Contemporary American
Acadia is a two star Michelin restaurant in Chicago's South Loop Neighborhood. Chef Ryan McCaskey's ten course menu is seasonal with contemporary takes on classic food. Most roots come from classic American, French and Italian influences. Seafood and shellfish products will mostly be sourced from the area in Maine where Chef McCaskey spent his summers, but also which happens to be a source to some of the highest quality shellfish in the world.

Everything was going well until the 6th course when my wife (who I joke is a bean pole and has the appetite of a bird) said to me, “I’m starving!”

The bare minimum standard for eating at a restaurant is to walk away satisfied - not stuffed - but at least satisfied. That goes for a Michelin started restaurant too.

After making it clear to the waiter we were disappointed we made our way to the door. When we explained our disappointment again to the front of house staff and joked that we were going to shake shake after we left, they joked back that “next time” we should try the burger that they serve in their bar.

What a slap In the face. Had they offered to cook us a burger they actually could have turned a bad night into a great night. Instead they just laughed it off.

And it wasn’t just us who felt this way. The couple next to us heard our joke about shake shake and joked with us that they were on their way to “the wiener circle”. They felt the exact same way we did.

The young kid that showed us to our table also spilled a glass of Prosecco all over himself and us when seating us. That stuff happens, but coupled with the food and insensitivity from the front staff I just had to mention.

On the plus side the wine was incredible as was the sommelier. Was surprised to see so many organics on the menus. We went with the pairing but could have our pick of many bottle under $100 which is a great value for this type of restaurant.

The food was also top notch. Just not nearly enough of it. We thought the portion sizes were fine in the beginning...that it would be death by a thousand cuts...but in the end we walked out hungry.

We wanted more of your amazing food.

You left us wanting more, but we won’t be returning nor recommending.

Acadia is more than a meal, it is a complete sensory experience. The food is selected, prepared and presented with incredible care. Every bite it to be savored. The only match to the food, is the service; incredibly professional and informative. This is a Chicago dining experience not to be missed.

Having tried many Michelin starred restaurants around the world we came away from Acadia very disappointed. The food was nice but we were not blown away with different tastes that we would have expected. It started well with a crab tart with jalepeno. The casing was light and crisp and the filling was tasty but no hint of jalepeno, unfortunately it tappered off from there. The service was poor, having to wait and prompt several time for our wine to be topped up and water to be refilled was disappointing. We also had to wait a long time between a course, we don’t like to be rushed but when the course is a bite there is no need to wait over 25 mins. Guests came in over an hour after us and ended up a course ahead of us. When the tip is added for you to a large bill we expect the service to be on par and sadly this was not.

The pescatarian tasting menu was so so. One of the dish was like Japanese Sunomono with Enoki mushrooms and kelp. The chef’s recommendation was to drink the broth after finishing the mushrooms. I know the Japanese food extremely well as I’ve lived there. Drinking the broth of Sunomono was like so rediscutons. First of all, the broth was too strong as as it was made like Japanese like sunomono. When I compare other French chefs in France and US such as Jean George, it was not worth in that much price.

The food was exquisite and the presentation was impeccable. The seafood was very fresh and the wine pairing was generous. We have been to a lot of Michelin restaurants and were very impressed with this one. Thank you, chef McCaskey!

The service and the presentation of food is very poor, and the portion of the food should be little bit larger. And I do not know why this restaurant deserves Michelin 2 stars.

ate here on Saturday 2/16. I ordered their specialty Valentine’s Day tasting menu.

The tasting menu costs $115 for 5 courses which is more expensive per course than the 10 course tasting menu offered all the time. With the specialty menu being more expensive we expected the courses to be even more exciting and fulfilling. Instead we were rushed through each course at what seemed to be a way to pump us in and out.

Our final primary course of steak was what really pushed us over the edge and upset us. The course calls for a bacon wrapped sirloin with leek, robuchon potatoes and creamy kale. No leek was on our dish to start with, it was replaced with a baby carrot instead. Both the potato and baby carrot were used identically on the dish prior. This felt extremely lazy. For only 5 courses to wow a customer and you chose to repeat ingredients several times. We felt the lack of attention to that detail on a more expensive and smaller menu was shocking. On top of all this, on one of our steaks the bacon was undercooked, rubbery, and chewy. In the picture below is the dish, hard to believe that this was served in two star michelin restaurant looks a lot more like a middle of the ground steakhouse dish.

We had such excitement and expectations going into our first two michelin star experience. We left this dinner feeling scammed by the restaurant who was taking advantage of people wanting to splurge for a special occasion. Never have a felt like I was taken advantage of at a michelin restaurant let alone a 2 star michelin restaurant.

Would personally recommend Elske or Topolobampo if you’re in Chicago looking for an outstanding tasting menu.

Belle expérience gustative, parfois déroutante (peut-être trop sur les desserts)
Seule proposition en menu dégustation 10 plats (petites portions).
Beaucoup de créativité sur les gouts, certains excellents, d'autres audacieux mais a à affiner.
Excellent service digne 3*
Salle trop "froide" à notre gout, pas assez cosi.

I have been enjoying Acadia since the chef first opened (Wow, what value then: $110 for 10 courses) and his food is still top-notch and his creativity is amazing. The service and wine-pairings have, unfortunately, declined. Some of the outstanding dishes were the peekytoe crab to start, the scallop, tagliatelle pasta (yummy — wish I had 2 servings) and breads (those are all separate dishes). I cannot remember them all —and I do not take pictures — but they were tasty! The service, though, left a lot to be desired and, at $950 for 2, the service should be as outstanding as the food. At one point, the waitperson refilled my water glass and rather than walk around me, she reached directly over me (while eating) and the table to refill my date’s glass. She said ‘excuse my reach’ but there is no excuse — she should have walked to the other side of the table to refill his glass — and that is just basic service not even high-end service. The table was not even in a corner (where it may be difficult to reach the other side) as we were seated in the middle of the room. The wine-pairings were NOT good — actually, worse than the service. I really dislike saying that but there were more than a few glasses that I took one sip and could not even drink it. Usually, the staff will notice if you are not eating or drinking your food or beverages — particularly with a tasting menu —and inquire why but not a single server commented, nor asked, about the full (undrinkable) glasses of wine left untouched - we had to ask them to remove the glasses and they still did not ask why we were not drinking them. I do not pay that kind of $ to not enjoy the wine. The guy serving the wine described every glass as “amazing” — none were and only a couple were drinkable. To sum it up: Food = Amazing! Everything Else = Not so Much. The chef is creative and knows how to please the palette. Go for the food but order a glass of wine (or two) of your own choosing and you will enjoy it more.
