About

Act One is a restaurant that is attached to a theater and celebrates the stage, which is where it also derives its name. The walls are decorated with photographs and props from famous plays, operas and musicals throughout history. In addition to being physically connected to a theater, Act One is located near a couple other stages, which makes it a hot spot when any productions are being put on by either local acts or touring troupes.

Act One's menu is put together with American classics. Appetizers include pulled pork sliders, BBQ chicken wings, warm soft pretzels, fried calamari, Cajun tater tots and a mac and cheese with bacon and sundried tomatoes. Act One's options for meals are split between sandwiches and large plates. Some of the popular items include a pot roast with mashed potatoes and a house-made fish and chips.

The waiter was excellent. Wish I could remember his name.

Ample portions of good food, attentive service that's not intrusive. Cozy environment. But why must the hard-rock music be so darn loud?

My husband and I got married at Mayne Stage about 2 years ago. We live in the neighborhood and we always enjoy the food and service.

Its near the theatres and red line in Rogers Park, and in the same building as Mayne Stage. Good comfort food and salads along with full bar and decent wine list. Won't find better in the neighborhood.

I recently went for Act One as it seemed like an okay restaurant from the descriptions that I saw. The night we went there was no show - and there was a Cubs game - so the crowd and atmosphere was, frankly speaking, nothing but a cheesy sports bar. With four TV's, and a menu of mostly sandwiches and bar junk, it was definitely not my cup of tea for dinner. Even in the category of sports bar, the food wasn't that great.

We're enjoyed the walleye sandwich on a few occasions, and each time the food was very good+ Portions are large, and come with a side salad and slaw.

Decent wine list, generous pours.

Overall price: extremely good.

Food was edible but disappointing. Fish'n chips : fish was very dry, fries too much vinegar. Salmon also was dry, veggies were ok nothing special but ok. I might come back for a late night drink but not for dinner. Location was convenient to the theatre.

The staff at Act One never fails to please. Our server, Dale, was extremely pleasant and attentive, anticipating needs and making sure we were satisfied. The food's always good, and the service is great. I've never been disappointed at Act One!

After we ordered a bottle of wine, our long-suffering and excellent waitress, Samantha, returned and informed us, "We're out of pinot grigio." The only dry white alternative was an over-oaky Calif. chardonnay.

After a third member of our party joined us and ordered a vodka martini with a particular brand of vodka, Sam once again had to apologize for the bar, because it was out of that brand and would Stolichnaya do?

Sam's empathetic good nature got us beyond those setbacks, and the walleye was excellent, the salad entree was excellent, and the pot pie was excellent. The atmosphere is friendly, the noise level was one decibel short of "too noisy," and the rest rooms are clean.

We were visiting our daughter who is a Sophomore at Loyola Chicago and feasted for Sunday Brunch at Act One at the MayneStage (just two stops up the Redline from Loyola). My wife and I loved the Corned Beef Hash and Roast Beef Hash, respectively, and our daughter's burger was delightfully drippy and delicious looking. The pub setting is delightfully done, and the brief tour of the performing space left us longing to return for a performance on a future visit.

Their brunch is delicious and their Sunday night trivia is the best bar trivia I've found in the city. Their semi-nightly live music acts are cool too.

Calamari was fantastic, blackened salmon was just right, and the warm brownie ala mode was a dream. Our server, I believe his name was Matt, was friendly and just attentive enough. I would go back! No one in our group had negative things to say. The later it got the louder it got.

Went on Valentine's day for their special. We ordered the Mac and cheese as our appetizer, which was splendid. The salads were salads, but when the New York strip steaks came with mashed potatoes and sweet potatoe wedges- holy cow it was delicious.
My only are of improvement would be the chocolate truffles for dessert were too much for me to handle. A regular chocolate cake would have worked just fine. Either way I highly recommend this place!

If you are not going for a show or live music, plan to go early as it can get really loud in the pub area if that's not your plan. That happened the first time we went, and it was still good food/drinks/service. But this time we went around 6:30 and it was laid back and a great date night location. Really good craft beer selection and great location (half a block off the Morse Red Line). So great to have a pub with good drink options and a decent variety of pub foods options in the heart of East Rogers Park.

In addition to having the best music space in the city the Mayne Stage has food that is way above your basic pub grub. Their panko breaded chicken in lemon sauce is perfectly cooked, their fish and chips are outstanding and their chicken pot pie is certainly better than my moms which was Banquet. They also have great burgers and all of it is served in a beautiful Prairie Style bar/dining room.

Very convenient for going to event at Mayne Stage. To be fair, it has improved progressively since it opened some years ago. They've improved the food so that it's generally above the "bar food" level. I expect Act One will continue to improve. This past Friday evening we probably just had an "off" experience. The food was just ok and the service was uninspired.

We sat outside before the show last Thursday with two tables full of different folks eating different ways (vegan, burger lover, dieter, health conscious omnivore, beer connoisseur, no caffeine, you get the idea). The flatbread got us all off to a good start (salty but tasty). We sampled the menu from Salad Nicoise, to sandwiches, salads, one entree (no memory of what that was). Server got us separate checks, which endears her and gets better tips. Loved the big root beer float dessert. The cheesecake was small but yummy. Will certainly return before the next show.

Me and my girlfriend took her two young daughters and used the reservation system, which worked like a charm and when I added their ages in the special requests, we found when we got there that Wall-E was playing on the TV facing us! A nice touch. The food was very good (my girlfriend did experience some stomach discomfort from the pot roast melt she shared with me although I did not. It was rarer than I normally get it, however.) They were very accommodating to our family needs, although they seemed a bit understaffed as it took a little longer to get our server's attention. They always have world-class musical acts, and Jeff Brown did not disappoint. I wish the room would quiet down during performances, it's always so loud. A fun place.

Second time at this restaurant. First time wasn't great, so I thought of give if a second chance. I wish I hadn't. Greeted by a staff person at the door who said he wasn't the host but handed menus to me and my friend and told us to go sit anywhere. It took 6 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us with water or drink requests. The food (basic breakfast fare -- eggs, sausage, etc) took 20 minutes and then my eggs were cold, the sausage overcook and the English muffins quite un-toasted. The server was pleasant enough, but I don't quite understand the delay in service since I counted only 15 people in the place and 2 servers, 2 bussers, a bartender and a host on duty. It's too bad because physically it's got appeal and the location is perfect.

I invited my daughter and her boyfriend for dinner.Everything was great until more people arrived and our waitress didn't appear as often.
My daughter's boyfriends dish was too spicy and instead of sending it back I suggested bread. Well! I was really surprised when the bread appeared on the check. Of course it was taken off because I explained the problem to the waitress and I also told her I was not going to
pay for the bread!

My server on a Thursday night made me feel like he could make anything happen. I am cleansing and am limited to the food I can consume but together we were able to find a dish that would work. He was attentive to my preference of un iced water and would swap out waters that had been refilled with ice water. To me the service makes a restaurant!

From out of tow. Locals recommended Act One. We tried it prior to a show at Mayne Stage. The staff could not have been nicer or more helpful and we opted for comfort food (it was cold and raining in the summer) which hit the spot. We will be back next time we're in Chicago.

We were there for dinner before going to TimeLine Theatre. It was a great choice for location, right be the Red Line, and the steak sandwiches and sweet potato fries were very good. The best part was the welcome that we got from our wait person - Samantha. She was very helpful - my husband tasted beers before he ordered and she was attentive and charming. Ask for her!!!

We found Act One on Google Maps, then discovered it was an Open Table subscriber. Walking distance from both the Red Line El and the Lifeline Theater. Nice, quiet, wrought iron tables outside or a large, lively bar scene inside. My fish and chips was delicious and very generously portioned. My husband enjoyed the turkey wrap. The couple that dined with us liked the extensive beer menu. The servers were very friendly and knowledgeable. Already looking forward to going back.

We had a great Mothers Day brunch here. Excellent service (if a little slow; it was busy, after all), good to great food, nice atmosphere and bottomless bloody mary's! This is a great neighborhood spot that I think people over look because they think it's just a bar attached to the excellent Mayne Stage. But it's a good restaurant in its own right! We'll be back again and again.

I needed to make a Mother's Day reservation in the northern Chicago area and was running out of time! I wasn't sure about making a reservation at a restaurant I had never been to, but Act One had great reviews so I thought I would give it a shot! I was really happy I did! When I arrived, the table was already reserved and ready for us! It even had a "Reserved" sign with my last name on it, so I was impressed by that level of organization. The food was also delicious for brunch! They had a bottomless brunch option, which included an entree and unlimited bloody mary's, mimosas and beermosas -- at a really good price! All in all, I would go again and recommend Act One to anyone who was looking for a nice Sunday brunch with friends or family
