A Tavola is an Italian restaurant and bistro located in Winchester, Mass. "A tavola" literally translates to "at the table," an expression that was meant to call everyone to gather around and enjoy a good meal, as well as each other's company. A Tavola aims to be the embodiment of this sentiment, being a place where guests can come and enjoy delicious, authentic Italian cuisine while feeling as if they are part of the family.
A Tavola has plenty of full dinners for those who want a full, hearty meal. However, the specialty of the house are piattini, small plates that are meant to be passed and shared. First-time guests should each order one or two, then pass them around the table so everyone gets a taste. Popular ones include Maple Brook Farm burrata, marinated olives and duck breast prosciutto with grated foie gras.
Food was excellent, service was very friendly and helpful. Ambience was cozy, and romantic. We will be back
Unique quaintness . Very much like a small intimate European restaurant
I was here last month and often over the winter. The place is nice and close to home when weather or traffic is really bad. The restaurant is small and cute with these old looking tables. The menu is very limiting as there are only about a half dozen items on it. However, the cooks have been very accommodating swapping sides for me and my gluten and dairy free guest. Also, they have gluten free pasta! The cost can be a bit on the higher end, but not much more than most restaurants in this category. The big draw back is the limited menu and those hard seats. I think they could use some seat pads.
Recommended highly by Frances of the Griffin Museum, A Tavola provided a small and unusual menu of delicious food and Italian wines. Halibut, glazed grilled steak, mixed green salad and EVOO cake with basil frozen yogurt for dessert. I'll go back as soon as possible!
Excellent food in the rustic trattoria style, small and cosy environment, kitchen is right there "behind the bar" so you can see its all cooked fresh from scratch. Not cheap, but you get definitely what you pay for. Perfect for that special birthday or anniversary.
This was our second time visiting Tavola, the appetizers were delicious, the fish special was a bit overcooked but well seasoned. Pasta dish was also quite tasty but not spectacular. For $150 for two, somehow the whole experience left us feeling a little underwhelmed. Limited menu choices.
I have been to A Tavola on many occasions, and each time am so pleased with the overall dining experience. The menu is filled with delicious pastas, and meat and fish entrees filled with flavor and expertly prepared by the chef and his team. Ingredients are farm fresh and bursting with goodness. Always a memorable meal.
We were celebrating a birthday and they were very nice to us. They brought us sparkling wine and dessert with a candle. Food was delicious and service was great. It was a perfect evening. We'll be back. Thank you, A Tavola!
We had a Dine Out Boston menu. Liked the idea of picking 3 courses off the menu versus limited choices. The "Pig Roast Entree" was excellent. Mangale Pasta not so much. Walnuts and Goat Cheese ingredients in a heavy pesto pasta basically missing. First course, grilled octupus and mixed green salad very good. Dessert very good. Overall a good value. Excellent service and nice table.
We ordered mostly specials. The charred octopus special stood out because the charred outside was so deep and flavorful, yet the inside remained moist.
walked into this restaurant at 5:30 PM with a reservation and there was no hostess to seat us for a bout 5 to 7 minutes. The tables are plain hardwood about 2' x 3' wide. The chairs are totally wood, and particularly hard and uncomfortable. On the blackboard the specials of the day were listed, and we could not see to read them from our table, even though we have 20/20 vision. There was one waitress on staff who seemed experienced and the second who seem incompetent. With that said after 20 minutes and no one taking our order, we decided to walk out before being further tortured.
To us it seems they have a very limited menu, which is overpriced, especially considering the hard chairs and mini tables, and lack of atmosphere. We do live in Winchester so it would be nice to have another neighborhood restaurant that we enjoy. I am afraid it is not this one! Maybe the food is great but I don't think we will ever know.
We decided to give A Tavola a try since we live in the neighborhood; we were quite disappointed. We ordered the pasta with clams and an appetizer portion of a pasta dish with pesto. Nearly all of the clams were gritty and this seemed amateurish for such a well established owner/chef. Further, my appetizer portion of the Mafaldi pasta was a good portion, however, it was drowned in the pesto and contained only a dime sized dollop of goat cheese and approximately 1 walnut. We won't be back.
The 4 of us came here last night and we had an excellent time. It was the first time for the couple we brought with us and they were truly impressed. We shared a couple of apps to start and they were delicious: oysters & grilled squid. For entrees, every dish was just as perfect: Rigatoni Bolognese, rabbit special w/ pancetta, and my favorite Bucatini! Their in-house pastas are one of the best in the burbs! We also had a couple of bottles of red wine, both were Montepulciano, one had a lighter note than the other, and both bottles were equally really good. Our waitress was very professional, friendly, and knowledgeable about the dinner menu, as well as the wine menu. Will certainly come back!
My second time at A Tavola confirmed that this is a rare gem. The menu is totally unique, the cooking is creative without being pretentious or fussy and the presentation is exquisite, a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. The Raddichio Treviso salad with grilled peach was heavenly and the plum tart with hops syrup and goat cheese gelato was beyond heavenly - off the charts! The wine suggestions were perfect. I love the rustic bistro decor, and the lively atmosphere that indicated people were enjoying themselves. Obviously this has become a favorite restaurant of mine!
Exceptional food and service. Been many times and never have they disappointed.
This is my 3rd dining experience here. Just because pasta is homemade doesn't mean it's great. The rigatoni was not only overpriced but it was cooked more than al dente "to the bite". Simply put the pasta was hard and unpalatable. The bolognese sauce was ok/fair. The chicken was good. The waitress had a bland personality to match the taste of the food. However, I still tipped her well. We will not return.
The intimacy and the charm of A Tavola is unmatched by any other restaurant in the area. The food is farm to table and the menu appears ti be seasonally sourced to provide food that is not only fresh but has a small footprint. I would say my favorite part of the meal was the duck prosciutto with shaved foie gras. It was so delicate but rich in flavor. The service is great, with servers who are attentive to their guests. Definitely somewhere I will keep going to over and over as the years go by.
I have been to A Tavola previously, but it had been awhile. And it was just as delicious. I never order pork - ever - but I did and it was such a unique preparation....all smokey flavored under a glass dome - outstanding! The duck appetizer was done perfectly. I look forward to the next visit.
Took this recommendation from a friend and was it disappointed! The tables were a little tight and close together but not a problem, once you say down.
Good friendly service and food was delicious .
I don't normally write restaurant reviews, but my wife and I enjoyed our dinner at A Tavola enough that I've already recommended it to a few of my friends. Prices were reasonable. Quality was good. Locally sourced food (and some grown out back behind the restaurant, apparently.) I could see myself dining there on a fairly regular basis!
This was our first visit and we were not disappointed! We'd requested thru our Open Table res if we could come a bit earlier than their 5:30 opening, as we were attending a local concert and wanted to have enough time to enjoy this venue. We received a personal call to assure us our 5PM request could be met. The wine offerings were plentiful and the "glass and a half" portions were appreciated. One can also request a smaller serving too. I had the savory arugula salad with warm figs which was excellent. Several in our group selected the Swordfish special with couscous and pesto. The portions were not large but the right size for us. Served hot, moist and flavorful, and totally delicious. Our server was present just the right amount of time and seemed to know exactly when to approach the table and not hover. We enjoyed our 1 1/2 hours in this special restaurant and will definitely return and share the experience with friends.
A small gem of a restaurant with delicious dishes, A Tavola is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxed dinner for two in a casual, candlelit and elegant atmosphere. The servers are attentive and knowledgeable. The menu featured four main dishes. We enjoyed the salmon and chicken. With on street parking easy to find, it's always a pleasure to dine here.
This was our first visit to A Tavola and it was a great experience. The staff was very pleasant, knowledgeable and patient with all our questions. The food was delicious and fresh. We were pleasantly surprised at what a great place it was for our kids too. We have a child with peanut allergies and our server was very helpful. It is a small space but never once did I feel confined. The staff had an amazing rhythm that made you forget the size of the room and just relax and enjoy. We will be back.
On our first visit to A Tavola, our waitress spilled a glass of red wine on my wife, ruining her outfit as anyone should know with red wine. The restaurant offered to comp the wine and pay for dry cleaning which shows they have no idea what red wine does to clothing. No management person bothered to come and see what could be done so I assume that they were not really interested in our return business. They food was actually quite good and the menu was fairly short so that the kitchen was not burdened too much. The pace of the meal was fine. We will not be returning.
The food was so good, but after a while those wooden chairs just left me in agony. How about some little pads to help make guests more comfortable. The meal cost us $100 for two dinners and one was gluten-free pasta. Mom had a glass of wine.
Love this place. Brought an out of town guest who was wowed by the food (& he has dined all over the world). Also brought the kids for the 1st time- so impressed with the kids menu. One of my favorites, probably of all time :) Thanks, Vittorio
Between the two of us, we split the special appetizer (morel mushroom polenta and a soft shell crab with fava beans - both were excellent. We tend to eat too fast and as a consequence, the food is brought to us at the same pace. The pace of the meal was relaxed and not rushed. We will definitely be back.
While we have been to A Tavola many times before, we may not return again. The food was good, but the service was very slow and the server was very poorly trained. The fixed price menu limits choices and prep time, so the slow service was hard to understand. Needing to tell the server that we would like to order drinks, ask for bread and then needing to ask for drinks again while we cooled our heels for over an hour is not really acceptable. Sorry.
It was a genuine Italian resturant, similar to what you find in Italy. It had all the courses but each course is individually priced. The location is a small storefront on Winchester ' s main street.
A Tavola is a great spot, had the bolognese and LOVED it. I'd highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for a nice nice in Winchester.
An amazingly diverse a menu!
The app won't let me copy & paste my review for this restaurant which you can read in its entirety on TripAdvidor - User BuyfromPaul and Yelp - User Paul M
Nice hidden spot, great small plates for sharing and all 3 pasta entrees were terrific!
Coming back from a ski trip in Vermont, we stayed for a night with some friends and happened on A Tavola. The evening turned out great for a tired crew. Best part was a nice selection of small plate selections. I had a nice small plate with house made sausage with a mushroom ragout on a bed of creamy polenta. Really nice, and paired with a salad, it was just enough for me. My husband had the snapper special and our teenage son enjoyed the pasta bolegnese. We couldn't resist trying the fresh Tuscan Donuts served with vanilla cream and strawberries. Outsdanding. Good bread with dipping oil and very nice, attentive servers as well. The place is small, with a few seats at the bar that looks straight into the small, busy kitchen. The decor is basic and a bit industrial but you feel right at home. We would definitely return if in Winchester again.
We went for Easter brunch and the food was excellent! I didn't walk out feeling I was going to keel over from having eaten heavy foods. This spot captures the lighter side of Italian cuisine and introduces a fresh take on locally-sourced ingredients. Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice quiet, out-of-the-way spot not to be missed!
Small-ish place in 'downtown' Winchester. Modest variety on menu but everyone should be able to find something. All that we had was great. Open kitchen lends very personable atmosphere to place. We had a great time
Our party of four arrived at 7:15 pm, were warmly welcomed and seated promptly. We all ordered insalata misto and were impressed with the freshness of the greens and the lightness and flavor of the olive oil/lemon dressing. The salt had been added to the olive oil, so the level of seasoning was perfect. Entrees ordered at our table included the porchetta, which was also well seasoned and a superb combination of flavors. It was moist, tender and full of flavor. The vegetables and the sauce were delicious. Even though the portion was generous, my husband managed to confirm his status as a member of the "Clean Plate Club." My friend and I ordered the black sea bass with spring vegetables, The broth was aromatic and flavorful, and the sea bass moist and delicious. The portion was generous. My friend's husband, a pasta lover, had a pasta dish with meat sauce, which smelled divine and was thoroughly enjoyed. Next time (and there will be a next time in the near future), we'll sit at the bar so we can watch the chef in action and hopefully pick up some culinary tricks to add to our repertoire!
Finally! We moved to Winchester from the city about 18 months ago and had given up on finding that neighborhood go-to restaurant for excellent food and ambiance. But then we happened to try A Tavola. Wow! Excellent good and service and ambiance. We are going back again tonight and will be regulars!
Calamari is delicious, although it was served before our wine or bread arrived, which was odd - we would have preferred to sit with our wine and bread a few moments before the app arrived. The salmon dishes were lovely, the wine recommendation was very good. I definitely preferred the black pepper pappardelle to the chocolate pappardelle on the current menu. Meyer lemon tart was perfect for Pi day!
If you go get the calamari. All the food was on point, but I ordered the calamari expecting the standard fried aioli/red sauce that you typically get and was pleasantly surprised. It was grilled with olives and marinara. Super tender and smokey from the grill. Price was very reasonable also.
Excellent service, excellent food, excellent chef!
