Acadia is a two star Michelin restaurant in Chicago's South Loop Neighborhood. Chef Ryan McCaskey's five and nine course menu is seasonal with contemporary takes on classic food. Most roots come from classic American, French and Italian influences. Seafood and shellfish products will mostly be sourced from the area in Maine where Chef McCaskey spent his summers, but also which happens to be a source to some of the highest quality shellfish in the world.

I'll begin with some positives. The staff was very friendly and courteous. The atmosphere was very elegant and romantic to say the least. The meal? In general, everything we ate was ok. The portions? Suffice it to say, after the five course meal we immediately ordered Thai take out for $19.16 to satisfy our cravings for the evening. By the way, we are NOT very hefty eaters, The cost of our meal? OUTRAGIOUS!!!! For the cost of the meal we could have dined at some of Chicago's best and still saved several hundreds of dollars in the process. To net it out, the meal was CLEARLY not worth the cost and the food quantity was equally disappointing. We've dined at other Michelin-starred restaurants and this was by far our most disappointing and upsetting experience.
We were extremely disappointed in what we thought would be a GREAT experience.
Unfortunately, we were very disappointed in the Thanksgiving buffet. The vegetables were all undercooked (hard brussel sprouts anyone?), the buffet layout was awkward (top of a serving dish fell off - nearly on someone sitting right next to the buffet), and there were no options but the typical Thanksgiving spread. We had not eaten there before - and given the reviews of the restaurant, we were excited to try it. We would not recommend any of their holiday buffets - you simply will not have the Michelin-starred experience you’re expecting. The staff were good overall - a few star performers and a few that could have been more approachable.
Went for Thanksgiving lunch. Wasn’t apparent at the time of reserving that a buffet meal was to be served nor apparent in the confirmation received. Perhaps it was my fault for not scouring the Acadia website ( under events) beforehand. Upon our arrival we found the hostess welcoming but unable to answer questions about the availability of table service in the lounge area. As the bar seats were occupied, we sat at a small table and after a couple of minutes retrieved a drink menu ourselves from the service stand since no one approached us. About 5 mins later a bartender came over and took our order. His service was cordial and the drinks were great. Of note the upkeep of the decor needs attention. The lounge banquette was terribly stained and the table that we were seated at had burn marks on the top. There was also a tear in the dining room banquette. Not trying to be overly critical but for a Michelin 2-star, a certain level of attention to detail is expected.
We were seated at our table at the time of our reservation. The service was very attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. The food was well presented and flavorful. We especially enjoyed the foie gras. However we were a little disappointed that it wasn’t the tasting menu but overall the food was good.
Would we go back? Not sure. Perhaps we’d try the tasting menu but unlikely for a special event type meal.
Greeters need to improve their attitude. Even more so, this applies to the bar tender with whom we interacted while waiting for the table to get ready. Good overall experience; unfortunately, initial impression was rather bad. Something that needs to be improved if they want to keep their Michelin two-star status.
Acadia was fantastic. I wanted to experience a Michelin rated restaurant, so that's what I did.
I came here after proposing, so once I got to the restaurant, the staff knew this was for a special occasion. They offered free champagne to celebrate and were extremely welcoming and happy for us.
Dinner for two, so I ordered each of us the five course tasting menu. I also added the wagyu beef and cheese course offered. Our now seven course meal turned into a ten or more course meal as we were given extra dishes to celebrate and to try out.
All of the food was presented well. Big shout out to the cream based soup, which is served in a bowl of lightly burning pine, so it smells amazing. Also, the wagyu beef was the most tender beef I've ever had. Didn't get the wine pairing, but ordered a bottle with dinner, a nice French white wine.
We had three different dessert courses, including a brand new one, and some French press coffee. Fantastic.
The experience for us took almost 4 hours, but it was well worth it. Get the tasting menu for any special occasion. You won't regret it.
Service was top notch. Cleaning the table, refolding napkins, and pulling our chairs out when returning to our seats were just a few things the staff did. You're well taken care of.
Overall, amazing experience. I'll definitely be back.
Only issue we had with the 5 course meal was that the charred wagyu eaten in the leaf could have been better. The char obscured the flavor of the wagyu and as a result the flavor of the beef didn’t shine through. Also would have been better served with a knife and fork.
The cuisine was quite creative and good. There was enough variety in even the 5 course meal that even if you weren't thrilled with a given course, just wait a few minutes and something new and quite different would come by. The wine pairings were solid but not stupendous, but the wine service was quite knowledgeable and affable. The room is a bit on the noisy side due to a steady dose of rock coming over the sound system, but it was good rock if you like the Grateful Dead. Overall, a restaurant that lives up to the fine/creative dining segment.
It was our anniversary they didn’t said nothing, my boyfriend has a shellfish allergy we put that information in our reservation we talked to the server and he forgot about that, they recognized that mistake but for at 2 Michelin Star Restaurant I wasn’t expecting this situation.
We had a fantastic experience at Acadia. I and my husband had the 10 course Tasting Menu. The food was amazing and brimming with white truffles (which were the specials for the day). The staff was super attentive and courteous. The napkin was folded every time either of us went away from the table, the plates were picked efficiently and the next course was brought out promptly - all in all Michelin class service! The staff also seemed knowledgeable on the dishes they were bringing out . The sommelier offered great wine pairings and even topped me for free a couple of times (perks of being the Birthday girl I guess!). They even gave us personalized Menus to take home and some granola (yummiest granola ever!) for breakfast the next day. Overall, we had a lovely dinner and I would highly recommend Acadia!
I emailed the only address they have on the website to report our dining experience and got no response - not a good sign.
We joined to celebrate my wife’s birthday, and that was mentioned when I called to confirm the reservation. While we were not expecting any special treatment for the celebration, we would have at least liked some sort of acknowledgement from the staff otherwise there is no point in asking if the dinner is for a special occasion. In addition to that, a couple that was seated after us right next to our table was apparently also celebrating a birthday and was warmly welcomed and offered two flutes of champagne. Really not happy about the disparity in service.
Some of the wait-staff who did not appear very knowledgeable about the food and wine they were serving. There was clear difference between one waiter who clearly understood the wine pairings and another who seemed rushed and unprepared. In general, everything sounded extremely rushed and didn’t convey any excitement about what we were about to eat or drink.
Maybe a bad night but I would not expect such a miss from a 2-star restaurant.
This is my first online review, I never bother but feel compelled to weigh in on a place that has earned awards and a Michelin star.
I have been fortunate to enjoy meals at several fine dining establishments in Chicago - Alinea, Next, TRU, Grace, Trotter's, Trio, and now Acadia. While there are several similarities with these heavy-hitters, the difference (and shortcomings) between Acadia and the others were quite evident.
- Food - inventive and creative. But plating was occasionally overly-styled.
- Ambiance - attractive and on par with other fine eating, but music was louder than necessary and unusual, with song choices like Led Zeppelin (for example) a somewhat incongruous match with the trying-for-elegance vibe of the place.
- Service - the biggest shortcoming here. They tried real hard but seemed like they were less seasoned and at ease than one would expect at a well-established restaurant. The delivery of courses were inconsistently brought by 2 servers (we were a party of 2) and poorly synchronized. The explanations were delivered well enough but seemed memorized vs. well understood. Plates were still damp with dishwasher moisture (eew), napkins were not re-folded when we made brief visits to the restroom, and the biggest gaffe was when an obvious spill from a complimentary cocktail served table side was NEVER wiped up. I left the wetness for most of the meal just to see if anyone would think to clean off the table; they didn't.
There was a small potted plant on our table that was moved around countless times over the 10-course meal. Totally silly and unnecessarily fussy.
The 10 course meal took more than FOUR hours to complete. Pacing was painfully slow, with pairings that were poured 10 minutes ahead of the next course so the odds were good the wine would be consumed by the time the next plate arrived.
For the cost of a flight to Europe, and nearly the duration, I wish I were in Paris instead right now.
This is simply not fine dining. How this place scored a couple of Stars is beyond comprehension. Food was a triumph of style over substance with minimal style. I ate at Aan de Poel last year in Amstelveen and that restaurant was a one star at that time. Wary as I am of comparison, this Chicago eatery is not even close to being in the same league as the Dutch restaurant for food quality, a menu with verve, portion size or service. Extremely disappointed as we'd travelled from Australia and this was to be our 'special' family dinner but we all walked out 1000 Australian dollars poorer and a hell of a lot wiser when it comes to a return visit.
Unless you know where it is, you'll likely drive right past this place; but inside it is a treat for the taste buds. I'm not a foodie, and do not often spend $100s on a meal, but this was a delight. Each course was as much art as taste. The waiters were attentive...they didn't just mouth off a bunch of words and run off, but rather seemed to enjoy our experimentation as much as we did.
Definitely not a place for those with a thin wallet, but a nice treat for someone special...even if that someone is just you.
The combination of ingredients, flavors, and textures is nothing short of amazing. A brilliant meal all the way around. I only short the stars when it comes to value: the Wagyu beef, at $75 for an add-on, is quite pricey for the quantity received; then again, it was outstandingly delicious.
I was both impressed and disappointed with my visit to Acadia in Chicago. Having eaten at a number of Michelin star restaurants around the world, it's always great to try new places that Michelin has determined is upping its game.
Acadia did not disappoint. Having the 10 course tasting menu (which included a number of pre, mid, and post dishes not included in that count) was a good experience. A small number of dishes were just exquisite; most dishes were very good; and a small number really missed the mark (the asparagus and the lamb tenderloin). Most of the wine pairings were done well, but there were a couple of misses. When the sommelier explains that people either love or hate the Chinato--maybe it's not the best choice for a forced, matched pairing. They did comp me a glass of port--which worked much better with the dish--but, things just need some small tweaks.
The only real downside to the evening was the service. It was certainly not bad--it just wasn't up to the high standard that I would expect for restaurants of this caliber. There were a number of mis-queues where a dish came before a wine pairing; a waiter came and removed a glass that someone had just set for the next pairing (twice); and folks just seemed new (maybe 50% of the staff). Every restaurant has to train its staff, but the polish on all of the service was not there--and it showed and ended up detracting from what would have been a great experience.
With all of that said, Acadia is still definitely deserving of a rating of 5 on TripAdvisor and 1 Michelin star. The chef still is experimenting with and refining new dishes; not all of them will hit the mark, but a stagnant chef is far worse. Refinement of the service should continue to evolve, but it's something that will have to be watched. If you're looking for a fine dining experience in Chicago, do check out Acadia. You'll enjoy the food.
Awesome place to try fusion style food. Perfectly combined Vietnamese and Italian cuisine by chef. One thing to notice is that the entire table needs to order the same tasting menu. (For example, if one of you want to try the five course tasting menu, the rest of you will have to make the same choice.)
