To ensure the freshest food at a tavola, fresh fruits and vegetables are selected from a local organic farmer, meats and seafood are personally selected by Chef Dan from local markets.
This was our second time at A Tavola and it was better than the last. We got a special-steak and gnocchi and it was made perfectly. Our friends got two Lara dishes and we’re blown away. Can’t wait to go back!
Always pleasant here! Food is good, but selection seemed a bit pared-down this time. Great, attentive service and food make the difference. Nice to be able to have a special place with this level of care allowed at pricing that isn’t excessive! Glad it’s close and convenient! Quaint atmosphere. Quiet enough to have conversations and enjoy the meal overall.
This was one of the best meals I’ve ever had! This is truly a hidden gem! It was so hidden when my Uber driver dropped me off I wasn’t sure I was at the right place. But when I walked into the two story brick house, I was immediately met with the amazing smells of an Italian kitchen! The gnocchi was fresh and melted in my mouth! The wait staff was attentive and the service was fantastic and I felt like I was eating at someone’s home. They make their own wine and it was delicious! I bought a bottle to take home. I will definitely be back.

This was a long-time favorite that we hadn’t been to in a while. We went with another couple and were all disappointed. Service was friendly but very poorly timed. The appetizer/first courses came out quickly. The gnocchi was good; the others just OK. Then we had a very long wait for our main courses. The waitress finally came by to say they were plating our food. 20 minutes later she finally brought our dishes. We asked if they had been plated 20 minutes earlier but left on the counter all that time. She said no, they were freshly served. She said the kitchen told her ours were next up but apparently not. She apologized for the very long wait and offered to comp drinks. Two of our group had the whitefish. They both thought it was OK but not special. And two of us had the braised chicken. It was tasty but quite salty. The waitress then comped a dessert and a serious issue arose. Although she apologized, no one from the kitchen or management came out to talk to us or apologize. (The issue was probably a fluke so we won’t go into detail; we mention it because we thought there was a very feeble response to a serious problem, which does not reflect at all well on the restaurant.) In all, a very disappointing experience. Neither we nor our friends would return.
I picked a tavola for a dinner with my mom while she was in town. While the ambience is more suited to a date, we enjoyed every dish we ordered as well as our wine selections. We split the $60 prix fixe menu and they didn’t charge us anything additional, which was a pleasant surprise! And our waitress even brought us each a free glass of Prosecco to end our meal. I’ll be back!
Overall, good food, good experience, we would come back!
This is a very unique restaurant with delicious well prepared food. The atmosphere is very low key elegant
and the noise level wonderful for an enjoyable dinner. There was music but it was very low and everyone
The moist quaint, cozy and personal spot. It’s set in a house like building with the cutest back patio. The service is outstanding, they are beyond kind and you’re never left waiting long for anything. The food is delicious and the gnocchi was the best we’ve ever had, a must get!
There for a small party of about 14people. Food fantastic service marvelous.

Hadn't been to this place in many years. It is still the same charming, intimate and nicely lit [and genuinely QUIET] roomit's always been. Maybe the kitchen was having an off night, but we were surprised at how many things went wrong. We arrived maybe 5 minutes past our reservation time, but our table wasn't ready and there's really no place comfortable to wait, which we did of almost 20 minutes. Our server, while congenial, didn't seem to have it together. We all ordered salad courses and entrees, and then asked for a couple of orders of gnocchi for the whole table. When they brought the entrees, she brought one of us the wrong thing [scallops instead of trout]. She apologized profusely and said the kitchen would make the trout for us, and while she was gone we realized we had never gotten the gnocchi. So she apologized again and even though we told her to forget about it, she brought the gnocchi after most of us had finished our entrees - which not all of us loved, BTW. To its credit, the house comped our beverages and didn't charge us for the gnocchi, but we would have been happy to pay full price for better service and food. I can't say at this point I would re-visit.
Had been a year since we came back but still an excellent restaurant with excelling service and customer attention. Was a joy and we will be back some time in 2020.
Delicious Red Snapper and Gnocchi. Great service and charming back patio area
A disappointing visit. Ordered "Fish of the day" (snapper) and "Steak Florentine" for two, a special. Fish came breaded, with potatoes and a large head of broccoli. Fish itself we mediocre and needed some salt, potatoes were grey inside (were they sitting in the fridge after being boiled?), the size of the broccoli was grotesque. The steak was very fatty and not trimmed at all. We had to struggle with it on our plates. The quality of the beef wasn't great, so it's not clear why the chef would make a "special" of it. It was cooked properly, though. The steak came with a side plate of gnocchi, which were dry, not “pillow-soft” as the restaurant like to advertise them. The sage butter looked like an afterthought. Our server was very nice but that didn't save the dinner. A Tavola has a small, overpriced wine list and no beer. Would not recommend this restaurant.

My fiancee and I went for dinner on a Friday at 6:45 and were seated immediately - the service was excellent throughout the night. I should preface the rest of this review by saying that I rarely write reviews, and I almost never complain about food. That said, this was a pretty rough meal.
We both ordered from the prix fixe menu - the lettuce in my salad was wilted, my fiancee's pasta was on the wrong side of "al dente", and the short rib risotto was so bad that I choked down three bites before I sent it back because it tasted like soap. They brought me the whitefish as a replacement. It was passable, although pretty bony.
The place has a great reputation, so maybe we just caught it on an off night, but the bill was $235 with tip for a really unimpressive meal and a $56 bottle of wine that should have cost $30 at most. To top it off, both my fiancee and I ended up spending the rest of our Friday night on the couch and alternating trips to the bathroom. A Tavola didn't sit well at all :/ can't recommend it to anyone.
Loved the flavor and variety of food. The atmosphere in the outdoor patio is comfortable and makes you feel welcome, like a chef is cooking for you at home!

Ambiance was lovely but the food was mediocre. My risotto tasted metallic like the broth was stored in a can. Gnocchi was bland. We shared 2 different salads to start and they were almost identical. Wouldn’t go back.

A favorite for summer time - Amazing setting and patio, super friendly and professional service. The food is usually very good - a small menu done well - but it can be a bit inconsistent. Great if you are in neighborhood, and worth searching out when weather is nice.
I love how this place is hidden away. I had actually forgotten it was there until I walked past the sandwich board sign. Made a reservation to come back and was not disappointed. The food was excellent and the wait staff was very attentive and friendly. They definitely went above and beyond and made the experience just as memorable as the first time I went years ago. This place is doing a lot of things right, I would highly recommend it.
Something has changed at a tavola. The once lovely back patio was barren and more importantly the food was bad. The fish on the menu was unavailable, the chicken was plain and tepid, the once fabulous gnocchi was leaden and the salads were overdressed and limp. It felt like everything was leftovers. It was embarrassing to have taken guests there and was a waste of $$.

Pasta tasted like it had been cooked ahead of time, was mushy, and did not taste fresh. Gnocchi was tough. Fish was catfish (What Italian restaurant serves catfish as their only fish?), ribs were mediocre.
Very disappointing- not sure if new ownership or not, but had been very excited to come back & brought friends, but won’t be back again anytime soon unless the quality improves.
Maybe just a bad night, we have had a lot of good ones here, but too many things were disappointing, even for one bad night.

Have you ever gone to a restaurant for the second time because the first experience far exceeded your expectations only to be completely let down. The signature dish, steak and gnocchi was not available, the fish of the day was not available. Please call ahead if you are expecting the full menu.
The restaurant is located in a very charming building and has a beautiful romantic ambiance. The meal I had was very good but I would not order it again not that it was bad but that it was too much for me. The Grilled Marinated Portobello mushroom appetizer could have easily been my entree. It was as delicious as any steak I have ever eaten. I upgraded the gnocchi to entree portion which I should not have because it was very rich. The Torta Di Limon was to die for! The crust was perfect. It was crisp yet melted as you chewed and the lemon cream was beautiful.
The patio is embarrassing. The weeds are overgrown so much so that having a dress or skirt you can feel them while sitting at the table. There are a number of dead plants in pots and weeds growing in the planters. In addition, half the outdoor lights were not lit up as well as a large piece of lattice was missing on the west side of the patio . Come on!!! You have a patio in the city that I would not come back too. We will not be back. We were extremely disappointed.
Consistently superb experience places a tavola at the top of my list of favorite US dining experiences.
First and foremost I must say the service was fantastic.
Our server, Leslie, was excellent and she was assisted by another server who made sure our waters were always filled and places cleared.
The martinis were great! The mushroom and gnocchi appetizers were to die for.
My husband had the beef short rib...very good.
I had the whitefish special that was wonderful.
Leslie surprised us with a complimentary piece of flourless chocolate cake with almonds. A perfect ending to a wonderful evening.
Great food! Great patio dining and ambiance! The patio experience was exactly what we were hoping for in a quiet post-meeting day for the group of 7 of us. If we had had to dine inside, I think the experience would not have been as suitable, because the interior was very dark.
A new friend named Paul recommended A Tavola to us as we visited Chicago for the weekend. We were simply amazed as each course provided delicious and fresh tastes. Our server, Michelle, was the best.

Was just looking for a place to grab dinner before a late-night concert at The Empty Bottle and found A Tavola - and what a find it was. It is a tiny restaurant with a small but delicious menu. The prix fixe 4 course meal was perfect for us all. Allowed us to get to try a bit of everything (don’t miss their dessert! - with 5 of us we were able to get all 4 options to share). The service/pace was like a European restaurant which we love rather than being rushed and we had the time so it made for a great start to the evening. We will definitely be back.
