Our group enjoyed the mole and the duck crepes! We will definitely be back!
Wonderful overall experience!!
We always dine at Acenar before going to the Majestic. Love the river view and the coconut margaritas. Wish they had decent fans on the patio so we could dine outside in the Summer,
I remembered this restaurant as being much nicer than it was on this visit. The outdoor area needs refreshing - it just seemed kind of tired. We were at a table that was technically by the river, but it was shoe-horned into a corner behind a pillar, and it was hard to actually see the river over the wall. The frozen margaritas were just ok - smallish and a little melted. The food was fine- but not as creative or nicely presented as I remembered from previous visits. Disappointing overall.
Excellent food and excellent service in a miserable environment. Service was professional and prompt, the House Margaritas were among the best we’ve ever had, and the enchiladas verdes were delicious. Why, then, wouldn’t we recommend Acenar? It’s among the loudest places we’ve ever been—concrete floors and no acoustic panels. And the noise problem was super-intensified by the fact that tables are packed so close together - maybe 18 to 20 inches apart, and we had to ask people at both of the adjoining tables to move so we could squeeze past them into our seats! Fine food and service, but just not worth the hassle and the noise!
Ambiance was great! Service was on point and the food was delicious! Richard was our server and he did an outstanding job! Would definitely recommend Acenar for any occasion.
I was very disappointed with the food quality at Acenar. Acenar used to be one of my favorite restaurants to visit but the food was very different this time around.
The tortilla soup lacked flavor and tasted like tomato soup and the fajitas were less than impressive for the price. I think the meal was overpriced for the quality.
Acenar came recommended, and everything on the menu sounded really good. Unfortunately, it was too loud to talk, and the food was bland and not up to the cost.
Wonderful experience! Great food! Fast service!
Very happy with the service and the food. The guacamole was excellent
Interesting menu with a number of variety and the quality as well as quantity of food was great. The margaritas were very good as well and the service was quick!
Our server, Nicholas, was VERY attentive and provided good recommendations. Food was good. Location very nice.
We enjoyed our dinner at Acenar. The service was a little slow, and it took awhile for anyone to get to us despite the fact that we had a reservation. But our server was nice, and we were all catching up so it wasn't too bad. We had the prickly pear margaritas (Tuna Maragarita), the queso, guacamole, and cheese enchiladas. The enchiladas were really good, as were the margaritas. The queso was nothing to write home about. Not bad, but not amazing either. And you really don't get a very large serving of it. The guac is made fresh at your table. Ours was good, and they'll make it as mild or spicy as you want. But again, it wasn't anything crazy special. Still good, but it had a lot of lemon in it. The view of the river is nice, but it's not on the main strip of the riverwalk. It's all within walking distance, of course, but it's a little more out of the way. Overall, we enjoyed our experience there!
We really liked this place. The location is perfect (right on river walk) and the food was great. The margaritas are excellent as well. I would definitely recommend trying Ácenar and will certainly return when I am visiting San Antonio.
This is probably the best Mexican restaurant I've tried in San Antonio, AND it's affordable AND it's right on the riverwalk AND by the street, so you don't have to walk too much or deal with crowds if you don't want to AND they even have (limited) valet parking (or a $20 parking half a block away, or $10 1.5 blocks away).
Very much recommended.
Over all it was decent, but was expecting more. We had just finished seeing a show at the near by Majestic Theatre and made a group reservation at this restaurant. I noticed more than one server or staff of some sort eating on the floor. I don’t know if they don’t get enough breaks to eat, but in all my dinning experiences this was a first to see so many different people eating on the floor. The positive was that our server was excellent. Top notch and professional.
We arrived a little early, still were able to get seated right away. We were greeted by our server, drinks that were recommended were great, salsa was perfect with the chips, entrees looked beautiful and were huge . Definitely going back .
Excellent service for a large group of 10 people having a business dinner. The food came out quickly and the waitress was very attentive. I would highly recommend for a group dinner. The salsa was also outstanding.
Great night with the family. Kids enjoyed children’s menu which was well priced.
Shrimp tacos were excellent as were the complimentary chips and salsa.
Loved the food! Delicious salsa!
I never leave reviews, but I feel like I have to for Acenar. This was possibly the worst dining experience I have ever had. First- we had a reservation and still had to wait 30 minutes to be seated. Then once we were seated we were put in a corner and no one came to take our order or even came by the table for 30 MINUTES until we finally had to flag someone down. Finally what I am assuming is a manager came by and took our orders and was still not very apologetic of helpful to resolve the situation. I thought for sure they would at least comp a round of drinks or something but no. A table beside us was seated after us and had eaten and left before we ever received any food. Really had high hopes for this place after seeing positive reviews, but I will not be back.
The food was really good! Service was good, but that is where it ends. The place is extremely noisy because of the concrete floors,, noisy metal chairs, etc. The restaurant could really use updating. Tables were old laminate and very uneven, chairs were wood veneer with plenty of scratches with chrome metal legs that drug noisily across the somewhat dirty stained concrete floor. The Men's room was atrocious, water everywhere, dirty floors littered with paper towels, etc.
We were there early on a Saturday evening before the crowds. I cannot imagine the noise during prime time.
I had the guacamole tableside and fish tacos as a reviewer suggested and it was fabulous! The server was very attentive.
When entering the restaurant we were greeted by the hostess who struggled initially it seemed to recognize that we were ready to be seated even though we had reservations via Open Table. They knew we were coming but had given prime tables to others who walked in.
We were put in a back corner of the back dining room. It was hot, due to a lack of a/c working due to mechanical failure. When tables opened where there was more airflow we weren’t asked to change tables. Was it because we had a 2 year old with us? There was only one other table that had a child and they were in the same area. Hum......
Service was slow at the start. We had drinks come sporadically from the bar but our waiter and other wait staff were helpful in working to get us what we needed. We ordered our grandsons dinner first and they were extremely quick in getting us this food to keep him engaged.
Our food was extremely high quality and our initial frustration from the hostess was put to rest. We were all happy with our dishes and I feel in love with the duck chalupas! Fabulous.
Hopefully the chaos of our initial dealing with the hostess doesn’t affect others to walk away like we almost did.
This was our first visit to San Antonio and this restaurant was a great choice!! The food was delicious and the waiter was fantastic. We really enjoyed our experience there and recommended it to several other travelers in our group, whom then went there for dinner on another night.
Also, it was appreciated that the day of our reservation, they confirmed.
We enjoyed a delicious dinner on the balcony overlooking the Riverwalk. The server was very friendly. The crab tacos and shrimp tacos were very good. Also enjoyed the guacamole made table side. The only downside to eating outside are the annoying birds trying to find scraps. I would recommend this place again but suggest eating inside.
Beautiful restaurant with indoor and outdoor river walk seating options. Service and food were very good. Very loud inside if you are trying to converse during dinner.
Delicious food and really nice waitress! The atmosphere was also very pretty
A go to place when we’re going to an event at the Majestic
Another couple joined my spouse and I for dinner. We initially asked to be seated inside but the noise level was deafening so we then requested a table outside where the noise level was more acceptable (except when the mariachis started playing) although the temperature level was not as comfortable as we would have liked. The food was very good. I really enjoyed the cochinita pibil. My frozen margarita was also quite good. The shared mixed appetizers were fairly standard Tex-Mex fare although the beef skewers were extremely tender and well spiced. The rest of my group seemed well pleased with their entrees as well.
We were expecting a similar experience as we would have at Rosario's and it didn't come close to it. The food was underwhelming and the atmosphere was mediocre.
Acenar is a great place for a quick bite downtown. Their vegetable enchiladas were fabulous and their black beans were delicious and I usually don't go for black beans over pinto. The staff was great and their suggestions were on point!
More than your average Mexican, the surprises are in the cuisine. Excellent tastes.
We had a fantastic time here! Great brunch, great margaritas, and such a chill and laid back atmosphere. Would definitely recommend!
Really need to work on restricting access to pigeons. Negative effect on appetite when one decides to use your table or shoulder as a restroom. Having said that I like eating at Acenar because the food is adequate and I like the location. There is nothing special about the food. There are a number of Mexican Restaurants that serve similar quality in San Antonio and on the River and in some cases cheaper. But the location is a plus. It is near cheap parking and offers a great place to start a walk on the river. I would recommend this to every tourist staying downtown for the food and for locals to come downtown, eat and then visit the river. We live in San Antonio and eat there at least 4 - 6 times a year.
Nice patio spot. Table and chairs could have been cleaner. A lot of birds - need to find a way to mitigate that.
Glass on patio was grungy.
Food and service were both good. I'd come back, but with slightly different expectations.
Overrated for the price. sat on the patio, very dirty. Menus were dirty with dried food, wait staff uniforms were not clean. The chips and salsa were pretty good. Please don't order the queso, it had a hint of sweet added and very thick. Tables were small and plates were oversized, made for a very crowded table, had to stack items in a chair.
Dropped by before a show at the Majestic. Reasonably priced and great service. Looked at other restaurants near the Majestic but think their prices are a bit high.
We go to Acenar each time we go to the Majestic Theater. This restaurant never disappoints. We highly recommend this for anyone no matter what the reason for being in downtown.
