Academic Bistro - Drexel University Ratings and Reviews
I enjoyed all the delicious food. The only con for me would be the dessert option. There was only one option for dessert and I couldn't eat it even though there was a variety of that dessert. I was allergic to an ingredient in the dessert, luckily there was a Gelato substitution given to me .
I've only ever eaten here for lunch; however, the food has always been delicious and the staff very professional. I had the key lime tart with avocado ice cream for dessert. I didn't know what to expect at first, but the combination of the 2 flavors was amazing!
Under the exceptional leadership of Mrs. Kristina Burke, the students have demonstrated genuine and upscale customer service.
The three-course Italian lunch, menu created by Chef Ziccardi, was an amazing Italian cuisine journey. First course: Zuppa di Pesce, fresh fish soup with tender dumplings.
Second course: Cannelloni, flavorful cannelloni with tomato sauce and fresh basil on top
third course; Olive oil cake. beautiful, dense and rich olive oil cake with fresh made whipped cream and sliced seasonal fruits
This restaurant is staffed in the kitchen and the dining room by Drexel students. Perhaps the edges are a bit rough, but the intention and eagerness levels are very high. The ambience is mellow and of good quality. Probably most important to many it is an extraordinary bargain - $10 for a three course meal. It took two hours for our group of 15 so don't come here thinking of a rapid lunch. Also, be aware that it's cash-only. That was a shock necessitating a trip to an ATM in driving rain - ugh.
I love spending my lunch hour at Academic Bistro. Dana greets me with her amazing smile while Zach and Amanda did a great job describing the menu items and serving delicious creative dishes.
The black bean burger was excellent and the zip sauce was spicy good. I also liked the shrimp cocktail. By far the most impressive item I tasted so far this semester was yesterday's chocolate mousse with a hint of Ginger; a wonderful ending to a fabulous lunch. It was light and balanced so nicely with a hint of ginger nicely presented with a pineapple crème, fresh cream and two ginger and chocolate crisps. Kudos to the creative Chef who put that together!
A delicious, attractive meal served by our server with the right blend of reserve and warmth -
The menu is attractively laid out - I liked having a full description of each item
The flatbread was sensational - scent, temperature, flavor
Thai Coconut Curry - yum - shrimp plumb, sweet potato nice accent to the other flavors
Crisp Chicken Breast, though very good, was too large of a serving for the plate and it overshadowed the potatoes (which were very good).
Having lunch on the 6th floor, overlooking Philly, in the Bistro, on campus - what a treat!
I like the room, because is comfortable, lighting was fine. Every time I go I am pleased with the atmosphere and service.
I enjoyed the appetizer, very crunchy and the basil gave a nice finish touch to it. My soup was hot but I would have like a bit hotter. I do not care for desserts so the ice cream was so so to me.
Service was excellent, he was friendly and was right on top of everything. Making sure of the drinks, and he did time very well between dishes.
Completely operated by the Hospitality and Restaurant Management students from Drexel University, I have never been dissappointed with the service or food at the Academic Bistro. $10-$12 three or four course prix fixe lunch on Wednesdays and Thursdays during the term, occasionally a weekly dinner at about $20. Every day is a new culturally authentic theme ranging from Chinese to New York Italian to Middle Eastern to Mexican. Slightly drab dining room with seating for 30. What it lacks in decor it makes up for with jovial atmosphere, kind service, and great food at a more than reasonable price. The bar hight two tops offer a great view of the Drexel campus and University City.
I enjoyed the dinner, the room was pleasant. Very friendly atmosphere. The appetizer had very good flavor. Although the corn bread was not bad, I felt that it was a bit cold and dry. The main entree was very tasty. The dessert was excellent, moist and I could had taken a second piece. Service was excellent, friendly and very prompt to assist us.
The food and service at the Bistro was great! A real value. And very timely service. You get in served and can be done in an hour. It was great! I think you should advertise it more so that more people know about it and take advantage of it. It is too bad that this great food and service is not enjoyed by more people at Drexel and around Phillie. Why would you pay $7-8 on the street for a cheap lunch, when you could get a GREAT meal in a timely fahsion for not much more.
I had a Valentine's Day Prix Fixe here that consisted of mixed greens with a raspberry vinaigrette, stuffed pork loin with sauteed green beans and some kind of delicious potatoes and a whole plate of desserts. It was probably the best meal of my life. The service was fabulous and there was COMPLIMENTARY iced tea and strawberry drink. I was in heaven, as was my best friend. Keep up the good work!
Excellent value for the cost. The soup was superb, and the main course and dessert were quite good. Our server was warm, engaging, concerned for our satisfaction, and extremely polite beyond being highly competent in her duties. I have always had a wonderful experience at the Academic Bistro, and I look forward to many more to come.
The food and service were excellent. However every other table was served either wine or iced tea without the customer asking, except for me and my date. Also, the walls are boring and the low music doesn't help the atmosphere... Everyone in the room was trying to talk under everyone else, it was annoying.
The buffet is a great idea! I am glad the Bistro will be open for the summer! The selection, quality, and price are good! The only thing I have to say "negative" is that the food was not as hot (serving temperature) as I would have liked. The cheesecake was one of the best I have ever had!
The Academic Bistro was a wonderful experience! We were greeted and seated as soon as we arrived by both the hostess and waitress. The food was served at an appropriate pace. The appetizer of tortilla chips with two different kinds of salsa was excellent. Both tasted fresh. The chicken enchilda entree contained moist chicken with just the right amount of Mexican gravy and melted cheese. The Mexican fried dough dessert with chocolate dipping sauce was a superb way to end a meal. The chocolate contained a hint of cinnamon and paired well with the fried dough. It is hard to believe this restaurant is student run as it is as good as a restaurant run by seasoned professionals.
