80 Thoreau is always outstanding—-it is our “go to” place for a special night out. All four of us had an exceptional experience from salad to dessert; it rivals (if not surpasses) many fine restaurants in Boston.

We missed the "A" team, who must have been busy at the new downtown restaurant.

Superior cuisine. Ambience is nice but could be a bit more informal. When the owners, whom I admire for their commitment to quality cuisine, are present, they hover a bit too much. 80 Thoreau needs to be lighter on It’s feet, not all suit and tie formality. That said, it’s a fine restaurant and we are regular patrons.

We received a gc for Christmas from
My husbands colleagues. It was a first time at 80 for all four of us. The setting is simple but beautiful and not stuffy at all but refined. Our chairs are really the only area for improvement (they were hard and not very comfortable) next time I would request a banquet.

We all had something different - I had salmon and it was some of the best I’ve had- another had the chicken, lamb, and my husband had the swordfish and he was pleased at how well it was was prepared - not the least bit dry but also not underdone.
We enjoyed beverages and desserts and they were all excellent - especially the peanut butter mousse.

We will definitely be back.

Lovely, quiet ambiance. Small point - the seating was very comfortable! We all ordered different entrees and everyone was pleased. First courses were also good. Lone exception - the salad was really bitter. We would definitely go back!

We tried swordfish and salmon that was excellent. The mushroom soap was tasty but heavy with cream. There was no vegetarian main dish in the menu and they had to create one.

My wife and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary. As soon as we were seated we were greeted with a complimentary champagne toast. A very nice surprise! Everything that we had from the appetizers to dessert was beautifully presented and very good including the coffee (something that is so often overlooked in many restaurants). The wait staff was very attentive and professional. We will be back!

Food is always solid. Had an excellent, well valued bottle of wine. Toughest part about coming here as a twosome is getting seated at the dreaded doubles row- side by side with other couples, spaced close enough for intimate conversation for four.

We came for Dine Out Boston and had a fabulous meal. Portions were generous. I loved the hint of mint and other flavors with the swordfish and also enjoyed the carrot cake. The celeriac-mushroom soup was a bit salty for my taste.

We have dined at 80 Thoreau many times over the last several years and it is always a pleasant experience. The quality and variety of the food is matched with an extensive but approachable wine list. The service is attentive but not intrusive. We look forward to the next visit.

the food remains excellent. the kitchen was quite slow in producing our selections and the restaurant was not that busy. this is the second time in a row that our dinners arrived very slowly (and a long wait after appetizer course). so I guess this is a trend. the food was great as always. service is ok it has been much better in the past - maybe it is the service in the front room is better than that in the back room by the kitchen !

This was our fifth visit to 80 Thoreau. This one was during Retaurant Week and the price and menu could not have been better. Their soups are always spectacular. Have never had a disappointing dish here.

Dine out Boston week. We had 5-6 choices for appetizer and entrees. The chicken liver mousse and salmon w white beans and oysters were delicious. Even the wine offered was an outstanding value. Love this place.

Amazingly good food: Creative and tasty for appetizers, main course, and dessert. Calming atmosphere and perfect friendly service. The duck was almost too good to eat. Can't wait to come back.

At first - Bad customer service experience when ‘manager’ wouldn’t find a way to offer a diabetic’s request for a fruit or sweet free dessert. After talking with another manager, the request was accommodated, a glass of wine was comped and service recovery happened. Pleased with final result.
Excellent food!

We did their Dine Out Boston 3 course dinner menu for $38. Outstanding. I thought the celeriac mushroom soup with Cider creme fraiche, brioche croutons was superb.

I said I would not recommend, this is based on my experience with this meal. The starter for my wife and myself were very good in line with our expectation of 80 Thoreau, as was the dessert. However, the main courses were both far below the usual standard of 80 Thoreau. I had the pork loin and belly which was impossible to compare to the same main course at Woods Hill table. 3 slices of very bland and dry meat that looked to have been carved at a deli. My wife felt the lamb was too salty and the risotto cake missed the mark, dry and bland. To accompany the lamb my wife had a glass of red which contained substantial sediment making the wine undrinkable at the end. The wine should not have been served like this, either decanted or filtered to avoid an unpleasant drink. I realise this was part of the Boston dine out, hence costs needed to be contained, but 80 Thoreau did not do itself justice with these offerings. It would have been better to maintain the standard and shrink the size of each course to give a taste of the quality of dinner at 80 Thoreau.

We started early - seated at 5:40 PM - we ordered, drinks arrived, apps came timely but then our entrees were not served until 6:55 PM. No one bothered to come by to see how we were doing - except to pour more water. This was restaurant week food so it should not have been hard - plus when my entree arrived - the Risotto - part was warm and part was not - I was so hungry I did not want to send it back.

Delicious meal and wonderful atmosphere. We had a great time celebrating with 80 Thoreau again and are looking forward to the next time we come back. Their portions aren't overwhelming, although we still ended up with leftovers and wanted to save room for their delicious desserts. Always a pleasure and definitely recommended!

We were surprised to find the menu limited to the fixe prix "Dine Out" promotion. That said, there were enough options to satisfy us. Our choices were all well prepared...seasoned perfectly, numerous sides, and hearty portions. Service was very attentive, and everyone was very pleasant.

I enjoyed exceptionally delicious swordfish during this visit. I had the chicken liver mousse appetizer, which was smooth, rich and light.

Being restaurant week, the menu was limited.
We've been to 80 Thoreau several times and always leave happy. (We'd go more often if it were less expensive. ) Service was gracious.

Along with Mooncusser, their sister restaurant in a Boston, 80 Thoreau provides excellence in dining every time. Terrific food, wines, service, comfort. They are my absolute go-to places. They should be yours, too!

We visited 80 Thoreau for the first time during Boston Restaurant Week. There was a good selection on the menu plus a nightly special. The wine selection was good, too. The lamb over risotto cake was vey flavorful but the duck confit served as the nightly special was disappointingly dry. The toffee pecan cake was a delicious end to the meal.

On a night when snow was expected as part of the 4th n'oleaster to hit the Boston area, we dined at 80 Thoreau. Earlier in the day we received an e-mail offering 50% off on all red wines, and noting an additional main course option (duck leg confit) that convinced us that it was worth the weather-related risk. I'm so glad we elected to have an early (5:30) dinner. All three of our courses (on the "Restaurant Week Boston 2018" special menu) were delicious, and we enjoyed a great, premier cru Red Burgundy!

This is a local restaurant for us and they had a Dine Out Boston menu. We were able to get a reservation, spur of the moment, and decided it was a good choice for us for a weekday evening meal. We were not disappointed - one swordfish and one roasted/braised chicken entree ordered and we were both pleased. First courses celeriac soup and bitter greens salad were also excellent. Nicely sized portions too for a cold winter night in March. Service was very attentive and much appreciated. We don't come here often, but I'm sure we'll be back.

We are never disappointed by the service or food here. Both are always top-notch. Food is creative and well-prepared, and presented attractively without being too over-the-top. Love the open kitchen that allows you to see Carolyn Johnson and her staff at work, or you can ask to sit in the seats that look right into the kitchen. Front of the house staff makes you feel welcome immediately, offering to take your coats. Great experience from start to finish every time we go.

Delicious meal in the front dining room. Tend to prefer the back which feels more intimate and romantic. A few candles would soften the space. Refined wines, lovely pairing of vegetables, herbs and proteins. A great dinner destination and attentive service. The menu is ever changing and original.

First courses were uniformly delicious-- soups and squid! Main courses were more uneven. The chicken was on the dry side, though quite flavorful and one of the party was pleased with a nice fish dish. Another was served something that she had made clear when ordering that she was unable to eat for medical reasons. This is often a great place for a meal, but tonight it was so-so.
