74 Main at Millstone Ratings and Reviews
New Years- our waitress was wonderful and very accommodating however they have a habit of having a different person bring your food out when it’s ready and the gal that bought it out, stomped up to the table and did a quick stop- she didn’t even know what was on the plates and we weren’t quite finished with appetizers and dishes weren’t cleared. The food was great, it just felt a bit rushed...
We are repeat customers at 74 Main. We are consistently happy with the level of service, the quality of the food, and the atmosphere of nice but not stuffy. Their menu provides the customer flexibility to create their own combination of choices, making every meal fresh and interesting.
My fish tacos were pretty good, but there was a 6", brown hair in one and I have short grey hair. The fruit crisp at the end was NOT crisp. It had partially cooked steel cut oats for the topping which was very chewy and not good. I did not eat it. The chocolate flourless tort was excellent as were the lobster dumplings and the broccoli cheese soup.
I order the lobster tacos (without the tacos) and they served it on slices of lettuce, which looked great. However, there were very few pieces of actual lobster in the dish. It was loaded with sliced onions (raw) and carrots, but there was very little lobster in the dish. My dining parter ordered the fish and chips, and his cod looked fine. He didn't eat the fries or cole slaw, but said that the fish was good.
We hadn't dined at the Millstone for quite a while due to our having sold a local condo in Newport, NH. Five years ago, however, we purchased another condo in Grantham, NH, actually farther away from the Millstone. Since we hadn't been there for a while, we decided to return to our old haunt and were we pleased we did. Apparently, it's under new management with a decidedly diner-oriented attitude. Our meals were superb especially the bourbon onion soup which we had as an appetizer along with some vegan pot stickers. The main courses were out of this world. Quite frankly, I can't wait until we have to return to our condo (it's presently rented) so that we can return to the Millstone.
Overall experience was wonderful ! Wait staff was in costume for Halloween , made for a fun evening. Our waitress was exceptional, made great suggestions, was friendly, professional and welcoming. Food was delicious . Would definitely go back when visiting the area again!
OMG and...OMG again! We eat out a lot, I'm 71 and hubby 72, we are sick of cooking!! We had to visit the area for our grandson's soccer weekend. I may or may not be back to that area but I will encourage anyone nearby or passing through or taking a nice drive for fun...STOP and eat! We about moaned with every bite we took from appetizers to dessert. Thank you for the experience and the memory!
PS We adored our waitress and I never got her name, so sorry. Long, lovely blonde hair and she's supposed to visit us in Maine sometime....you know who you are!
A group of tennis-playing women get together once/month for lunch "The Out To Lunch Bunch". We usually number around 12+. The menu at 74 Main has something (many 'somethings' actually) for everyone one of us. The fare ranges from light to something a bit heavier if that's what you're looking for. Some of the women actually take a 'hubby bag' home. They are very accommodating with separate checks and they try to give us plenty of space so that we don't feel as if we are disturbing other diners. The kitchen is very adept at getting all the meals out together.
We were vacationing in New Hampshire this fall and stayed at a B&B in New London. This restaurant was recommended to us and we were very pleased with our dinner. It was quite busy that n night so we were glad we had a reservation. My husband had the turkey dinner and thought it was quite good but that the potatoes/dressing had a lot of garlic in them. I had the scallops and they were perfectly prepared. But the highlight of the dinner wad the carrot salad. Absolutely delicious!
Great for after theater (730 pm) dinner with friends. Imaginative appetizer tomato/mozzarella/golden beets. Nightly special swordfish cooked and served fresh mussels/shrimp/pesto/tasty broth over fingerling potato. Flourless chocolate torte with raspberry to die for
While the service was good, it seemed the kitchen was trying to do too much with each dish. One of our appetizers and both entrees had competing flavors that did not compliment each other and overpowered the dish. The ingredients they used were delicious, so it would be great if they just let those shine more.
New chef at 74 Main...excellent choices on the lunch menu. All eleven of us were more than happy with our choices (mine was a very light, delicate lobster salad with arugula, avocado dressed with a light citrus vinaigrette dressing on brioche toast...lots of lobster!).
Don't understand what happened. We were seated promptly, and service flowed until halfway through our entrees when the wheels fell off the wagon. Second round of drinks never delivered; request for water refill went unanswered. Servers were busing as well as serving tables. Where was the Manager???
We had a huge group and then had a surprise of a few more! The Millstone handled us beautifully! The food was delicious. The service was attentive and friendly. The garden was a lovely place for young children to play. It was a wonderful pre-theatre dinner for our group.
This was one of the worst dining experiences I have had in recent memory. It took us over 20 minutes to get our drinks. And then it took over 30 minutes from when we finished appetizers until we got our entrees. During this time, we only saw our waitress three times and she was completely inattentive. Over a half dozen parties came in after us and finished their meals and left before we even got our entrees. To top it off, I ordered my steak medium rare and it was well done and my wife's salmon was raw. At that point, we just asked for our check.
Excellent restaurant. Nice decor, good service. Pleasant staff. Food was very good. We had the braised cod and the scallops. Nicely presented. Wine list is very large with some very expensive wines but also a good selection of everyday wines. Very good selection of wines by the glass.
The desserts are to die for, recommend sharing one between two people.
We have been here before and enjoyed our first experience. On July 12th, my wife and I celebrated her birthday, as well as our anniversary. My wife really likes ribs, and on our first visit, they were "fall off the bone" tender. However, on July 12th, the ribs were quite tough. This was quite a disappointment to my wife, and the restaurant didn't seem to want to give us a discount or an apology. My meal, the local chicken with potatoes and green beans, was very good.
Our server was very efficient and friendly, and we enjoyed being next to the window, looking out on the beautiful flower garden.
Passing through New London on way home to Boston, we stopped here for dinner. The food was as good as any we've had at fine restaurants in the city. Fish and vegetables cooked to perfection, with well-developed flavors in everything. The broth in the summer vegetable soup was intensely delicious. Our server was friendly and attentive, but never intrusive. Loved it!
I came with my mother mid-afternoon on a Sunday, and we each had the lobster benedict on gluten-free toast. The dish arrived with home fries, bacon, and fresh fruit, and the whole thing was spectacular -- perfectly delicious and cooked just right. Our server was fabulous, too.
We were here for Father's Day with a party of eight. GREAT service, food was very good - two errors that were sent back but and fixed right away - no questions! Really nice dining room towards the back that overlooks a beautiful garden. VERY happy - we will return.
