About

This restaurant is permanently closed. Permanently Closed - a casa fox specializes in authentic Latin American cuisine inspired by Chef Melissa Fox's Nicaraguan mother. The food is served in a rustic setting in Manhattan's trendy Lower East Side with a crackling fire place and decorated throughout with family keepsakes.

Dishes range from tapas-style starters - empanadas and beef chimichurri skewers - as well as larger main dishes like braised short ribs with rice, beans and fried plantain chips.

Ask for a box of empanadas to go, store them in the freezer, then re-heat them for your next house party. Or ask us to cater your next special event, either at your place or at a casa fox, where we can accommodate up to 45 for dinner or 60 for cocktails.

9 of us decided to do an impromptu Saturday night dinner, thought it would be impossible but looked on Open Table for a place that could fit us for a last minute reservation and we ended up at A Casa Fox. We were very happy with the whole experience. We shared a bunch of tapas and got a couple of main dishes for the group which were perfect for a lighter bite before heading out on a Saturday night!

Food was okay. Came here with friends for a birthday. Our waitress was very pushy about ordering more dishes and running up the bill. She kept trying to push her own opinion of how we should order on us without really listening to the fact that some of our group were vegetarians and therefore we didn't want an all meat menu. Additionally she kept pushing all of the more expensive items and attempting to refill drinks when we hadn't asked for additional ones. In the end, people were a bit surprised by the bill given the quantity/quality of the food. Luckily, one member of our group was willing to wrangle the waitress to order what we wanted versus her tasting menu option. If my friend hadn't stepped in and repeatedly corrected the waitress as we ordered, I fear what the end bill would have actually been.

Adorable space. Cozy and warm and inviting. Food was somewhat disappointing...for $24 I ordered the seafood clay pot and there was maybe a cup of rice, 5 mussels, a pinch of calamari and maybe 5 shrimp. I was still hungry after I finished eating. Maybe there are better things on the menu?

Very cozy, inviting atmosphere and excellent service. I thought the food and especially drinks were a bit over-priced for what they were, but both were - well not spectacular - tasty and promptly-served.

We recently discovered this gem of a restaurant before attending a show at the Mercury Lounge and were so blown away we've now returned multiple times. Delicious flavors and ingredients combine with a cozy dining room and fireplace to make it a perfect destination for all sorts of occasions. The owner/chef Melissa and her staff are always so friendly and warm. We recommend trying the plantain chips & guacamole, empanada sampler or one of the delectable clay pots, and there are always several unique specials to choose from. The cocktail and beer selection is also fantastic; we're particularly fond of their excellent margaritas. Check it out!

The food at A Casa Fox was amazing and the owner Melissa was warm and welcoming. The fried manchego is not to be missed. The service wasn't great but everything else was delightful. There was a group of us and we sat at the large corner table which was really fun.

A Casa Fox is one few restaurants in NYC serving Nicaraguan inspired cuisine. Being one diner from our group is a native Nicaraguan and a foodie, she was selected as being the best suited to judge the many dishes our table sampled. After enjoying most of the tapas side of the menu (entrees are also available), we all reached the same conclusion - deliciosa! Some ingredients did appear Nicaraguan in origin (e.g. beans from the rice and beans and the tortillas were home made) and all dishes were very tasty, albeit not entirely authentic in preparation. Given most folks won't know the difference, it's not a deal breaker.

The service on the other hand could have been better. We were the first of the weekday dinner crowd and felt our server lacked warmth (not one smile or "how is everything") and attentiveness (it took at least 15 minutes to get the bill paid and wait for change). The server also lacked knowledge of the menu (how do you not know if you have tropical juices or dessert?). Being he stated he was "new", I can give him a by on the menu.

Overall, A Casa Fox is an escape from the typical Latin fare and recommend. The food is good and the ambiance is an escape from the ordinary and harkens back to Chef Fox's roots.

Absolutely amazing. Come with an open mind to try typical Nicaraguan cuisine and feast. I strongly recommend the Gallo Pinto, Plantain chips with beans, empanadas with chorizo and Manchego cheese. You can ask the owner for plate recommendations and she will prepare an amazing platter of dishes you can't have anywhere else in the city.

Drinks-wise, I recommend trying the Toña beer which is a tasty lager from Nicaragua and if you're bold enough for something spicy, try the michelada.

10/10, can't wait to come back.

A Casa Fox is a MUST try for locals and visitors to NYC! The menu is incredible and latin inspired. Love knowing that the chef and owner is often in the kitchen and chatting with the clientele, makes it feel so personable. Bravo Melissa Fox!!!

Great food, a bit expensive, but the only problem was there was one poor guy working the whole restaurant. It was a Thursday night... That meant it took 15 mins for drink orders to be put in, 30 mins for food to be ordered, 15 more mins for drinks to arrive, etc. etc.

Simply put, a bit over priced and with slow service outweighs the amazing quality of the food.

Very quiet night we went (stormy weather). Went with tapa recommendations of host. Very very good. Go crazy on tapas, you find a very nice experience. Desserts were also very good. Not a flan person but expresso flan was great surprise.

Top notch food. I used to live in Costa Rica and this place tops the high end restaurants in Central America. Its one of my favorite spots in NYC. Our waitress was super nice and helpful. This place could charge a lot more than they do. Absolute GEM. Took my girlfriend on valentines day, it was perfect.

Found this place to be a nice low key spot in soho. Although the tables are close to the entrance, which for my valentines dinner was 2 degrees outside, the cold air did find it's way into the restaurant every time the door opened, but the staff kept the wood burning in the fireplace, and made it feel comfortable for the evening. The dinner itself was enjoyable, and fulfilling. Overall, the evening was a nice break from the norm.

The one thing I could have enjoyed more, was the ambient music selection. Although the name of the restaurant doesn't suggest it is Latin Cuisine, the meñu for sure is, and it would have been great to listen to some latin ballads or latin jazz instead of the playlist they were playing.

We love A Casa Fox, the tapas style allowed our group of 5 to try a wide variety of dishes, all of which were excellent. Out 3 favorites are the pork ribs and the pulled-pork empanada, and the avocado and heart of palm salad, but everything is great.

So pleased I've found this place - the venue itself is nice, though admittedly pretty noisy since there were a few large groups seated when I was there on a Friday at 8pm. We ordered a bunch of tapas and they were all delicious! I didn't love my sangria but otherwise was totally pleasantly surprised by this little neighborhood gem.

We basically decided that the food was so good, we were coming back soon. But the cocktails were so average that we would only order wine from now on. Maybe the bartender was having an off night, but we tried 3 different one's and they were all bad. So, $35 worth of cocktails that are bad was enough for us. But the food is delicious. Great small bites that you can share with someone so you try lots of things. Very fresh, very filling. Ambiance is super cozy, especially if you are with someone right near the fireplace. Check it out.
