74 Main at Millstone
The food was very good!
My wife and I always choose the Millstone for birthdays and anniversaries. It's not cheap, but it's always very good.
I took my husband here for dinner (our first time at Millstone) and although the waitress was very friendly and gracious, we had heard Millstone was supposed to be a more upscale restaurant, we were surprised at the ambiance since it appeared like it may possibly have been another chain type of restaurant (Country Buffet type) with the wall sconces and booths resembling a more casual atmosphere.
The menu and special choices looked good and I had the swordfish special which was fine. My husband had the lobster bisque, we shared the pot stickers appetizer, he also ordered the surf/turf special. The "steak tips" for the special did not specify the cut of meat, so that may have been a clue we missed when ordering. It was not filet tips, more of a marinated skirt steak but the meat was literally raw and uncuttable. The waitress apologized and ordered another order of the steak portion but we were both done our meals for some time before it came out. We didn't eat the steak. We ordered cannoli's for desert which were fine. My husband said the lobster bisque was flavorful and ample lobster, yet the bisque was grainy. He was surprised to see his baked stuffed shrimp with the surf and turf smothered with the bisque as well, so the taste of the shrimp was non-existent from the bisque. So it was a little overkill on the bisque. The waitress gave us the "bday club" discount of $17.99, plus comped our cocktails, so this was appreciated.
We were there to meet friends we don’t see often enough. Everyone enjoyed their food and drinks. Our server was appropriately attentive and she was gracious with one member of our party we felt was feeling his liquor. A larger group near our table was disturbingly loud with percussive explosions of laughter now and then. It wasn’t the fault of the restaurant.
Food can be inconsistent, but our meal on Saturday evening was quite good. My sea scallops were cooked to perfection, as was my husband's swordsteak. His appetizer and dessert were equally delicious. I rated ambience a 3, since were were seated in the bar area. I would have preferred the dining room, but that would have entailed a 20 minute wait. Service was OK, but not great. I believe our location in the restaurant negatively impacted the level of service we received. Restaurant has a decent wine selection.
The location is pretty and pleasant. Our server, Sarah, was very attentive and helpful. The food came out in good time and was fresh and tasty. We had a long meeting - 3 hours - over lunch, and we didn't feel any pressure about the amount of time we took at the table. I would happily go back, and I would recommend Millstone at 74 Main to others.
Pleasant environment for family or couple, courteous and attentive waitstaff and timely presentation.
Great food and service!
We have been here before but the food this time was very disappointing. While my dinner was good, my husband and our friends got meals with beef. One had a steak with grizzel in it. One had prime rib that he said was tasteless. And one had the steak tips that was a very small portion for the price. While we may return for drinks and appetizers, we won't be back for dinner.
We liked the experience it’s nice having options. The wine menu is very good. Our waitress was attentive & there were no delays or problems at all. Our booth was in the corner which we prefer for noise reasons. This restaurant is our favorite in New London for these reasons and the consistency of quality.
As always they do not disappoint me! It was our 41st wedding anniversary and we knew we wanted a special dinner and we got it at 74 Main! Lovely evening.
My meal was disappointing. Prior to coming, I selected a meal from the menu provided online through OpenTable - the roast turkey dinner. I liked the reasonable price ($12) and was hungry for turkey. When I ordered that meal, the waitress told me it was not on their menu (old menu?), so I had to select from the other, pricier, items on the menu. I selected the veal Osso Bucco priced at $25. The meat was very tough, and I had difficulty chewing it. Eventually I ate less than a third of the meal, and gave up when I reached a piece that I simply could not chew, too tough and dry. The vegetables and noodles were thick with fat, which for me was distasteful (but perhaps because I usually eat vegetarian). The waitress gave me and my dinner guest complimentary desserts, but the tab was still more than $80 with tip. Much too expensive for the poor quality of my supper. I suspect I probably just had a bad piece of meat, and I know that happens, but the bottom line is that I will not be returning to 74 Main.
Always great! Of course, we'll be back.
But, they changed the menu the day we went so we had to regroup.
We have been here many times. Over the past couple of years we have found the food and the service to be consistently good or better. This time we did not think the food was quite up to our expectations, but it was still good.
We had a get together with friends. The waitress was very helpful and accommodating and the atmosphere was good for visiting. Very enjoyable evening
The food and service was amazing. We will definitely return in the near future.
Need more vegetarian meals on menu !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Richard and his team do an excellent job making all guests feel important. The food is quite good on a consistent basis.
This was our firat visit. Our daughter goes
to Colby-Sawyer College. We took her there for lunch to celebrate her birthday. This meal was the best we’ve had in New London. WIll definitely visit again.
The lunch specials ar 74 Main are always diverse and tasty. Consistently a great place to dine.
Very 80s decor... food was good but nothing special. Service was really friendly and the best part of the evening!
Always our group's go-to monthly lunch outing. Variety of specials combined with menu regulars means there are many possibilities to suit everyone's dietary needs and taste.
The wait staff and service here was exceptional. The food was good. Decor is dated.
Not for dinner in the D/R, maybe lunch.
Food was OK/Avg, everything was ok/Avg.
I left the Millstone very disappointed with my Anniversary/Valentines meal. We got the appetizer with Crab cakes (which were very small and mushy on the inside) the spring rolls (which were very bland) and one coconut shrimp (which was the only good thing I had). We also got the pierogis which seemed to have been microwaved or sat under a heat lamp because they were hard and tough. Entrée for me was the scallops. 6-8 very small, bland scallops thrown in a bowl with a handful of cherry tomatoes and a few grapefruit segments and a weird blob of butter. Not even on a bed of rice or pasta. No flavor and not at all worth the cost. My husband got the ribeye with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts. The potatoes were good but the cut of beef was terrible, with lots of fat and the Brussels sprouts were not good at all, they were in some sort of sauce which had thickened up and was cold. We had a few glasses of wine, one mixed drink, coffee and one dessert (which was good) and the meal came to approx. $150, plus a $30 tip. NOT at all worth the cost, especially since it was not only Valentines but also our Anniversary. The waitress was good, so the service was not a complaint. I had not been to the Millstones in years and will not be returning or recommending the Millstone as a result of that meal. I did not want to complain at the time since it was a special night out and didn't want to ruin the occasion for my husband and he felt the same, but after we got home it came out that we were both very disappointed with our meal. Also, the booth was very uncomfortable and I had a back ache by the time we left. I have never complained about a restaurant meal before but felt this was worth doing the review for since it was very poor and very disappointing in many ways.
We had asked not to be seated near the bar area, to avoid the noise and activity. We were pleased to be seated at a nice table in a corner far from the bar. Our waitress was friendly , pleasant, and accommodating throughout our meal.
Our food was prepared exactly as we asked and was brought at the appropriate time for a quiet slow paced meal and we were encouraged to take our time staying as long as we wished. We enjoyed ourselves immensely and will continue to dine at 74 Main.
Another excellent meal at 74 Main.
Enjoyable every time!
Salad done w/ fresh ingredients. Tried crab-stuffed sole and duck done two ways. Fish was generous portion, served hot, and nicely presented. Duck (dark meat done confit and breast seared) was good, but could have been excellent if cooked a few minutes less - I think the confit was done too far in advance. Extensive wine list. Service very good - there when you need it but not oppressive. Pricing was fair for entrees & service rendered.
We had dinner there the other night celebrating my husbands birthday. Food and service was excellent!
A New England snow storm was barreling down on us for the weekend, so we decided to go out for dinner, knowing we would be in for the weekend. We have been to 74 Main several times, and knew it would be good. It did not disappoint. Ambience, staff, and the food were great, as always. 74 Main is on our very short list of favorites.
Great place to go for good food, good service and good value. This is the go-to place for our Out To Lunch Bunch nearly every month.
As always, great food, service, and ambience.
Great menu and good service. Second trip to this restaurant and was well worth it.
New years eve....they were out of several specials by 7:30 and service was inattentive...boarding on rude. Too bad. Previous experience at 74 Main was positive...not this time!
We have been to 74 Main many times and have never been disappointed. Food, service & ambiance has always been top of the line.
Food took awhile to come out of the kitchen and half the dish (potatoes and Brussels sprouts) was under cooked. We returned both dishes to the kitchen and the dish was still undercooked and inedible. I would not recommend this place. I also asked for no bacon since I’m pescatarian and of course the fish dish I ordered was sprinkled with bacon! Good heavens!
The food was delicious. My brother and I had the Sea Scallops, served with small red potatoes cut in quarters. We felt the Potatoes were harder than usual, but still an outstanding meal. The Service was great as Debbie was very attentive to our needs.
We expected to the see the Owner, but he was probably having a burger.
Good food but not amazing. Waitstaff was attentive and pleasant. A bit pricy for the area.
We have been here many times and have usually had an excellent experience, but on this past visit the food was disappointing. Both the duck and lo main were less than tasty. Perhaps they are overloaded during vacation week.
