Truly a neighborhood gem. Not pretentious and not trendy. Just excellent food!
Especially enjoyed the chianti braised short rib pasta as well as the octopus appetizer. Service is friendly as well.
Dinner and service was just ok. Had to ask for bread several times and was told it comes when you order your meal:( also ordered an appetizer for the table to have with our drinks and was told we can’t order that separately and it too had to be ordered with our entire meal
Really great and reliable UES Italian.
A great neighborhood restaurant with good specials and good basic Italian. Good for many visits
Great neighborhood restaurant. Very friendly and accommodating to a first time guest. Delicious dinner... loved the duck papardell and pounded veal chop parmigiana. We will be back for sure!
I hesitate to write anything because I want to keep this Upper East Side gem to myself! This smallish off the avenue Italian gem features a standard tasty menu featuring their signature eggplant parmesan meatballs, sauted artichoke hearts and a wonderful salami & cheese board. Make sure you check out the nightly specials and the very reasonable winelist...Plus they give a great pour on all drinks!
Everything was well prepared and presented. The shellfish, shrimp, scallops and calamari were all beautifully presented, succulent and delicious. The pasta was fantastic and so was the coffee. We enjoyed our dinner very much and would come back again.
The food was excellent, no complaints there. However, the service was not so great. The second that we arrived we felt like they were pushing us out the door. A huge part of the dining experience for me is the service and unfortunately it was not great. The food was great though.
83 1/2 is a true neighborhood gem. Home-made pasta, very fresh fish and an extensive Italian wine list, all reasonably priced.
Very good Italian food. Their signature eggplant balls were amazing. The gnocchi was pretty good too.
Neighborhood gem , food is consistently fresh and good and the service always get high ratings.
Tasty food. Average service. A bit pricey for the amount of pasta that was served. Surf and turf was good, better turf than surf.
Service was at times a little overbearing. He struggled to read the interest level at the table of his recommendations, etc. A card was given at the start to avoid any issues for payment when it came time for the bill. Sadly, this was overlooked and the bill came to the table anyway. The fight over the check ensued. Seemed like they weren't on the A game. But it was my third time here. The food is quite good, albeit a tad pricey, so I'll likely give it another shot.
The veal chop had too much salt on it. I could see the crystals on top. It is perfectly delicious without this extra salt.
Very pleasant local restaurant. The food is always outstanding. We’ve never been disappointed.
Good food and service, but quite cramped quarters.
83 1/2 is a true neighborhood gem Very fresh fish and delicious pasta at a reasonable price
Always fabulous! Lovely, friendly, service. Excellent food.
Our first time there. Pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and 'buzz'. Good food, great service. Looking forward to going back.
I've lived on the UES for 30 years and never ate here until now. I enjoyed it so much that I went back two evenings in a row with different sets of friends
The Clams Casino ($14) had virtually no taste because the size of the clam inside the shell was minuscule. The Halibut Oreganata ($27) that I had here about four weeks ago was delicious, this time it was bland. I won't be back. I asked the waiter, who had recognized me from my previous visit, if there was a different chef there today than the last time, he said no.
The service was very attentive and the food delicious. This is a really reliable Italian restaurant. The tables have enough space between them that you can speak with your companions. Well done!
The worst, most disrespectful service I have ever experienced in a restaurant. When we arrived, we were told we could sit wherever we like. Before paying our check, we were asked if we could move tables to accommodate a party of four that was waiting. We politely said that we were about to pay and were finishing up. Then, while still drinking the bottle of wine we had purchased, a waiter came over and loudly said in an incredibly rude tone, “THERE ARE PEOPLE WAITING.” I have never in my life been treated that way in a restaurant.
Also, this would not have bothered us if the meal hadn’t ended the way it did, but the service was sloppy throughout - we were asked twice about what kind of water we’d like, and were given dessert menus and declined dessert twice. About five different waiters served us throughout the night.
My friend and I both live in the neighborhood, and will never be back.
Great tasting food, a lot of varied menu items. There are acoustic dampeners on the ceiling to help with the noise level, which is great. The table layout is a bit tight, but otherwise everything was delicious, service was great.
83 1/2 is a casual UES neighborhood gem specializing in authentic Sicilian cuisine. Artichoke and eggplant dishes are especially delicious. Nice selection of wines and some interesting specialty cocktails too. One of my all time favorite restaurants.
Good food, but we not felt welcomed.
Had a great meal with friends. Lovely ambience and great food. Has a cozy feel and excellent service. Had the zucchini crusted Branzino. Excellent!
We are weekly regulars here now. It’s not in our hood, so we have to travel. There are lots of other restaurants in NYC, but this is the one Italian restaurant we return to. We try others, but none compare. It’s not inexpensive, but we don’t mind paying a few dollars more for quality food and service. It’s not gourmet or nouvelle, thank goodness. You get portions that will fill you up. Most customers are regulars I suppose. This week the three of us had the baked clams (the best we’ve eaten), the prosciutto wrapped burrata (excellent), and the roasted Brussel sprouts with reggiano parm SS appetizers. The entrees were a veal piccata, a chicken Parmesan, and a linguine vongole. Everything was delicious. The menu is extensive with losts to choose from. The wine list is primarily Italian with lots of wonderful choices at fair prices. And, if you happen to go on a Wed., it’s byob and no corkage fee. Salute or Cin Cin.
One of my favorite neighborhood restaurants...warm and inviting ..everything was excellent
Outstanding gem. Great tasty food. Creative Italian cuisine. Extraordinary service. Everything was just perfect. Easy accommodations for all diets. Will definitely go again.
83 1/2 is a neighborhood gem. Great pasta and very fresh fish
I had the delicious Pasta e Fagioli Soup (pasta and bean soup). As my main course I had the equally delicious Halibut Oreganata (with the same topping you find on Clams Oreganata. Both of those dishes are on their everyday menu.
Great foo! Truly excellent lasagna special. Best veal chop parmagiana in the city. And it is a bargain. Better than the top prices Italian restaurant in Zagat. Truly superb
Best homemade pasta and more!
The food was as authentic as the meals we dined on in Italy. The chicken Parmesan melted in your mouth with such a burst of flavor. The pasta was cooked to al dente' perfection. We couldn't have been more pleased with our dining selection for our last night in NY.
Don't usually go to restaurants on the upper east side of manhattan since they're often rather stuffy an don't seem as welcoming as restaurants in other neighborhoods. This was a nice place that i assume is a local gem. The food , wine and service was excellent and I'd be more than willing to go back. The lighting is very dim so it was difficult to read the menu but i was on a date and appreciated the low lights.
This place keeps exceeding my expectations! I love the cozy, low key atmosphere, excellent customer service and delicious food. The waiter let us take as much time as we needed to settle in, order drinks and chat before having a chance to review the menu and order. They were very accommodating and proactively split up an appetizer we mentioned was to be shared into three separate beautiful dishes. He was helpful with wine recommendations and they even brought us an extra dessert at the end of dinner. They go out of their way to make sure customers are happy and have a good experience, plus the food is amazing! Will certainly be returning and recommending this restaurant to others!
Third time there this month. Friends came in from Florida and this is where we took them. Excellent food, you’re treated like family, great wine. Luckily it’s a close walk, but it’s worth the trek if you’re not in the neighborhood.
This was only our second visit to 83 1/2 for a Saturday night dinner - we don't live in NYC - It is a charming little place, busy, attentive staff make the experience better and the food is really wonderful! With all the other choices in town, we'll continue to go out of our way to come here! It's that good!
The food was delicious. The tables are small so it felt a little crowded.
