Acquolina owner Dario Nicotra hails from Livorno, a city on Tuscany's western coast and serves the food of his native Florentine region. Acquolina, which means "mouthwatering" in Italian, is reminiscent of his old days of hanging out at the beach in Tuscany and frequenting a local family restaurant. Acquolina offers casual brunch and lunch options, with omelets, breakfast pizza, pastries, and espresso in the morning and pasta, focaccia, and pizza made in an imported, stone oven in the afternoon. Dinner is more sophisticated, with meats and seafood plus pizza and pasta. Chef Meri Serpillo prepares all of the pasta daily and freshly for each dish. A selection of wines and beers from Italy (and California) complement all the dishes and the fresh fruit cocktails are the perfect aperitif before your meal. Acquolina offers outdoor seating directly in front of Washington Square Park for a classic San Francisco outdoor dining experience and some of the best people-watching in the city.

First, they gave our table away to someone who claimed to be me (using our reservation), so we had to wait 20 minutes after our reservation to be seated. They didn't really even apologize. Then, they seated us outside, which was fine, but they neglected us the whole time we were there (no refills, no asking if we needed more bread, etc.). The cheese plate was okay, but overpriced for the cheese quality. Then it took like 30 minutes for our entrees to come out. My pizza was fine, but not great. My husband's pasta was fine - he rates it 7/10. Then the bill was super slow also. They were busy, but it was my birthday meal and it really wasn't great, all things considered.

Place wasn't as nice looking as it seemed online. Completely open floor plan with cheap furniture. Wait staff was distracted and inattentive. Menu was very different than one posted online, they likely don't update it often. Wine list was very nice and reasonably priced. Porchetta was excellent.

The location is great! North Beach is my favorite part of San Francisco. We were a party of 6 ( 2 adults and 4 kids) and ordered pizza, eggplant parmigiana, spaghetti, the salmon special, and the pasta with wild boar ragu. Everything was hot and delicious when it arrived. Our server was kind and efficient. This is a way wonderful little neighborhood restaurant that is perfect for a casual family dinner. I would definitely recommend and/or go back.

I would not go back to this restaurant as they ruined a cork in my wine bottle and then still charged me a corkage fee. My table was not set up before I was seated.

It was dinner and on the earlier side, front door left wide open so it was freezing almost the entire meal, only warming up much later as guests came in. We were sat and given some water glasses then left alone while five visible staff members walked around talking to each other. When service actually started it was fine, food was delivered on time and hot, however gaining the attention of a server was a struggle. Not a bad experience but with so many places to choose from nothing experienced here merits a speedy return visit.

Something about the place does not set the right mood for Italian dining. Must be the lighting and the table setting. It has more of a cafe feel. Food was just alright. The waiter tried so hard to be nice.

We were not surprised the place was empty.
