Acquolina owner Dario Nicotra hails from Livorno, a city on Tuscany's western coast and serves the food of his native Florentine region. Acquolina, which means "mouthwatering" in Italian, is reminiscent of his old days of hanging out at the beach in Tuscany and frequenting a local family restaurant. Acquolina offers casual brunch and lunch options, with omelets, breakfast pizza, pastries, and espresso in the morning and pasta, focaccia, and pizza made in an imported, stone oven in the afternoon. Dinner is more sophisticated, with meats and seafood plus pizza and pasta. Chef Meri Serpillo prepares all of the pasta daily and freshly for each dish. A selection of wines and beers from Italy (and California) complement all the dishes and the fresh fruit cocktails are the perfect aperitif before your meal. Acquolina offers outdoor seating directly in front of Washington Square Park for a classic San Francisco outdoor dining experience and some of the best people-watching in the city.

we we're going to a show and we're having difficulty finding a reservation. We stumbled upon Acquolina and were so glad that we did. Fantastic salad and delicious pizza. The crust is to die for. The staff was friendly and very conscientious. I'm so glad we stopped. We enjoyed the whole dining experience.
Had meatball and antipasto apps which were really good. Most of us had pizza while the wife had the lamb special. Pizzas were ideal for 2 people and excellent. The lamb chops were perfectly prepared. Staff were friendly even though we were the last table to leave.
Review of a busy Sunday night table for 5. Below average food - "cheesy saffron" ravioli sauce looked and tasted like Kraft Mac and Cheese sauce and Cannelloni cream was way too floury. All dishes bland. Pizzas were fine. Service slow and grumpy - had to keep reminding about missing drinks, missing food, etc right until the point of needing a tip. The location brings in many tourists, but we felt exploited for the price.
I have lived in sf for 20 years, and always want to support the smaller restaurants. I went to this restaurant because I had a good experience months ago with a friend. This time, unfortunately, the waiter could not have been ruder. We sat at the high table. We ordered our food and had to ask repeatedly for water, Parmesan, plates, etc. When the food came, he practically threw the plates down. When asked if they had vodka, because we didn't quite like the drink we ordered and wanted to order something different, he answered 'no' and walked away. No other suggestions. I brought my out of town guests in to experience a not so touristy restaurant and I was just extremely disappointed- and offended by the way they treated my guests. When I called back and was directed to management by the other waiter staff that wanted me to give the feedback, the 'management' said they were really busy and would handle a reservation but I would need to call back another time for feedback. I wanted to support a place that's usually not so busy, but now I know why they aren't so busy.
Awful. We couldn't get drinks for 20 minutes, then our waiter forgot 3 of our 4 food orders and wasn't even apologetic. The food was crap. Unless you are a tourist that doesn't know what Italian food should taste like, you will loathe this place.
We were a large group for dinner and they were the only spot in North Beach that had a spot open for a group of 8 at 8PM on a Friday night, last minute reservation. Great location and open space, it is casual and easy, stick to the pizza and simpler dishes and you'll be good.
We were craving authentic Italian food and thought we would try some place new in North Beach. Unfortunately, we were disappointed in the sauce at Acquolina. It was bland. We had the meatballs, cannelloni, and pasta bolognese with wild boar. With all of the other choices in this neighborhood, would not go back.
Excellent neighborhood restaurant across the street from Washington Square Park. Operated by a friendly, all-Italian crew and owner, Acquolina has amazing pizzas and salads and great service. Fun to sit outside and people watch. LOVE the Pizza Giorno e Sera - mozzarella, proscuitto, arugula, cherry tomatoes, parmagiano on a perfect thin crust as well as the Tiramisu for dessert. Highly recommend it!
A friend of mine told me this was a wonderful little restaurant... He understated it! Acquolina is authentic in every respect. The decor is real honest to God just like you remember it from the old days, good. The food is excellent and the waiter it that guy with whom you went to Catholic school . If you don't go here, it is your own fault. Oh bonus item: you can get a home cooked meal here for what it would cost for the waiter to say hi... In a "pretend" fancy italian San Francisco joint. We had a squid ink pasta with shrimp, clams, mussels and calamari in a spicy arrabiata sauce that somebody's mom would have made on a Sunday after Church. Go here!
The special of the house, cannelloni was served cold, without melted mozzarella and little sauce. When I requested more sauce it came in a small dish, cold. The swordfish was fair, potatoes undercooked. We arrived at 7:05 reservation at 7, waited until 7:50 for the main course. The staff was very nice, but we did not enjoy the meal at all. I was disappointed since it was for a special birthday. I wish I could have given a better review.
Superb service. The issue was the food. It was just o.k. not the spectacular find it used to be. Like a hollow shell.. Whereas before you came in and wanted to find more room to try the next item. always welcoming and never rushed ... Ambiance is incredible.
Our server was the best, which says a lot for a table of 8 at peak hour. The food was prepared very, very well--the pizzas and pastas were outstanding, as was the drinks and dessert. My wife's fish wasn't quite right and the cocktail selection is very small (just four), yet this is a very strong 4 rating for an up and coming restaurant in a hot neighborhood. You cannot go wrong here.
Our server was extremely responsive and helpful. Unfortunately the food was pretty poor and certainly pricey for the low quality. Our seafood appetizer's broth was tasty but a good third of the muscles and clams were unopened with one of the clam shells arriving crushed. The bruschetta was visually appealing but lacked any and all flavor, non-existent seasoning. Our bolognase pasta dish was also under seasoned with a watery sauce. The pasta had good, homemade texture but the overall dish was quite bland. We had high hopes for this neighborhood restaurant but could have easily made a much tastier meal at home for a fraction of the cost.
My 27 year old daughter (I'm 73) visited from Manhattan's Soho, and I wanted to take her out to a restaurant in my Northbeach neighborhood. I chose Aquolina since it always looked like an elegantly friendly place when I passed it on my dog walks. With a 7pm dinner reservation, we were immediately seated, and given a choice of two different tables. Our glasses of prosecco were affordable and delicious. Our waiter was friendly, yet not overbearing. The octopus appetizer came after a reasonable time, allowing us appropriate conversational time, and was delicious. My squid-ink pasta was perfectly prepared and just the right amount. I tasted one of my daughter's raviolis, and it was scrumptious. We were never rushed, nor were we ever uncared-for. My only criticism was that for my 73 year old ears, the sound level of the ambient music was a bit on the loud side. I would definitely go there again, and would recommend it to friends. A great addition to the neighborhood, and a great choice among Northbeach's many Italian restaurants.
The noise level in this small Italian restaurant was amazingly high. Forget about conversation. The food was good and the service acceptable. I ordered a bottle of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and received a bottle of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, with a confusing label. I didn't complain because the d'Abruzzo was very good and I couldn't blame the waiter for misunderstanding me given the high noise level.
We booked on Friday for a table of 10 on Saturday. Had to call back and add 2 more. They were accommodating. Varied yet small menu - made easy choosing. I believe the menu changes periodically. Food is a good value for the money.
Venessa our server was really great, especially at wrangling a big crew and offering menu suggestions.
Variety of wines on list - some very decent Italians (red & white) at a very nice price point. Do your research and you'll find some very interesting choices.
We ordered: pizzas (good thin crust, a little limp this night but very tasty - the prosciutto was excellent), eggplant parm (on starter menu but big enough for a main), pastas (homemade pasta - yum - bolognese & seafood were a hit, portions on the small side but the portion was right for the price), salads (meh - or maybe I got the dregs cuz we were all sharing).
They offered to serve us family style or individually.
The entire staff came out to sing us happy birthday in what seemed a warm and sincere way.
Tile floor makes noise resound. Impossible to hear if you have to call them on the phone.
First table we were offered (we were back down to a party of 10 at that point) was the communal table with others already sitting there. Not a great choice by the host as the space looked big enough for maybe 7 more but not 10 more. Plus they knew it was a birthday dinner - would have been awkward sharing the table. We were able to wait a few minutes for another options - probably would have been impossible on a non-rainy, regular busy night.
We will def come back - it's comfortable, unpretentious, there are many more things I want to try. We live in the Mission and I will drag myself across Market to revisit - if you knew me - that says a lot.
Food is not blow your mind - but truly interesting touches, solid execution and isn't it SO nice to have someone else cook for you and do the dishes?
Absolutely worth a visit.
