My husband and I live in San Diego. I moved from Des Moines in 1989 and was in town
for my granddaughter's wedding. I treated my son and daughter-in-law for a nice night
out after they had put on such a fabulous wedding for their daughter. This is not something they can afford on their own so it was a lovely evening for them. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. If I have a criticism, it would be that you don't have a dress code. I really don't like sitting next to young people wearing shorts and baseball
caps backwards. They don't even have the manners to remove it indoors.
Excellent service and delicious food. A special place!
Excellent and delicious!
Amazing food and service as always.
Excellent experience as always. Service was top shelf & steaks were prepared perfectly. Always a great experience and our Anniversary dessert was delicious.
Can’t wait for our next visit.
The food was wonderful however we were there to celebrate our anniversary and our waiter could care less that we were there and it honestly felt as if they would have preferred we weren't there. We were the only people in their section for the first 30 mins of our meal and he was immediately cold and rude. We brushed this off, we thought maybe not everyone was as friendly. Then other people started to be seated in our section and the waiter was treating them completely different. Offering drink refills, asking them if they wanted the presentation on the different meat cuts, just being generally much more friendly. Once we finished our meal, he couldn't wait to bring us the check and get us out even though we wanted after dinner drinks. Overall, the food was good but the way we were treated wasn't worth the trip.
I had three friends and my girlfriend attend and discussed business and tried to have a good meal. The meals came out and appeared to be look delicious. We all ordered ours medium. I have dined numerous times at 801 and have always asked for medium cooked. Skip has always been a pleasure and checked on us in the past dinning experiences but the steaks were no medium but most of them were rare. Our waitress was very nice and helpful right up till the food came out and asked if everything looked good and got everything we ordered which was great. After cutting into the steaks and finding out they were more on the rare side we waited for our waitress to check back but didn’t so I went ahead and ate mine after waiting one friend cut out the rarest parts that look as if it was not cooked and was cold. One of the plates ordered a large bone in and the heat from the bone cooked it to a more suitable desire. The other friend ate some of it and my girlfriends was probably the worst and didn’t even get to eat it due to how rare it was. The waitress sent the manager over and I was shocked as to the customer service that he displayed and acted as if there was nothing wrong as he said the medium is a red warm center and I stated I had dined here multiple times and never had an experience like this with Skip and that I would seriously consider never coming back due to the lack of customer service on how we were treated. This was an unfortunate experience and I’m not to sure I will ever visit again due to it!
The food was delicious and the service was excellent the only drawback was the grilled asparagus was woody so you could only eat the top third of it
Fabulous oysters Rockefeller, great Ceaser salad and a butter soft, flavorful ribeye with cheesy hash browns. Who could ask for better. The service was top drawer. The Barman makes a great Manhattan!
It was good. We were right next to where the food was picked up by the servers and it got a little loud. The cooks and the servers sharing stories and things like that. A little too much for my liking. The food was good, not great. Especially for the price! Our waiter was very good. Stopped by many times to make sure everything was ok, and he was very helpful. Took very good care of us. Overall I'd say the experience was ok. My wife loved her steak, and also the hash browns. Scallops were a little watery inside. Oysters were good. Could have been more lobster in my soup though. We may give it another chance in the future. For $200 for 2 people I'd say it was a little above average. Would like to see more options on the menu, seafood-wise.
This was our third trip to 801 Chophouse - Des Moines and my 5th trip to 801 Chophouse across the country. The location in Des Moines is the best location for this restaurant and the team is exceptional the food is outstanding. Steaks cut and cooked perfectly and a team that makes a romantic evening enjoyable. Tables were very well spaced and we felt very comfortable and safe.
Beautiful setting, top service and the food was delicious.
Everything was perfect but would have rather not been seated by the bar to give a more high end view especially for the price we paid.
Best steak we’ve had since we moved to Iowa from Chicago!
It was for my son’s birthday. We had a wonderful time!
Excellent dining experience. Fantastic service and food.
Great steaks and an incredible ambiance to celebrate any occasion.
We celebrated a birthday. The service and good were excellent. I highly recommend 801 Chophouse. The food and service are always reliable and wonderful!
We were celebrating a birthday. Our server was most gracious and made our experience enjoyable.
Good food and atmosphere, the one disappointing thing was that I went to 801 to have a higher end dinning experience but several tables had people in shorts and t-shirts. I expect that at a run of the mill chain steak restaurant but feel that to provide a full high end experience there should be a requirement of no shorts or t-shirts allowed.
Our server Ryan was knowledgeable, helpful and a master of his craft. Best steak Ive had in years.
Best steak in town! Always look forward to date night here with my wife!
801 is a perfectly fine restaurant, good steaks and sides, but it's nowhere near as good as the price would suggest. 36oz porterhouse for two was probably well short of 36oz. No comparison to classic places like Peter Luger's or most any old-school steakhouses.
801 Chophouse is an absolute treasure! Tucked away in the beautiful 801 Grand building in the heart of downtown Des Moines, it is elegant and classy, yet welcoming and comfortable. The service is consistently outstanding - the devoted manager, the skilled and friendly bartenders, and the attentive servers deliver a top notch experience every time! Bravo, 801!!
It’s always a classic good time! Food is exquisite and worth any wait!
We had a lovely evening and appreciated the wonderful, attentive service!
We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary at 801! The food and service were superb! It was the perfect restaurant to make such a special occasion even more memorable!
We love 801! Their food and service is amazing. It is hands down the best steak that I’ve ever had! It is pricey, but oh so worth it!
Seems dated... Food really good but a bit pricey when I know we can get the same steak for 20 bucks less. I like the bar but the bartender wasn't very friendly and didn't seem aware when drinks were empty... But overall I like this place and will go back...
Because of COVID-19 we haven’t been to 801 Chophouse for a long time, we had a wonderful time! Everything we ordered was fabulous as usual!
We eat here whenever we are in Des Moines. It is one of our all-time favorite restaurants. Staff are friendly, great wine list. The only thing that could make it better for me is if the restaurant was on the top floor with views of the city.
My very favorite restaurant anywhere! Excellent food, service, and experience; thank you!
Everything was spot-on in regards to the food and service. They only fell short on the Blood-orange Manhattans. The bartender missed the mark, only slightly. (too sweet) But, we will for sure be back!
The waygu beef was not quite as good as I would have thought for price.
So happy to have this wonderful restaurant open for our son's birthday.
It’s usually always 5 stars
But just opening after COVID there were a
Few things not “normal” for us but we still love it and will be back again soon!
It was overall really good. My steak was charred on top and I didnt taste the garlic in mashed potatoes. I understand it was the first night back in a while and I totally get it.
The food was delicious! We were very full when we finnished.
801 was very good again. Food was perfectly prepared and presented. Service was on target. Nice evening.
