Absinthe is a favorite for before opera dining. It opens early enough to allow you to get to a 7:30 curtain, the traditional French menu is always well prepared. Highly recommend the pot de crime.

I was pleasantly surprised by the good quality vs. relatively inexpensive pricing. It was a bit noisy but overall a nice dinning environment. Parking was a bit tricky so would recommend the $15 valet parking.

Great food and attentive waitstaff in an attractive, informal setting. Perfect spot for dinner before an evening at the SF Opera or Symphony.

The service was excellent. The host was friendly and informative and made us feel welcome. The drinks were unique and tasty. We wanted to go to the pre-opera talk which made us a little rushed, but we were able to to do this without feeling as if we rushed our meal. An excellent experience.

We had 7:45 reservations and arrived a little early, but we're seated right away at a lovely window table. We purchased a nice bottle of wine at the wine shop next door, and they reduced the normally $30 corkage fee to $15. There were four of us, and to a one we all loved our meals. So nice they offer a small bowl,of French Onion Soup because then you are not to full to also, order an entree. Two got,the Coq au Vin, one the Spanish Oxtopus, and I got the potato-crusted salmon. Everything so delicious, well-prepared. Service staff were attentive but not intrusive. This is our 4th time at Absinthe, and our friends' first. They loved it and were quite impressed, and they know their way around a kitchen!

Indifferent waiter, duck was tough, coq au vin very little chicken, service slow, citrus salad was good. Valet warned they cannot guarantee parking after dinner for SF Symphony !! Very shocked and disappointed in overall experience. Won’t hurry back!

The raclette was amazing ! I loved the herbs in it. Also, I think that was the best french onion soup I've had yet. The booth we sat in was very comfortable and cozy - good for sharing plates.

Terrible experience — poorly seated (lied to about availability of another table), waited 25 minutes for menus, I another 20 for drink orders, another 15 for drinks, etc. Had put in a note / was celebrating my mother’s birthday (she was in from across the country) and was shocked and disappointed by the lack of attentiveness, quality of service, insignificance of food, and overall experience (e.g., the need to flag down the woman every time we needed a refill on water).

I’ve been to Absinthe countless times (north of 20) but without an explanation, likely will not return.

Last minute our party of three became a party of seven. Absinthe was accommodating in finding a table for us. We got seated by the window and our table was round which was excellent so we could all talk to each other. Maybe this happened because it was a Tuesday night but the point is the food was good, drinks were flowing, and the service was great!

This place has been there for many years now and seems tired and faded. It definitely needs rejuvenation, particularly in the food and menu. The desserts are especially dreary.

The food was awesome! Pot du Creme was to die for. Coq au vin has amazing favors.
Lighting was a bit odd, the lights turned off at one point and kept adjusting themselves, and the heat was on high, very uncomfortable.

Always a Hayes Valley classic. We went right before going to the theater, and our server asked us right off the bat when our showtime was so she could get the order in quick and get us on our way on time.

Beautiful restaurant. Street parking was hard to find so we used the valet service for $15 which gets added to your dinner bill. It was our first time at Absinthe, and we were pretty excited about the absinthe cocktails and dinner menu. Our cocktails were strong and tasty. Our fave things on the menu were the French onion soup, the pork belly appetizer, and the coq au vin (braised chicken) for $29. Loved the food and the atmosphere. Their service was great too. We had 8pm reservations but got there at 7:30, and we were seated right away by the friendly hostess. The waiter was very helpful. We didn’t have much room for dessert so we ordered one scoop of pear sorbet for $3. For valet, two drinks, dinner, a little dessert, and a big tip... $150. Great value. The food was excellent. Fun, friendly, cozy, and romantic.

The food was not bad, but the rude hostess and the extremely slow service made for an unenjoyable experience. One hour and forty minutes should be more than enough time for a leisurely meal, but here, we barely had time for a rushed two course meal. I have eaten in this restaurant many times in the past, but I will not be returning.

Have come for cocktails before and really liked it. Their bartenders are outstanding. Had dinner here for the first time and had a nice meal with good service. We both had their burger (excellent) and their onion soup (excellent). Will definitely go back.

1) We a bit disappointed with their menu.
The reason we picked up this restaurant was, we wanted to have "Seared Foie Gras"
shown in their menu by web site(home page). However, it was replaced to "Pork Belly"
in their actual menu there.
2) We also a bit disappointed with their service of serving first order of drinks.
Before the drinks came to the table, a couple of hors d'oeuvres were served on the table.

The brasserie is a couple of blocks from Davies Symphony Hall. It was a perfect location for an early solo dinner after a Sunday matinee concert. The staff was attentive and the food was superb; my dining experience was a pleasure. The cauliflower soup was delicate and full of flavors. The grilled octopus on its bed of black squid-ink risotto was a treat. The Absinthe is a small restaurant, but did not feel crowded, although it was a full house.

Have been to Absinthe about 4 times on Sundays before going to see a play. The food is exceptional and typically different in a good way. This past Sunday a friend and I shared the French toast stuffed with ricotta with rum soaked banana's and the Heirloom tomato grilled cheese sandwich with macadamia pesto. Both were delicious. My friend is vegetarian and there were plenty of options for her to choose. The service has always been excellent. Love the atmosphere and it is just a comfortable place to be with friends and family.

the main strength of Absinthe is location -- it is one block from the symphony, opera & ballet. The food is good but no bargain -- the two of us had four appetizers, a glass of wine, a coffee and a shared desert with tax and tip the was $100. Everything was better than "just ok" but nothing outstanding. We will return.
