Great service. Our steak was okay. The halibut was overdone,so dry, and quite salty.

The service and atmosphere were fairly top notch (servers were AWESOME!!!). We ordered the bone-in filet special and were disappointed that the cooks of each steak were so different when both were ordered as medium rare. We would generally have sent them back but were celebrating a special occasion and needed to finish our meal and move onto the next item. After spending $95 per steak, it wasn’t the expected quality when paying that much. Not sure if we’d return other than for drinks in the future.

Quite simply, the best steakhouse dining experience I've ever had. Certainly not inexpensive, but for a periodic indulgence, it's unmatchable. "Lou" was our server and she did an outstanding job, including working with the chef and kitchen staff to prepare oysters florentine for our table. We enjoyed the entire evening. Thanks.

Longtime server Skip and his trainee Abby were amazing as usual. Very busy night but they checked on us often and kept the evening running smoothly. It was our 29th wedding anniversary and the staff had a card, specially noted menus and comped our dessert. Very nice touch
Only concern was my steak being a tad tough (always remember to order a notch more done than you like since they undercook everything- they told me that but I should have listened lol) and our boursin mashed potatoes were cool. Manager went and got a replacement which was just a bit warmer but still not super hot. However---Drinks, wine, salads, bread, creamed spinach, creme brulee, and my wifes filet were ALL on point.
Such a great atmosphere and special night out. Always recommend 801 to anyone looking for an exceptional dining experience.

If you are looking for a great place to celebrate a promotion or anniversary, this is the spot. Excellent food, with nice sized portions so you won't go home hungry. The atmosphere is charming and elegant.

We had a great dining experience at 801. Our server, Zach, was excellent. The Troon cocktail is very good as well. We ordered oysters, filets, scallops and for sides the lobster Mac n cheese, garlic mashed potatoes, broccolini and asparagus and it was all excellent! Great place for a date night

Went in for a long needed date night and a belated birthday dinner. All the food was great, drinks were great. Carried top end liquor, Louis the VIII, which we got and nice to see it’s stocked.
We ran into 1 issue.. nearly eating glass. We got the escargot and the dish it was served in, was broken on one side under one of the portions. It was a decent sized shard of glass roughly 1/2-3/4” in length. It under up hidden under the cheese. Then ended up in my fiancé’s mouth. We promptly got it out and contacted management. They took off the escargot off our bill and replaced it with a free one. As well as giving us a free dessert.
Experience was great, except that one incident, which kind of ruined the night experience. Made all the food pile up on top of each other, still having an appetizer while the food came out. But will still be returning at some point and time to give it another run.
Bill ended at ~700 after tip. So with the quality of the food and the selection of drinks, it was well worth it.

Great birthday meal with my family! Finally had to try the 40oz Tomahawk Ribeye, and it did not disappoint. Plenty for the take out box too.

Absolute horrible experience. Service was awful and food was over priced and average at best. Never filled out a rating on Open Table until now. Felt compelled. Covid should bring out the best in opportunities. They blew it.

My son who is a second year in college at Grinnell has not been on campus in a year was asked to do research so allowed to go back on campus. I know this is not big in the scheme of events that has affected so many lives. I am a front line worker and have been given the opportunity to take care of very sick individuals at Mercy One Des Moines.

We celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary at 801. The service was great from the moment we arrived. Our server explained the menu well and answered every question. He checked in just the right amount and was very polite and helpful. We had multiple courses of food and every single course was jaw dropping. Our server gave us an appropriate heads up to order dessert so they had time to prepare. We loved the quiet and space between other groups and it felt very private and intimate.

The food and service were exquisite. We had a group of 7 and everyone enjoyed it immensely. Damon and his staff always knock it out of the park.

The most amazing restaurant I have been to in the Des Moines area. Super wait staff from the moment you enter to when you leave! The food is the most delectable and well plated food you could dream off. Full of flavor in every bite. If your in the area, special occasion, or just a date night keep 801 chop house at the top of your list!

We had a wonderful time at 801 on the 17th. Michael was our server and he lead us through a perfect dining experience starting with reviewing the menu and the specials fir the evening. Our wine was perfect temperature, our oysters were fresh, the escargot was buttery and delicious. I had the filet and my partner had the prime rib, both were cooked perfectly and melted in your mouth. Michael let us know the time on the soufflé so we ordered dessert while enjoying our main course. Honestly everything was perfect. The only item I would say could have used a bit more seare and flavoring was the foie that I added as a topper to my steak.

Overall absolutely wonderful experience. Ask for Michael, you’ll be glad you did.

I am a long time patron of 801, it is always dependably good and the environment is what you would expect in a fine dining establishment. My only complaint on this visit was that my dessert (chocolate cake) was obviously cut from a previously cut cake that had not been served from for several days or was not properly covered leaving the side of the slice very crusty and dry vs the rest of the cake. Definitely not what I would expect from a $13 piece of cake when all that would have been necessary is to sacrifice a partial slice and get to a moist piece.

The food, service and atmosphere were all outstanding!
I do not live in the area, but frequent 801 when I am.
Admittedly, a little pricey.

Food was good. Service was good but we were expecting a much quieter atmosphere! Very noisy!!! For the price we expected better atmosphere.

For the price of the meal (steaks) -very disappointing.

We had a fantastic meal - everything we ordered was great. This was topped off by great service. We talked when we got home and agreed that the meal couldn't have been better.

went during the week early evening had reservations but don' think we really needed them food was great service was just as good full sides are huge we would go back when we get back to Des Moines

Overall the service was great, food was amazing, and the desert was the best part. I loved how it is set up and can't wait to go back.
