This was our second time at Khyber Pass, and it did not disappoint. We took a visiting work colleague here for dinner, and he loved it as well. Weeknight, so it wasn't busy, and our server was the delightful daughter of the owner. We had the combination appetizer - excellent; lamb curry, combination kabob plate with the delicious rice sprinkled with shredded carrots and raisins. Also ordered garlic naan. Had a Turkish coffee and baklava for dessert. This is exquisite food to our taste. Sometimes the service can be a tad slow, but it does not detract. Try this restaurant for an authentic adventure into Middle Eastern food!

This is a favorite place of ours and we are never disappointed, which includes our 4 kids who also love the food. From salmon curry, to chicken kabobs, and lamb in cherry sauce with cherry rice, you can't go wrong. The staff are very friendly and courteous.

The start of our meal was fantastic. Attentive service coupled with naan and mint cucumber yogurt. The five bean soup was to die for. Intense incredible spicy flavors. And then it was if all service and culinary attempts stopped. The sampler had 4 stews and 3 different rice dishes. A complete assortment that approached blah..... We asked for water and it came 30 minutes later along with our bill. A magnificent start and a fiasco finish

I would recommend this to anyone who loves Middle Eastern or Indian Food. The menu is varied, some unusual dishes. We loved the Bolani - a potato stuffed flat bread that is served with a nice spicy sauce. Borka, a roasted eggplant dish is tasty - like a courser baba ghanoush with yoghurt. Sambosa is a meat & lentil fried dumpling that was nice as well. My husband had the curried lamb & enjoyed it. Everyone who tasted my Yaghoot Chaloao - a sweet and sour cherry dish was blown away. The meats here were top quality and all the vegetarian dished were nicely spiced. It is a very classy little restaurant with nice service and really great food. We will definitely return soon.

Authentic Afghan cuisine! Highly recommend Khyber Pass, the staff and friendly and tentative to your needs. The food is excellent and very delicious. For appetizer ordered Mantu steamed pasta shells filled with seasoned ground beef, topped with a savory yogurt and garlic sauce. For the main dish, I got the lamb kabob comes with boneless spring lamb tenderloin, marinated and charbroiled. Ample amount of basmati rice (Palow/Chalow) with Sabzi (spinach, green onion, cilantro), and garden peas with right amount of spicy masala source. Price was just right for lunch menu and portions was very generous…so come hungry. I will definitely come back and try some other yummy delicious dishes. Great place to have lunch or dinner.

Excellent food and atmosphere. Just need to improve the service, more wait staff is needed to serve the whole restaurant. Had to request 4 times for different staff to bring salt. They finally brought it after the food was eaten.

Fantastic flavors and authentic cuisine. Went on a Friday night and service started out great. A couple of very large parties were seated and we were a bit forgotten, but it didn't ruin the experience. Would definitely return.

Liked the appetizer and the lamb kebob dish but wish there were more lamb and less rice. The lamb was fantastic in flavor but just a small portion for a meal. The place feels very authentic and I would love to try more of their dishes. Also tried the apricot chicken and wasn't wowed by it. Kinda like sweet and sour chicken and the meat was very tender but I was expecting some different spices/flavors to be there to make it different from chinese food.

This cuisine was next on our list to try. Completely impressed with how much o enjoyed my dinner experience. Reserving a table through Opentable was definitely a great idea since we were a party of 7. We started with a hummus sampler appetizer plate which was nothing short of deliciousness. They also gave garlic bread to munch on as well. For my entree I ordered the shrimp curry. I was a little nervous because I have not had this before in this cuisine so I didn't know what to expect. The use of yogurt instead of coconut milk gave a hint of tanginess to the curry. Surprisingly so, it was SOOO good, and they gave a decent amount of shrimp with yummy basmati rice. I finished it all. Simply delish.

Food was delish as always! Def recommend the ashuck for an appetizer! And the lamb was seasoned perfectly! We ordered the dal dish too (vegetarian style) and it was very tasty and had a great texture- not too soupy. Also, if you're a tea drinker, The hot tea is really good!

I love Middle Eastern food but was not all that familiar with Afghan cuisine. It's a delicious fusion of Persian, Indian and it's own unique flavors. Many of the dishes are stews served with rice. They also have kabobs. We had a lamb stew and a vegetarian daal. Both were delicious - very flavorful and unique. We also had an appetizer that was a leek dumpling with ground beef that was wonderful. The service was very attentive without being overbearing. The place was quiet on a Wednesday night and we sat outside watching people on University Avenue. Dinner for 2, with no beverages, came out to about $55. We will be back.

I dont often eat in Hillcrest as I live in North County. However, recently when I was in the area I decided to try Kyber Pass. I will definitely go out of my way to eat here again, and again! This is not a new place. I believe its been there for 15 years. The owners were there and were attentive. The waiter has been there for as long as they have been there. He was wonderful. I was told that the chef is a native of Afganistan. Wow! What a fabulous meal we had. The meat was like butter and the herbs were out of this world. Every dish was cooked perfectly. We experimented with several appetizers and entrees and each one was the best! I heartily recommend this wonderful family restaurant.
