prompt. It is a noisy location and not conducive to quiet conversation. We had a fantastic server who was patient, charming, knowledgeable and courteous. She greatly enhanced our experience with her professionalism.
Sent the fish tacos back, the tortillas was very wet and couldn't pick them up to eat. The floor manager attended to my needs. I asked to grill the tortillas a bit more and voila - perfection.
I have been to Against the Grain - Leaside multiple times and I feel like their service has gotten worst and worst. Both recent occasion, it took so long for the server to knowledge us and provide water.
This time when we went, we were on the patio and had to switch tables due to the heat and not being in the shade. After moving, we went sure if we had the same server since she did not come back for some time. I had ask another male server for assistance, who was working the area right next to us, and he was really rude. I did not appreciate his attitude - just because he's not our server and would not be getting out tip - I think all staff should be polite. Our server was very nice to us. But overall, not a good atmosphere.
Not the greatest, took 45 minutes for our food to come out.. If I didn't have the company of great friends I would've been extremely upset about the long wait time for out food. Had chop and pop salad and my popcorn was stale... My friend had chicken Caesar salad and her chicken was dry.. Another one had steak and asked for med rare.. Got well done.. So it wasn't very great.
We were a group of 10 co-workers out for a celebratory lunch. We were seated on the patio and the opinion all round was favourable. The food was good and came out all at the same time. Service was perfect, attentative without being overbearing. Highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the neighbourhood.
Excellent atmosphere and ambience, great for relaxation as well.
The service was warm and friendly and the staff was extremely knowledgeable about their vast selection of wine and craft beers.
One man band Friday night for your entertainment as well.
The fruit flies were everywhere it was disgusting, they were in our drinks, they were buzzing around through the whole meal making it uncomfortable finally called the manager he deducted two beers and gave us 1 dessert and coffee.the coffee tasted like water.
Won't go back!
Please spend your money and time somewhere else. The burger taste like dog food. Oue server totally ignored us.
Everything was good except the main course took too long to come to the table and there were too many flys
Great location and ambience. Outdoor patio very inviting and well set up. Look forward to coming back.
