We expected more since the menu seems varied and innovative. Sadly the execution of food preparation was average at best. The Pho was bland, even with peppers added to spice up the beef and brisket. The salad was average. More seriously though, despite asking for no apples, and having that confirmed when the salad was served, there were several apple slices in it. Luckily we're not allergic to apples because using an ingredient that we asked to be omitted could have serious consequences. This seems odd at a restaurant that puts such a big focus on vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options.
Bland, flavorless chicken satay, served lukewarm.
Burnt, flavorless pork tacos.
Dry, flavorless beef tacos.
Cinnamon brulee rice pudding, flavorless.
It's like the chef and or kitchen staff don't know how to cook.
Taste your food.
Bland and boring.
Will not be back as it was way over priced too.
We went for breakfast. Between 4 kids and 2 adults....non of our meals were good. Pancakes tasted like cardboard...how do you mess up pancakes??? I was really excited for a fun fathers day brunch...but left very disappointed. However the live music and ambiance is great.
(Sunday Brunch) The service was outstanding. We asked to move tables after being seated and having drinks, and we were accommodated without any complaints. Our server was attentive without ever being overbearing. The restaurant wasn't crowded, and we NEVER felt like we were being rushed.
The food was fine. We had the breakfast croissant sandwich and the breakfast tacos. Main dishes were good, but the breakfast potatoes were lackluster and we did not eat them.
The blues musician playing for Sunday brunch was absolutely wonderful. Volume was loud enough to enjoy but not too loud to prevent conversation. Overall, the ambiance of the restaurant was VERY enjoyable for a Sunday afternoon.
The food is always so-so at 8th and Union. Everything sounds great, but when it comes to the table, it's just OK. I had fried rice, and the rice was a bit underdone and the dish lacked flavor. Other people at the table had crab cakes, which they said weren't great, and a burger, which was "fine." Great ambiance and great drinks. Just wish the food matched.
Waitress took very long to serve the table. Long periods of waiting. When time to pay, credit card sat for 15 mins waiting...but food was great and I’ll definitely be back!
We had ate at 8th & Union Kitchen for Mother’s Day was excellent then.
We wanted to return which obviously we did but unfortunately it was as Great as before. We were disappointed.
Hostess was rude- borderline HOSTILE : Didn't care that we had a reservation for party of 6, directed us to a cramped booth, and looked annoyed when I asked for a bigger table (the restaurant was 15% full at best!). We were eventually moved but not to the larger tables made for a party of 6 but rather to tables pushed together in the corner. There was no other party seated in the dining room ! Host THREW the menus on the table and left in a huff!! We all quietly hoped it was just a bizarre moment. Unfortunately, the experience did not get better.
Server: While she was pleasant, I think we saw her 3 times during our meal. She had not tried any of the drinks or food. She told us she couldn't recommend anything. We had one opportunity to order drinks. (and on a positive note, my cocktail was very good). Our appetizers appeared WITH our food about 45 minutes after we ordered!
Filet MigNOT: The filet mignon was a piece of sirloin cut in a standard filet mignon shape!!! I picked this restaurant because the menu appeared promising! THINGS ARE NOT AS THEY APPEAR! I still can't get over the chef tried to pull a fast one!
Since we barely saw any staff and were truly deflated, we just ate and got out of there as quickly as possible. We were celebrating a major event and needed to get out from under this black cloud of a dining experience.
I made the reservation 3 weeks ago on open table (I was visiting from out of town for the UD graduation weekend).
The smartest thing about this restaurant is they have their reviews on Open Table locked down. I had to contact Open Table directly to get access to post a review.
If the restaurant is still open on my next trip back to Delaware, I will be shocked...or it will be under new management with a new staff. Either way, I will never eat there again. I sincerely hope that others who are celebrating important milestones see this and turn away! What a bust!
This was a delicious meal. Prices were reasonable for what we got. Service was quality...we will return!
Food and service was fantastic once we got past the rude and surly hostess. Mother’s Day reservation for 4 and insisted we sit in the bar area right next to the front door.
There was an open booth in the dining room, so we insisted on that. It took a while and was uncomfortable having to take a stand, but we ultimately got to where we needed to be.
This looked great at first. Live music, but not too loud, just setting a mood. Nice atmosphere.
All four of us just felt that the food was just so-so. It was brunch which was what we came for. I had the country potatoes and eggs. It was all mushy. I left half of the potatoes. My wife ordered French toast and one slice was completely burnt (solid black) on one side. How does a restaurant serve such a thing? Would it have been so hard to cook another slice?
When we were done eating we just sat there with dirty plates in front of us. The server went back and forth to other nearby tables(and it wasn’t that busy) but ignored us. When we finally got his attention and told him we were finished, we thought that would be his cue to clear the table. Nope. He just said “Ok”, and walked away. He did return with the check, but after we paid and got up to leave, our table was still covered with the dishes. Strange.
This just isn’t a place we would return to. Sorry.
We thought it was overpriced. Appetizers were good but the meals were just ok
Some plain appetizer for us simple eaters! And maybe a simple pasta dish! But other then that is was great..
Always love a visit to 8th & Union! Good food and a good beer list!
This was just a family dinner on a Friday evening. Not crowded unlike one Saturday we tried to get a table and were turned away. This establishment just has great food. Good tasting, well thought out. The Chinese could take some lessons here on how to make great fried rice.
Amazing gluten free menu. Please open in nj! The only thing missing was non pork and vegetarian options instead of ham. Service was great, too.
Great food. Very unique and interesting. Service was fun.
Wonderful ambiance and close to Winterthur Museum, Longwood Gardens, and Hagley Mills. I have dined here twice for my birthday, and am grateful for the safe gluten free menu due to my celiac disease. The burgers are out of this world, and so creative!
Had chicken & waffles Easter Sunday. Chicken was bland & waffles were dry. Place was nice but probably will not be back.
This is my fourth visit to 8th and Union Kitchen. We went for Sunday brunch for Easter. Disappointed in the food this time. I ordered the same thing I've had twice before, which I loved, but this time was mediocre at best. The gluten free waffle that came with the chicken and waffles was awful. Not sure why it needs to be gluten free--could offer that option on request. The hamburger one of our companions ordered was not cooked according to his preference. I asked about the various champagne cocktails and whether fruit puree was used--for example raspberry-- and was told yes. There was no fruit puree in the drink--only a few raspberries. Will be awhile before I return.
Spectacular and varied gluten-free options!! Our celiac birthday girl was able to enjoy more excellent foods than she had in years; this place is wonderful and the staff is all well versed in allergy issues. We loved sitting by the fireplace. We'll be back!!
Shared small plates were excellent. Lots of gluten free and vegetarian options for all dietary needs. One of my favorite restaurants for girls’ night!
Decent place. Service could have been better.
The food is good, but the music during Sunday brunch is extraordinary. The place has a nice, relaxing atmosphere, service is great .
Best gluten-free restaurant between Baltimore and Philadelphia, no doubt. Only place I feel safe eating without having to doubt the kitchen.
8th & Union Kitchen made a lot of improvement from our last visit. We had a few vegan people in our party and their brunch menu wasn't very vegan friendly. They kindly made us a vegan omelette that wasn't on the menu. It was fantastic. The chef really nailed the vegetables on it. I'm very happy that they were so accommodating and thoughtful.
We really enjoyed the evening. The staff was amazing and the food was unique and delicious.
Food was over seasoned. One guest in our party sent her meal back twice. Once was way over cooked. The other was ice cold. Very disappointed. Service was fine but the food is not worth it
Fantastic service, awesome food, friendly and fun staff. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
It was OK server was not great and food was just OK
Service was almost nonexistent. Waited 10 minutes after seating to get water and then another 10 minutes to just order drinks. There were empty tables guess they just did not have enough staff. Food was good once we got it
Wonderful brunch food. I am gluten free and can’t normally eat brunch foods. I had a delicious crab cake eggs Benedict dish.
Loved 8th and Union - food was phenomenal, service was excellent and ambiance was perfect. New fave spot.
The food here is just ok
Tried to order two different bottles of wine, and they didn't have either. Food was way overpriced for what we got. Quality and taste of food was disappointing. I would not return.
nice atmosphere, server was good, entrees took more than 35 minutes to come out, causing my family of five to be late for an 8:00 show. This family Christmas outing is something we do every year and show tickets are expensive. It put a damper on our outing.
We went on 1/2 price burger day! Burgers were delish! I'd go back on full price day with no hesitation.
Dessert, however, was another story. . . .got their $9.00 bread pudding. Serving was way, way too small for price & made with gluten free bread. Sorry, Tasted terrible. Chef should make a regular one also.
This was our first time eating at 8th and Union. I was told that they had good vegan options. I was a little underwhelmed with their vegan selection personally. We ended up getting corn soup and french fries with dip.The vegan dip options were just okay. Honestly not worth the extra money over getting plain french fries and ketchup. The corn soup had a nice flavor, but was very thin almost like water. I guess I like my soup a little thicker. My daughter enjoyed her cauliflower bites. The only vegan option they had on their dessert menu was discontinued when we tried to order it. The server told us it wasn't popular. I'm not sure why they didn't replace it with another vegan option. Service was very slow for a place that wasn't super busy. I honestly think our server forgot about us at one point. The owner came over to our table to show his concern after a glass shattered in my 4 year old's hand, which was nice of him. My son was thankfully okay though I did suggest they contact the manufacturer since he could've been seriously injured. The decor is quite lovely. I had been here years ago when it was a different restaurant, and they really made it look a million times nicer. I think it's worth a try if you've never had them, but there is definitely room for some improvement.
The wait staff was not very attentive to our glasses. They are not forth coming with pricing with specials. They staff seemed more concerned about each other than there tables.
