Acquerello Ratings and Reviews
Sommelier was personable and helpful.
When asking for assistance in orienting us to the menu, including my 16yo daughter, server seemed irritated.
This restaurant may be more suited for sophisticated foodies. Still though, the staff should welcome a new guest’s curiosity and not demean them for not knowing what all of the fancy foods and accompaniments are.
Sometimes Michelin-starred restaurants end up being disappointments, e.g., pretentious staff, microscopic portions, exorbitant prices, etc. But Acquerello fulfilled all of our expectations, and gifted us with a memorable dining experience. The complimentary extras were a great surprise!
We were seated right next to the heat vent and I asked if they can kindly turn it down but the staff was rude that he couldn't and gave me attitude. It made me sick and sleepy. The food service is super slow. I know it's a 3 hour dinner but they could of picked up the pace a little.
Acquerello probably doesn't need another great review, but once again, everything we had was amazing. Covered in truffles for my husband cause it was his birthday, but equally great for me, the picky eater. It tastes Michelin starred and it is one of the few restaurants in SF that is. It's pricey, but worth every penny for the food, service, ambiance, etc.. Don't overdo and miss the cheese plate and dessert.
Waiters pester you continuously. You don’t have 30 seconds to have a conversation without being interrupted. They poured the wine into a carafe and then put it on another table and we had to keep asking for it so eventually I had them put the carafe on our table but they did not seem pleased about it.
All in all the food was good and the atmosphere was quiet. But the constant interruptions ruined the enjoyment. Plus they give you about five “chef surprises” and by the time your meal comes you’re full.
Wouldn’t go back and I wouldn’t recommend it.
Acquerello has been a favorite of ours for more than 20 years. There is a lot to love about this place (see the latter part of this review.) This year, however, we ordered the seasonal truffle menu, which was a very expensive mistake (over $700 for dinner for two with a bottle of wine but without the shaved truffle supplement.) Shaved white truffle came on one dish (you could pay even more for more shaved truffle on all the courses--don't) and the truffle was relatively flavorless and didn't have truffle aroma -- it was clearly over, which should have been spotted before the truffle came out. The first course, a truffled custard, was outstanding. The middle course, the signature tube-shaped pasta with foie gras, truffle and Marsala, was also outstanding as usual. The desert was also something to behold. It looked for all the world like a hard-boiled egg served on a fancy plate of greens, but it was really panna cotta, mango puree and a bunch of other stuff I didn't write down and it was very good. The rest of the menu was a disappointment, unfortunately, and we wouldn't order it again. The presentation of each course was, as always, beautiful, but wasn't up to Acquerello's established par (for it's still pricey but less expensive regular menu.) Service was excellent as always--never felt ignored and never felt bothered. Just right.
this is the best and most expensive dinner I've ever had. It definitely fits the saying, you get what you pay for. Every detail was in place, even different color napkins based on the pants or dress color. The wine list was beyond belief. I'd love to walk through the cellar! I ordered a magnum which they did not have and the wine steward replaced it with a much better bottle at the first choice price. A special surprise were the three small courses that started the experience before we got to the ones we chose. And the thoughtfulness of a small taste for the guests who did not order a mid-course so they wouldn't have to sit there and watch the rest of us eat! This is as good as it gets. The flavors of various courses were explosive.
We were so lucky to happen upon this restaurant
We were in town for a wedding and wanted a great romantic date night the evening before the wedding
I came across this restaurant and WOW
How lucky we were
We did the seasonal dinner with wine pairing
We dined for 3.5 hours and the time was wonderful
Each and every course
Each and every pairing were over the top
Thank you for a great evening

The service at every level is excellent. The food is superb. Every so often they throw in a small bite for free. I got the 5 course prix fixe, my wife the four course. We had the sommelier choose our pairings for us. I was particularly impressed with the minerally Northeast Italian white paired with the lobster cup pasta. My wife, not a fan of white wine, tried mine then ordered a glass for herself. The key to understanding Acquerello is that the chef/co-owner loves what she does and that attitude filters down to the entire staff. We look forward to our next visit.
We have been at this restaurant before and it was a very good experience in the past. This time service got to be overwhelming with endless descriptions of tiny portions. You could barely put something down before it was whisked away to the point of becoming clear that they wanted us out of there as soon as possible. The clever little portions were mostly decorations rather than substance. For my main course which was advertised as a steak I got two tiny strips of beef about 1 inch wide by three inches long over salted and not very tender. Dessert was very nice. Sorry to see a fine restaurant place so much emphasis on show.
