They need to focus on one type of food and do it well. The menu is to all over the place.
Between the 4 of us - none of us loved our dishes. Many were passable but not memorable.
Things to avoid: pho and spaghetti squash (tasted like perfumes sauerkraut).
What was good: Salmon was good but small portion need a different side. Asian slaw.
What needs help: fish and chips needs some spice as fairly tasteless. Cauliflower burger need to be softer. Waitress blurted requested in middle of conversations, would have been more normal to wait 30 seconds to be noticed.
The decor is much more modern than its predecessor's, as is its menu. The Asian-inspired menu offers something for everyone. The lemongrass honey wings were recommended by our awesome and very knowledgeable server, Lorne, and they were amazing! I'd go back just for those wings! The desserts are NOT to be missed, either!
Loved the asian influence in all the food. The batter on the tofu was nice and light, the vegetarian cauliflower burger was amazing and so was the mushroom pho. Dessert was ok. The ice cream on th peach cake was extremely cold and almost brittle. But everything else was great. Service was excellent. After a while though, mosquitoes really started bothering us outside, so get a table inside if possible
We had a large group- 11. The waiter and waitress were available for our every need. The good was great !! They even moved us to the back room to make it more comfortable for the large group. The only issue we had was that the air conditioning was much too high and we had to ask numerous time to make it warmer, which finally happened by dessert time.
Poor food over priced. Slow service.
The summer rolls were 95% rice noodles with a thick, gluey peanut sauce. Bread on the Bahn Mi was burned Thai beef salad was bland. Our waiter was pleasant but we had to ask for water, our drinks (ice tea and draft beer) took close to 10 minutes, in general the service was slow even though the restaurant was less than 30% occupied.
Everything was so good! The service. The food. The decor
We went as a group of 8 to celebrate some birthdays and were welcomed by a super cute lovely hostess.
The bartender was knowledgeable and very professional (also super cute)
The manager took special care to make sure our large party would be comfortably seated and that our friend with several allergies was able to have a delicious meal.
We tried one of everything and were all very impressed with the quality and taste
Surprising favorite...cauliflower burger! Out of this world 💥
Also very impressed by the Pad Thai and Pork Belly Fried Rice
Our server was so attentive. With a party of 8 he got everything right and even went above and beyond to make sure the table had lots of popcorn and brought our friends a birthday dessert of chocolate spring rolls with the most aaaaaaamazing ice cream. My anniversary is coming up and we will be here to celebrate. Definitely recommend and will be back very often.
8th and Union has it all. Great food, excellent service and a wonderful ambiance.
While the new decor has done wonders for a previously dark and dreary space and the bartenders were very nice and attentive, the food was mediocre at best. The pot of mussels was so-so and the bread served w was burnt on the bottom-- not a compliment to the mussels flavor. My burger, ordered medium, was served well done but fries were good. Ahi tuna on the salad was also woefully over cooked. The description of gastropub was misleading as they predominantly serve Asian cuisine-- be sure to check the menu before visiting. I would try again but probably only for happy hour cocktails and apps.
We have been to 8th and Union twice and both times we have enjoyed a good meal. Good drinks as well. Really enjoy the Asian inspired food.
We arrived and were pleasantly surprised to see how nicely renovated the place was. Unfortunately it all ended there. Food was less than tasty. One meal was undercooked and the pad Thai was tasteless. I must say they did recook another meal to replace the undercooked one but still the experience was not good at all.
Had a great meal at a really cool place. They did a great job remodeling this place and the Bar area is very cool.
Great appetizers, loved the Sampler and the salads
Pan Asian menu. Great service
Great interior design and layout worked well. Food was well presented with great flavors. Excelent place!
We really liked the Union City Grille and were sorry to see it go, so we were eager to see what would replace it. The new restaurant i s more casual than its predecessor. They've put the bar in what used to be the large dining room and made the smaller room into the dining room. The menu is an interesting mix of Vietnamese and American. I really enjoyed my green curry chicken and my husband also enjoyed his salmon. They really did some interesting things with the vegetables -- his spaghetti squash had a nice al dente texture that I'd love to learn to reproduce at home. On the slightly-too-casual side, instead of bread on the table, they gave us a pie tin of seasoned popcorn, which was interesting but kind of inelegant. Our server, Dylan, was very attentive and pleasant.
We looked at other reviews of this restaurant and decided to give it a go. I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. The food tasted super fresh, and the flavors were akin to taking a trip to South East Asia. The food tasted very authentic. Our server was extremely professional and attended to our every need. Our son is in a wheelchair and they have no problem accommodating him. The entrance seems to be a bit small for a wheelchair so FYI. This appears to be a good spot for a romantic dinner. I will definitely visit here again.
Great pho and bahn mi. Server was excellent. The blonde hostess was nasty and miserable when we asked to switch tables. They need someone with a better personality ... She could turn people off from coming to a great restaurant.
Amazing and different menu, great atmosphere, food was incredible, and the staff were courteous! Whole experience was a true pleasure!
Service perfect. Room temp water, GREAT, don't like cold water. Pork belly burger, great, like the idea of popcorn better than bread, it was spicy though. Will return.
We had visited Union City Grille often & was hoping the replacement would be comparable. We were very pleased with our first visit. The renovations are wonderful. Love the new look & happy that it's more open now instead of two separate rooms. Ambience was nice, service was excellent! Food was very good too. Elizabeth, our waitress took very good care of us and it was nice to see John is still a server. He always remembers my DeWars Scotch! We will definitely be back to 8th & Union Kitchen.
Took a chance after reading one review. Arrived with reservation for 4 hungry people, after 9p. Great food, energetic server. Never made to feel we were pushing the kitchen's "time envelope''.
Soft shell crabs were delicious, but the pasta they were served with was too spicey . More veggies/less pasta would've made the dish perfect. Very pleasant server. Varied menu. Accessible parking.
8&UK has been consistently delicious since new owner Chef Brian Ashby purchased and renovated the old Union City Grille. The interior reminds me of high-end restaurants in NYC or DC, the crowd is always lively, the service is attentive & friendly, and most importantly, the Southeast Asian influenced menu has so many winners and so few duds.
Went on opening week and there are still a few 'kinks' to work out. There was a mishap with our table when they first tried to seat us and it Took some time for our server to greet us.... But staff was friendly. Pork buns and mussels were delicious! Oysters tasted a little gritty. Place looks great! They did a great job with renovating UCG.
