5 days in NAPA -best meal so for
Food and service were fantastic! Meal moves relatively quickly which fits the vibe. Ad Hoc has a casual, friendly but very professional feel. This is not a 2 hour dinner, so know that going in. Service did not feel at all rushed to us, it just moves at a nice pace because the meal is served family style and there is one set menu. We are big fans after our first visit. Wish we had eaten here multiple times during our trip. Food is not overwrought or fussy, each dish was perfect.
Waiter was very friendly and relaxed. Explained the menu and optional addition. He also made sure to mention that we could request second portions of any and all courses.
Cocktails were very good!
First course: green bean salad was absolutely delicious. Green beans, crumbled bacon, crispy onions, marcona almonds and ridiculously delicious house vinaigrette. We requested another 1/2 portion. Waiter apologized for the 1st course coming out before our cocktails. We asked him to slow it down a bit and he did. It may sound odd but I cannot explain how unbelievably good this dish was.
2nd course, hanger steak with sauce Diane, fingerling potatoes and something they called a Swiss chard bread pudding. Hanger steak was perfectly cooked and definitely the most tender hanger steak I’ve ever eaten, a tiny bit salty though. Potatoes were delicious but the Swiss chard bread pudding was beyond amazing. It really didn’t seem like a bread pudding but we didn’t really care what they called it, it was phenomenal! We had a bit of extra steak and the Swiss chard dish.
Cheese course was perfectly balanced—hot biscuits, homemade applesauce and a wonderful sharp semi hard cheese. We were really getting full at this point, maybe should have skipped second portion of steak
Dessert was an ice cream sundae. Homemade vanilla ice cream with choc sauce, caramel sauce and strawberry compote, chantilly cream and pecans. Delicious and a candle for husband’s birthday.
Words cannot express what a phenomenal place this was! From Chris the bartender to the happy server that made our experience incredible! I would highly recommend saving your energy trying to get into the French Laundry and spend your time here. So amazing!!!
We had the Sunday Brunch Price Fixe menu and started our meal with a rich and creamy locally sourced Cottage Cheese served with a selection of sweet, fresh fruits consisting of kiwi, grapes, and strawberries!
That was followed by the succulent Buttermilk Fried Chicken and savory bacon & chive waffle, topped with flavorful Ad Hoc gravy.
We concluded our meal with the delightful Olive Oil Cake with lemon curd.
Everything was delicious!
I am SHOCKED that this is a Thomas Keller restaurant. If the man came in as a "secret shopper" he would be nothing short of horrified, starting with the bread basket. Food was ok if we were in one of those fast casual places, like TGIFriday's or one of those. Still can't get over this. Only good thing was the service.
Great food and service, the amount of food was just right given the number of courses and the wine pairing was excellent!
Food is simple and terrific. Fun atmosphere and attentive service.
One note is that the suggestions for wine on the large blackboard in the front of the restaurant do not have the price listed but the year. From across the room it appears to be the price as it is listed on the end of the board and not next to the wine, which one would expect for the year. I paid $25 for a glass of wine I thought was $14. It was good though.
The food was wonderful, and the wine pairing was the perfect accompaniment. We ordered the additional roasted bone marrow- something we’d never had and thoroughly enjoyed. Make sure you have an appetite!
Every other Monday is fried chicken night and it was spectacular. The Octopus, beans, Jalapeño mac n cheese and vanilla pudding made it a quite special meal
It was our 41st Wedding Anniversary- we sat next to a couple from Dallas on their 1st Wedding Anniversary. My only problem was the noise level... it was difficult to talk due to the noise level around us.
My second time there and it was amazing!!
Great food, even better service.
It gets a bit loud in prime time and you will be cozy with your neighbors. Fast service and perfectly paced meal service. In and out in about 1 hour and 15 min which is perfect for a couple having a nice meal.
Perfection as always. I trust any dish from this kitchen. Be adventurous and enjoy. A deal at any price
Great staff. Very attentive and informed. Even though it is a set menu they had thought ahead to accommodate gluten free options.
Of the multiple times we have been, this meal was below expectations. Although the food was good, we were disappointed with chicken.
Steady quality. Great value in Yountville.
We had a great experience at Ad Hoc! Everything was delicious from the garden salad to the lamb shank. The spicy fried chicken is a MUST add dish. It was perfectly prepared with the right amount of spicy and crunch. We definitely will be back the next time we are in Napa Valley.
Yummy food. Just right portions. Husband can't stop talking about the green beans.
I was disappointed, probably because I had too high expectations. While the food was well-cooked and the quality of the produce high, the salad had too many ingredients and an overpowering garlic sauce that drowned all the flavours (and could still be tasted the next day). The bbq sauce was too dominating. In general, I thought the menu lacked subtlety and balance of flavours and was too much on the heavy side
Fantastic food and service. There are a lot of great places to eat in Napa. Ad Hoc is top of our list as a place we want to return to.
Courses came a little fast and Felt mildly rushed with earlier reservation
Enjoyed the meal ! The ingredients are so fresh and you can definitely taste high quality .. service is good too. We’ll come back again
There is one set menu for the evening, so you are out of luck if there is a course that you don't like/are allergic to, etc. (We didn't know that's what they meant by "family style.") However! When my dining partner's face showed disappointment that the main course was beef, our amazing waiter offered her swordfish instead. We fell in love with the mushroom duxelles -- so creamy and delicious, full of flavor directly from the forest. The asparagus were cooked perfectly -- not too crunchy, not too soft -- with a tangy tomato topping. Fortunately the cheese was cow's milk because I gag on goat's milk cheeses. On the other hand, the dessert was a dark chocolate tart and my dining partner has a strong preference for milk chocolate. Also, the crust could have been a bit crisper and the whipped cream on top not so firm. Overall, we enjoyed the meal despite the noise level -- even at 9 p.m.
The hanger steak and red rice porridge were amazing. Try the walnut old fashioned!
Excellent food and a nice atmosphere. Would definitely dine here again when I'm in town.
Everything you’ve heard is true! The food is amazing, the staff are wonderful as are the locals who frequent the restaurant. Can not recommend enough! Don’t miss it.
We had reservations at 7:30, but were seated 10 minutes later. It wasn’t too bad. The food was delicious and plenty, just the roasted chicken was a bit on the salty side, it flavorful. Otherwise wouldn’t mind coming back again.
Never disappoints... we go 3-4 times a year and it’s always a treat!
Hostess was great, our server not so much. Food outweighed the ambience noice and service.
Fantastic family style dining ala Thomas Keller. Fun atmosphere and delicious food.
Food and service were excellent! Ambiance was fun and inviting!
My boyfriend and I heard about this place from the hotel and uber driver. We were able to get a last minute reservation which was awesome. The food here was amazing!! It was Monday so the chef has fried chicken as an add on to the tasting menu. It was the best friend chicken I’ve ever had in my entire life! The entire meal was fantastic and worth every penny. I would definitely recommend to anyone who likes trying new things.
Great food, especially the spicy buttermilk chicken!
The meal was an enjoyable experience. The quality of the food was about as expected, good but not exceptional. It was pleasantly served in an efficient manner. I felt that we could have spent the evening there or rushed through, it was up to us. I will definitely go back.
One of the best meals I have ever had the pleasure of eating. Absolutely fantastic staff as well. Looking forward to eating there again.
This is my third visit to Ad Hoc for brunch. The last time I was there was around 5 years ago. I remember my earlier visits as above and beyond other brunch alternatives. This visit I would say they are still above average, but other than the fried chicken there was nothing outstanding about the meal. The mimosa's are overpriced at $14. The savory waffle and blueberry buckle were both on the dry side. I would try other places in the valley before I would return to Ad Hoc...
Breakfast. Chicken and waffles. Awesome!
The food was amazing. Our waiter was awesome! Had to wait 30 mins for our reservation though and it was a little too loud for my tastes.
It is always a pleasure to dine at Ad Hoc. The menu changes daily, but the quality is consistent.
The dish pairings are simply genius. On our last occasion, we started with the best potato salad I have ever had. The potatoes had been roasted, not boiled, and the addition of sliced asparagus was delightful. There was slowcooked porkbelly for the main course, and it was paired with a subtle polenta and some simple, yet flavorful, veggies (peas, button mushrooms and carrots in a broth reduction). The porkbelly was rich and flavorful, and the polenta and veggies, appetizing in their own right, also acted as palette cleansers so that the porkbelly never became overwhelming.
The waitstaff are always prompt, responsive and pleasant without being intrusive. This is my favorite restaurant in the United States and in my top 3 world wide.
My only criticism is that, and this is quite pedantic, the tables are a little on the small side. With all of the dishes on the table things can get a bit crowded. As I said, it is a pedantic criticism and should absolutely not deter you from visiting Ad Hoc.
P.S. get the addons, even if you have to take part of it home with you in a box. You will not be disappointed. I never am.
