A la Maison Bistro Ratings and Reviews
This was my third visit to the restaurant and it will be my last. The service was TERRIBLE. We made a reservation. We were seated and offered water and some bread. It took about 10 minutes for our server to arrive and she was very rushed to tell us the specials. Her answers to our questions were curt and impatient. It then took about another 15 minutes or so for her to return for our order which she rushed us through. Meanwhile the table right next to us had their server come to the table 5 or 6 times while we waited. Granted It was busy in the restaurant with three large tables and several other 2 and 4 tops. It appears there was only 2 servers and the bus man on water and bread duty. After being there for an hour without any of our appetizers being delivered we decided to leave. Previous to this visit we had a so so experience and one good experience. The food in the past has been good but I had none this time to comment on except for the bread which was too hard (stale). As we left we heard other people complaining about the service and long wait time. One table had asked to see a manager and after an hour no one came to talk to them. The place is obviously poorly managed and the combination of too few servers and a slow kitchen spelled disaster. We had to go to a different place to eat. Very disappointed!!!
How the mighty have fallen. This used to be a wonderful place for lunch or dinner. I cannot speak about dinner, but the last 2 out of 3 attempts to have lunch were disastrous. There is only one server for the entire restaurant. She was trying to serve a half dozen or more tables. Our food came out more than forty-five minutes late, and there was one order never received. She was understandably harried, and not in a friendly mood (nor would I have been). In addition, there was NOBODY at the front. That's right - - just the server, whoever was in the kitchen, and the customers. My wife had to telephone the restaurant with an important message for my daughter, and she was greeted with an answering machine that itself was none too friendly.
On top of that, the last time we came, there was a note on the door indicating there was some sort of kitchen emergency and the place was closed.
Love this Main Line BYO. You actually feel like you are dining in a French Bistrot. Food is very good. Highly recommend the Cassoulet, Steak Frites, Chicken Pot Pie. Moules as an appetizer are offered three ways and they were delicious and came with frites. Great French bread too. It is a bit pricey but well worth it. Staff was very friendly.
Well, this restaurant had been one of our favorites on the Main Line at which my friends and I (and on weekends, our husbands too) have spent thousands of dollars on meals over the years , but we had a terrible experience there this week. When we arrived my two friends and I were forewarned that they were short staffed and it would take longer. We're all easygoing, so waiting a little was not a problem. BUT we arrived at 6:30, ordered by 6:50, received our appetizers around 7:45 and our main meal by around 8:40. We asked multiple times, our waitress was completely frazzled (understandlably, it was NOT her fault), and the chef apparently MIA. To make matters worse, the Shrimp Provencale at $16 (first time ordering this) was two med-large shrimp with a single piece of a roasted tomato. Insane!
The steak was done as asked, but the sauce atop had dried up, the fries cold, and the accompanying greens wilted and dried up. My friends meals had clearly been sitting (or something) as well. I called yesterday to speak with the manager and he has not returned my call. Very disappointing, as it will be a while before I, my friends (as well as with our husbands in tow) return to the restaurant unless there is A VERY good reason explained to us by the manager or owner? I look forward to the call, I left my phone number with the person I spoke with yesterday.
We love this place, and have been many times in the past. Tonight’s food was equally good, and service was wonderful! The only distractor was - we think - that the restaurant’s exhaust fan for the kitchen must have died - our eyes were watering during dinner, and all our clothes are destined tomorrow for the cleaners... we’ll be back - though we may wait till they fix the fan 🙂
I made my reservation knowing my dear and talented friends, Phyllis Chapell, Dave Posmontier, and Kevin McConnell were playing that evening. I'd had lunch here on two other occasions and knew the food would be impeccable. My date and I were delighted to have met the proprietor, Ted Miller. In fact we had all been dancing to the wonderful music that evening. I was even invited to sing with the band! The evening will be among our happiest memories.
This was first time in years since we've been to a la Maison and were a bit disappointed. Service was good, not great; food was good; not great. We ordered the 5 pate plate for starters; they delivered 3. They took it away and brought 5, but no apologies. The sliver of 5 pates was just enough for the 4 of us to taste each. All good but overpriced for quantity at $24. The cassoulet was delicious and generous serving. The moules tasted fine, but many were so small it wasn't worth getting them out! The waitress spilled half of my fries when putting the plate down; said she was going to get me another order, but that never arrived. Left a lot on the floor without cleaning it up! The atmosphere is definitely reminiscent of a classic bistro. It was bustling but no too loud. So overall, ok, not great value or service. With so few french restaurants in the area, would be willing to go back and try some other entrees.
The food was fantastic! Every morsel melted in your mouth. The crab casserole was delicious as was the halibut and the duck. The food is as good here as any place I know. I have been ther now twice in two weeks. They had live music on Tuesday which was very nice. I would r commend this restaurant to people who like great food.
We have dined there several times. The food is consistently delicious. The steak used in the steak frites is fabulous. It has never disappointed me!
Ted Miller is to be congratulated for maintaining these high standards of service and quality.
It is a BYOB which is always appreciated.
My one disappointment is merely a personal issue. I am allergic to mustard and all of their salad dressings contain it. A basic vinegar and oil sans mustard would be appreciated.
Possibly our 5th meal at this restaurant and we continue to be pleasantly surprised. First time listening to a wonderful husband/wife duo perform some wonderfully nostalgic french music. My steak frites were perfectly executed as was the veal special that night. Be sure to try the coconut ice cream when available. Service was sublime. Many thanks for another great evening.
It was quite full, both in the parking lot and inside of the restaurant. Surprised to find so many elderly couples and French-speaking groups enjoying the Saturday evening dinner. I would have guessed every 3 out of 4 guests had silver hair.
Our food tasted like from a northern French coastal comfort food. It was very good, but my wife's dish had little too much sand so she had to exchange it.
Overall, I liked it a lot and will be back again.
This restaurant is indeed an Ardmore gem. The food and ambiance are wonderful. The decor is lovely- French country. We love to go on Wednesday to listen to the jazz music, which is excellent. The BYOB aspect is also perfect for us. It's quite romantic and a perfect date night restaurant.
We've been to Ardmore's A La Maison Bistro twice before, though it's been a number of years since we had returned, not for any particular reason , just hadn't gotten around to retuning. We were delighted with everything, and being a BYOB it makes it that much more special and enjoyable. It was a Friday Night "date night" for my wife and I. There was a warm romantic glow about the place with a fantastic, mellow jazz band playing so tastefully with a wonderful female vocalist, this was an unexpected surprise. Of course the food was so terrific. Each course as impressive and carefully crafted as the next completely making this so very enjoyable, wonderfully seasoned, simply delicious. In all a very lovely evening that we will remember fondly for some time to come. We highly recommend it!
