It was our first full-blown experience at Absinthe to celebrate our 25th anniversary on a Sunday. Our reservation for 3 was early at 6 pm-- but the restaurant and bar were filling rapidly. We were seated right away and ordered cocktails including the signature Sacred Heart and Sanctuary. The drinks took a few minutes to reach us-- one of the few downsides is the bar is busy and drinks do not arrive until 15-20 minutes after being ordered. I liked my Sacred Heart and enjoyed the Absinthe flavor but my wife's order of the Sanctuary was a superior drink. We ordered the hearts of romaine, soft pretzels and french onion soup as appetizers. Each one was excellent with the unusual soft pretzel chunks laying in a shallow pool of garlic butter and accompanied by a melted cheese dip taking it to over the top of luscious decadence. We ordered Brut Rose and a glass of Syrah which were both really good accompaniments to the apps and our entrees including the burger with gorgonzola and bacon, the fettuccine pasta with chanterelles and pecorino cheese and the grilled duck breast on a bed of mashed potatoes and vegetables in a reduction sauce. The fettuccine tasted house made and was very well received by my wife as was the hamburger with pommes frittes enjoyed thoroughly by my daughter. The duck was superb-- tender yet with a crispy crust, flavorful but not fatty and with a reduction sauce that complemented the meat and vegetables without overwhelming the flavor of the duck. Our server was very competent appearing at the right times but not being overly intrusive. The only issue was again a fairly lengthy period between ordering drinks and their receipt. I suggest you order more drinks as your initial beverage gets to the half way point. We also ordered the pistachio bavarois, coffee and salted caramel ice creams for dessert with ruby port. The pistachio dessert was tasty with poached pears and the ruby port accompanying the dessert was top notch. Great dinner!

We had a lovely dinner here before the symphony. The service was excellent and the food was very good. We were seated a very small table, so it was a bit cramped, but overall I would recommend this restaurant and will probably go again!

This is one of our favorite restaurants in SF. Probably the best burger in the Bay Area. Our waiter Patrick made it even better with his attentive service and good advice. Salads and mussels also excellent as is the Very French chicken dish...coq au vin.

I love this restaurant. Have been coming here for many years. Always great food, attentive service, cozy Parisian ambience. We were there in. Wednesday night prior to going g to SF Jazz. Was perfect early dinner and the main room was buzzy but quiet so we could have a conversation. But as we were about to leave a group of 3 sat next to us and proceed to talk loudly to each other using a lot of profanity. Seriously who does that? People need to get some manners.

Started with the clams and mussels. It was excellent especially the broth. Coq au Vin did not disappoint. My husband enjoyed his duck breast with orange glaze.
Service was rather slow. Staff is friendly.

Great food and service but noise level when the restaurant filled up made conversation a bit challenging. Coq au vin was perfect on a rainy night with a beautiful presentation.

We had a great meal here on a date night prior to seeing a performance at the War Memorial Theatre. Very easy walking to the main Show Venues. I had the Cod and my wife had an awesome Butternut Squash Pasta Dish.....I am coming back to have it for myself next time. They have a Huge Wine List....everything from wine by the glass to a $20k bottle! We did however bring our own wine this trip since it was our first time at the restaurant and the corkage fee is $30 per bottle, max of 2 bottles. We started with a 5 variety Cheese Plate, very nice....you can also get one that has 3 varieties if you want something smaller. We split a great Greens Salad and we ended our meal with a unique desert (can't remember the name) but it was good. Definitely recommend this restaurant.

Absolutely fantastic restaurant! The entree, main course, and dessert were all beyond the ordinary. We chose the insatiable garlic pretzels as our entree, the amazing hamburgers and fries as our main course, and the delicious mandarin sorbet as our dessert. Concerning the drinks, it is wise to pick at least one of the many different variations of absinthe incorporated cocktails.

Nonexistent service . I suppose that's better than overly attentive, nevertheless the restaurant was half empty and the wait between courses was inexplicably lengthy to the point of annoying. The deflated ambiance (no food on the table, few people at other tables) felt a bit depressing that no amount of actual Absinthe could possibly remedy.
Still... very solid, satisfying food when it did finally arrive.

So, the restaurant is nice and staff is friendly but the value is not there and it is not as close to Orpheum theatre as noted. Especially with the decline in the overall San Francisco experience, it is my opinion that I will seek a smaller venue or city to enjoy a play or performance. San Francisco is headed for a catastrophe and the liberal agenda will win their social experiment battle but lose the war.

I have been going to Absinthe for 30+ Years, a very favorite place in my heart. The service on this occasion was difficult, perhaps it was New Year’s Day and things were off. This won’t stop me from going back, just a little disappointed on the anticipated experience.

Service was good, had to ask for the bread to be warmed but the food was amazing. Had the ceviche as an appetizer and the ribeye for main entree. Ceviche was chilled, fresh, and crisp the way good seafood crudo should be. The steak was medium rare and perfect, the finish was silky and buttery with a one of kind the flavor, completely satisfied. Highly recommend both the ceviche and ribeye, I'll be back to try more of the menu.

My husband and I have been going to Absinthe since it opened 20 years ago,it is one of our favorites. The menu has many good choices, we are always given our favorite table and the bar easily makes our special cocktails.
On this occasion, things were different. We had a warm greeting and our favorite table but there was major difficulty in making our cocktails, it was as if it was the bartender's first day. Mine had to be made twice when it was suggested by our waiter I should choose something else.I did and the substitute was mediocre. My husband was not impressed with his drink but did not want to bother changing.
Our waiter made us very uncomfortable ,and at not time, offered us any compensation ,such as free dessert or not paying for my drink. He seemed to want to argue with us, not professional at all.
We shall return, absolutely, we are not going to give up on such a long time favorite.

Absinthe is great for a Davies Symphony pre theatre date night. The food is amazing especially the burger, the caviar canapes, and the steak tartare. The service can get a tad slow when busy; however, the servers do ask if you have any time constraints and so they make sure to act accordingly. I would definitely recommend coming here because of its walking distance from the symphony (about a block or two), its short walk from BART (about 10-15mins), and because of the food (didn't have time for dessert but will want to come back again and try something new including dessert)!
