Afternoon Tea - The Phoenician Ratings and Reviews
Was it terrible? No. Was it what I expect from a five star hotel? No.
The refreshed lobby looks great and the holiday decor is very nice. The valet was excellent. Once inside we were greeted promptly and seated. The table setting looked lovey. The pianist was excellent.
One of the servers took our tea order and as soon as she left the table, another server presented us with the sandwiches. This seemed premature as we did not even have the tea at our table—and it takes 5 minutes to steep. So this felt very rushed. We selected our sandwiches and sat with them until our tea arrived and steeped—probably close to 10 minutes. So staff training needs to be improved.
We were seated against the wall and more than once, kitchen staff wearing their rubber gloves, passed in front of us with plastic bins for dishes or other back of the house stuff. It would be nice if there was another route for them to use.
The tea was very nice; we drink good tea at home. I got the darjeeling and my husband got the english breakfast. The sandwiches were okay; I took one of each, but not one of them was truly excellent or interesting. In my opinion the salmon was the best.
The scones were good as well as the cream, jam, and the lemon curd. I had a few bites of each one with the various toppings.
The sweets were rather disappointing. Admittedly at this point I was only able to sample a few. The chocolate dipped strawberry—I cut it in half because I could not eat the whole thing and I noticed that the strawberry was starting to spoil on the edge and this would not otherwise be visible with the chocolate on top. The other items were really nothing special. I took a bite of those on my plate, but did not feel tempted to finish any of them.
Overall, my impression is that the tea has large scale banquet catering feel—not the feel of a premium tea that I have experienced in other places. But the pricing is for a high-end afternoon tea experience, especially with a built in 22% gratuity.
Every time I come into town to enjoy the weather and views in Arizona, a highlight of my trip is to visit Natalie and Wanda for their lovely afternoon tea. The food is delicious, the ambiance is lovely, and the ladies always greet us warmly and remember our favorites. We love the new tearoom and the view. See you again in February!!
My daughter and I were on a Dad / daughter date. This was perfect - everything from the seating to the sandwiches to the desert was delicious. It is expensive at $75 per person, but you are not rushed, can eat as much as you would like and get the views and atmosphere of the Phoenician.
We have been attending the afternoon tea since its inception. Since this year's renovation and the new pricing, I am concerned the hotel is overpricing the afternoon tea which will lead to its end. I have taken my children here since they could walk, and there is no reason for such price increases. This is a confidential review.
As usual, service, food, and ambiance were impeccable- Wanda is the absolute greatest- generally loving the new aesthetics of the place, however- one glaring omission is the beautiful grande piano that graced the lobby, bar, and tea room for years, and added so much charm, elegance, and warmth to the space. It was frankly not only disappointing, but from one musician to another, devastating and insulting to see a musician’s fine instrument downgraded from a grande piano to a lacklustre, pedestrian, electronic keyboard. Alan’s talents befit the Steinway he used to play, and he deserves this instrument through which to display his craft. As do we, longstanding, local clientele (for decades!) who love, appreciate, and expect this level of musical expression and experience. No one needs to see the cords- the grande or even baby grande piano were designed for amplification in their natural design. The new space has more than enough room next to the bar to accommodate Alan’s piano. Bring it back!
Everything was wonderful, especially the staff and their impeccable level of service. However, I did find it problematic to receive a bill for $127.99 for Tea for two when the actual cost was $49.00/person. With that said, an automatic service charge of 22% was tacked on to the bill, as well as $8.43 for sales tax. Don't force me to pay 22%, let me pay the amount for top that I want to pay.
Food and service were great as always. The new decor is lovely, however the first table we were seated at was too high and too wide. We felt like we were too far apart to converse. We ended up not sitting in the actual tea room, which is very noisy, instead we sat out by the keyboard player. Changing seats made the experience perfect as we had a smaller table and could actually hear each other talk.
The tea was situated in the Golf Clubhouse, albeit a temporary home while the main hotel area is being refurbished, not the best venue for high tea. The servers were OK, as was the food.
Overall not a very elegant or distinguished High Tea. The Biltmore High Tea experience is much better.
Our server was Wanda. She has served us in the past and we always ask for her. She is always happy and friendly. She is very attentive and makes sure we are taken care of the entire time.
We come here a couple of times a year for specifically afternoon tea time. Wish we could go more!
A quiet, special afternoon tea experience with beautifully crafted finger sandwiches and desserts! Lovely view of the golf course. The service was unobtrusive, and she made sure our water glasses were filled as well as offering seconds on the sandwiches and desserts. A very pleasant, special afternoon tea. Made us feel special!
I have been going to tea at the Phoenician for the past ten years and I have had favorable and excellent service by two of their servers . They are going through remodeling at the hotel right now. There was no valet parking and we had to walk in the sun in to get to the restaurant. The service on this
day was very poor and even though I had made my reservation two months in advance, the sitting was undesirable and when I talked to the manager at the beginning all she could say was "I am sorry", yet did not offer any solutions. The bill we received included 22% tip built into it which is above 20% that I pay for excellent service and on this day outside of parking and accommodation the service was also really poor.
Everytime I come into town from the Chicago area, my best friend and I have tea at the Phoenicien. The food is delicious, love Natalie as always, and always have a lovely, relaxing time. Hope to see both Natalie and Wanda again soon. Love, love, love the new venue. Hope you do not move it back to the busyness of the Lobby. This location is so much better.
Had a lovely afternoon tea at the Phoenician. I've heard about Wanda and was lucky to have her as my server. She is attentive, friendly and appreciates you coming there. All the courses were delicious: sandwiches, scones and desserts. Great selection of teas. Wanda will generously offer seconds for each course, so come hungry! I usually don't like scones, but these were the best I've ever had: tender, flaky and fresh from the oven. The scones combined with the cream, curd and preserves - perfection! Live pianist added a touch of elegance to the experience. Highly recommended for a special occasion or a fun afternoon.
Afternoon tea here is great, but I am sure it is even better when it is in the actual tea room. Currently it is in another location because of construction. However, the presentation itself was lovely, they come around with plates of tea sandwiches, scones, and desserts. This way, if you don't like something, then you aren't wasting the food or money not eating it. The tea is great too! The only thing I will caution is they tac on a 22% tip, regardless of how many are in your part.
We really enjoyed the new venue. Tea at the Golf Clubhouse has a really nice ambiance, without the distraction of the lobby traffic. Views on both sides and a fireplace! Perfect.
Service was excellent, Wanda was our server again and we just adore her. Tea selection is great, sandwiches and scones are wonderful with a nice selection. They might consider adding a seasonal sandwich as well for the regulars.
Another wonderful Tea presented by Natalie & Wanda at the Phoenician. We have enjoyed Tea at the Phoenician for the last 13 years, and plan to come back many times in the future. A really special experience . Lovely service, gracious hostesses and a beautiful venue.
