a Cena Ristorante Ratings and Reviews
The ambiance is very nice. While we did not have pasta, perhaps that was an error as the meal I had was only partly good. The fish was well prepared and tasty, but the vegetables were not. The fennel salad was 30% shaved fennel and the rest arugula. A weak attempt at a salad that should enliven fennel with good olive oil and a touch of salt. Not a good presentation of both for $42.00.
After the tearful closing of Iorio on Hawthorne where for many years we celebrated family milestones, we began the search for a new place to hang our birthday hats. We found A Cena in Sellwood and after a few date nights and a New Year's Eve celebration we feel that we have finally found our new go-to with family and friends. Thus when we ushered in 2018 at A Cena, which in Italian is the call "to dinner", we felt that we had begun a new tradition of celebrations. The food is daring and delicious and it is served in an atmosphere of "abbondanza" and good cheer. Yes it is a special place to be served a special dinner. Godere!
Visiting from Florida for the Holidays, we chose A Cena for our New Year's dinner in Sellwood. We weren't disappointed and had a lovely dinner of grilled Mediterannean Sea Bass and Eggplant Parmesian. The service was perfect and we will happily dine here again.
This is a lovely restaurant and I wanted to like it more. It’s very pricey for the neighborhood and the pasta was not al dente, but undercooked on the late afternoon of New Year’s Eve. The waiter and owner were great, the salads awesome, but doubt if I’ll return.
We've been to a Cena multiple times and I tell people it's one my favorites in Portland. I love the cozy atmosphere, and really yummy food. The homemade pasta is delicious. It's small so I wouldn't go without reservations. My husband and I have been there both alone and with our kids (8 and 12, now). This night was with our kids, who eat out a lot, and we kind of joked because when they are with us we seem to get seated at the "kids" table which is one of the less ideal tables in the restaurant. But I get it and it was still a lovely meal. Will look forward to our next visit.
We don't make it here often, probably twice a year for a special occasion but we have yet to be disappointed. A reservation is almost always required but we never have to wait for our table, the service is always wonderful, the food is always good and the specials are always unique. Great local spot!
Another magical meal at A Cena! Part of it was the snowy Christmas Eve walk, and watching snowfall as we ate. They had a special dungeness crab bruschetta which was fantastic with the tang of lemon juice and capers, without overpowering the crab. Also had their signature truffles for dessert, and will do so again whenever they're on the menu—only quibble is that they were served so cold as to be nearly icy in the middle, which inhibited the appreciation of the aromatics of the chocolate and liqueurs. The wait staff was attentive without hovering, and in the holiday spirit. It was great.
Highly recommend for upscale casual dining. Just the right seating capacity but, a bit loud, due to seating arrangements. Not a show stopper by no means...we will dine there again. The wait staff could be a bit more welcoming and better personalize the service. But, overall excellent!
Crowded Saturday night, and our reservation was ready exactly on time. Service was excellent and efficient. Friendly servers and a nice visit from the owner or manager. It was our first time here. We had three different pastas. All were great, fresh, and homemade. The signature agnolotti with lobster was a fine choice. Other dishes were the caramelle (creamy ricotta filling) and the garganelli with white wine cream sauce. We loved the place but felt the price for pasta was a little high. We will return though.
As always, perfect! I took 3 other ladies with me, who've never experienced a Cena, to celebrate one of their birthdays. Food wowed them, service was great, and the whole birthday dinner was nothing but fabulous! A Cena is our go to place to take people when visiting from out of town or friends who have never experienced such wonderful authentic cuisine.
This place is a gem! The food is over-the-top delicious . The staff make you feel like your dining experience is very important. I took my daughter here for her birthday and we had a wonderful time. We were still talking about it the next day. So impressed!
It was good but not as exciting as we had hoped. It was a little heavy and rich and our stomachs felt a little funny all night after. We also felt that even though the staff was great, our server was really trying to turn the table. Everything came out too fast.
