801 Chophouse – Des Moines Ratings and Reviews
We were traveling to Des Moines for a corporate event and stumbled upon 801 accidently. We started the night with a drink at the bar. Shannon and Drew were so friendly and engaging behind the bar so we decided to eat dinner at a table in the bar area where they could take care of us. And that they did!! My husband’s bone-in prime rib melted in his mouth and the filet I had was one of the best I’ve ever had- and that’s impressive coming from a Texan who eats beef 24/7. The chocolate soufflé ended the night perfectly. The only disappointment was that 801 wasn’t open for lunch the next day! Not an inexpensive place for food but it’s worth every dollar spent and the some. Don’t miss this place!
We went on new years, it was very busy, but the staff handled it with ease. Everyone was so nice and helpful every step of the way. The waiter balanced the attentiveness to our needs and respect for privacy expertly. The food was amazing and the ambiance/whole dining experience was first class and wonderful.
We come here every year for dinner before heading out for family Christmas travels. The food and drinks are always delicious. The staff is professional and courteous. The holiday decorations and music are lovely and tasteful. The scallops in particular were to die for. I highly recommend this restaurant for special occasions.
I have an annual tradition of a dinner at 801 Chophouse every December. It's a sort of Christmas gift to myself and one other person. Since this began, I have always been impressed with the quality of food, level of service, and beauty of the restaurant during the Christmas season, and this year was no exception. Truly this is a dinner I look forward to every year and it is always a wonderful evening at one of the best restaurants I know.
We went to 801 for our anniversary and had a wonderful evening. Started with an extensive wine list followed by a lobster appetizer, amazing steaks (NY Strip & a Filet) with a cognac, mushroom sauce, followed by a peppermint cheesecake and an after dinner martini. One of the best meals I've ever had with top notch service. It was a Monday night so it was fairly quiet. With a bill over $200 for two people it will only be a special occasion place, but it was wonderful for our anniversary.
We've now been to the 801 Chophouse three times - each as a special occasion. We look forward to it every time! The steaks are done to perfection and we love sharing the sides. Had fantastic cocktails and a super dessert. We've had the same waitress a couple of times and she knows the menu inside and out and is incredibly attentive! Wish I could tell you her name, but it escapes me! We will be back again!
We had a 6:30 reservation that I made earlier in the week. We arrived on time and were promptly seated but in the bar area. It was incredibly loud and very crowded, so loud it was hard to have a conversation and so crowded it was difficult to get out of our booth. The bartenders were yelling and plates were being stacked next to our booth. We saw the server when we ordered and then again when we received the check. Other employees brought the food and drink to the table without saying a word. We had to ask for water refills and it took almost 90 minutes from the time we ordered until our meals arrived. During that entire time we only saw someone when our appetizer and salads were delivered. The steaks arrived without so much as a piece of parsley on the plate, just a huge plate with a steak on it. The food was great but for almost $200 for two people, I expected better service, better atmosphere, and not to have to yell in order to have a conversation. We were disappointed.
Always outstanding! THE best Chilean Sea Bass I’ve had & the preparation with cranberries & sweet potatoes was excellent! My husband thoroughly enjoyed his filet in the cognac butter & portobello mushroom sauce. EXCELLENT service, beautifully decorated for the holidays. Highly recommend!!
We usually go to 801 for special occasions, this time I took my girlfriend there for her birthday. When I made the reservation I commented that our visit was for a birthday. When we arrived there was some birthday confetti on the table, a birthday card and her menu said Happy Birthday on it. It was a very pleasant surprise to walk to our table to see that and she really enjoyed it. As always, the food was amazing and worth the visit. I highly recommend 801 Chophouse.
We enjoyed the atmosphere greatly. Saw everyone dressed from casual to dressy. (Helped make us out of towners fit in.) I just wish when the waiter knew we were from out of town he explained the menu a little better. The sides are really meant to be shared not just for one person( we ordered 1 for each of us, got a little costly with a lot of leftovers) the filet that both my son and husband ordered they raved over! Thought it was exceptionally prepared. Me on the other hand, I had the prime rib. (I consider myself to be a bit of a snob with this cut of meat because I love it so much.) I was disappointed that it was melt in your mouth good. It was just average. I had high hopes being an expensive chophouse. Overall it was a good dining experience and would recommend to friends.
