We had a wonderful Valentine's meal from the special menu prepared by the chef. Three days later, my husband is still talking about the rabbit, mushroom ricotta dumplings he had as a starter course. We loved every bite of each course and we'll definitely be back again. Thank you for the terrific service too!
My wife and I went here for a Valentine's Day dinner day. The food was exquisite. We had their Brussels spouts, duck, rabbit, coulette, and a couple of desserts. The atmosphere was very vibrant and the service was great. I would definitely recommend this place for a nice date night or special occasion. They also offer complimentary valet parking which was a plus.
This was our 2nd visit in 6 months and I doubt if we will return. Everything was just so so. With such a vibrant Charleston food scene, we expected more. We were early on a Friday night. Dining room empty. Service mediocre (not attentive despite low volume, forgot that I ordered soup). Cheese snack boring. Fish seasoned well but beans too salty and acidic. Duck was excellent. Nice seat in window. Quiet.
-Server Ben was terrific
-Clam chowder was very good.
-very limited menu
-Wreckfish was a little tough and the only fish on the entree menu.
-Double cheeseburger was good.
-Steak special (medallions of beef) was tiny
-No bread was served or available so we ordered the Foccacia bread was much too large and over buttered for someone who just wanted a little bread to holdover for dinner
We loved the upstairs dining room with its rustic finish and quiet, spacious comfort. Everything we ate was delicious and well-prepared. Service was phenomenal. Our waiter patiently answered all of my questions without once making me feel like "that person", and we were able to converse without screaming. We told our waiter, so sorry I forgot his name, that we had theater tickets and he promptly reminded us when it was time to leave. Lovely evening.
492 has been on our list to try for several months. restaurant week gave us the opportunity to try three courses for $45. We were very pleased with the quality of food and the excellent service from our waiter Brian. The wreck fish was amazing and the chocolate budino was a great way to finish the meal. We will defintely go back to try more of the interesting dishes on the menu.
We arrived about 30 minutes prior to our reservation time so we could enjoy a few drinks at the bar. I ordered the fireside chat for my partner who enjoys a drink on the stronger side and the apple cocktail for myself. It had a rosemary sprig in it which made it very refreshing, especially as I drank it down. We were originally sat upstairs, but I didn't like the ambiance up there...it was too quiet so I requested that we sit at the chef's counter so we could see the action. The food was really good. I got the scallops to start, the duck as an entree, and the lemon cake for dessert. The scallops were delicious..I was literally scraping the dish trying to get all the sauce. The duck was very tender, the fat melted in my mouth and reminded me of bacon if there ever was a bacon tenderloin. I don't even like cake, but the cake I had was so good and I was able to speak with the wine guy of the place and he suggested a pairing (it was a reisling) which was perfect. It was the second time going for me, and they didn't disappoint.
We were sat on time with a party of 6 upstairs, and it was all down hill from there. After sitting for 10-15 min and being served water our server finally came to get our drink order. We placed our drink order, and forcibly placed an order for starters. It took over 20 minutes for our cocktails to come out, and another 5-10 for the 2 bottles of wine that were ordered at the same time as the cocktails. Our starters came after a while however, they were missing 2, which the server said he rang in as entrees. So two of us had starters and entrees at the same time. Eventually our entrees came out to everyone's underwhelment. Some of the groups entrees were cold. We had Duck, Halibut, Beef Cheeks, the T-Bone, as well as the smaller steak option. Portions were disappointing when you are paying 30 and up for entrees.
This was our second New Year’s Eve dinner there and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Loved the craft cocktails and we split the large T-bone steak which was perfectly cooked. The Italian green beans were very good, but the Radicchio Beet Salad with Smoked Eel was out of this world! That was a show stopper for us! Wonderful desserts rounded out a great evening.
First time visiting, we had a great experience. Food was tasty - traditional but with a few twists. E.g., potato soup with roe, surprisingly good celery salad, perfectly grilled fish. I also like the big chairs for tables of two; they give a neat ambiance and sense of privacy amid the more traditional group tables..
The celery salad and the glass of rose wine were perfect. The scallops were ok - there were only 2 of them. My husband's lamb was dry and the potato soup was not eatable. Somebody must have dropped the salt shaker in the soup - and we like salt. The last time we ate at 492, it was very good. We won't be back. There are too many excellent restaurants in Charleston.
Our third visit here, and while the menu has changed from just tapas to a more traditional approach, the food was still all very creative with very unique combination of ingredients that I have not witnessed elsewhere. Recommended for foodies who are interested in a unique experience.
We brought a couple out-of-towners who enjoyed the 492 experience....we are new to the area.
All in our party would have recommended more choices to the menu. Additionally, it would have been nice to know there was aa valet service close by - I don't recall seeing that on the website.
492 is a great looking restaurant, great hostess, excellent first impression. We sat at the counter in the back where we were able to watch the show in the kitchen and engage with others and share opinions on various menu item. Highly recommend sitting back there. It is like watching a well orchestrated show and the kitchen is absolutely spotless. The team clearly takes great pride in preparing and plating the dishes.
There are definitely some interesting and original menu items. We eat out a lot and needed to google a lot of the ingredients. Our waiter was able to answer all our questions. Personally, I would love to see a page explaining what those uncommon items are.
We ate casually, focaccia, Serrano ham and a shared burger. All excellent. The dishes coming out of the kitchen will have us coming back.
I took a star from the service only because I felt the waiter could have been a little more attentive and he delivered our check before we asked for it and without asking if there was anything else we wanted. Minor, but a basic.
Highly recommend and will return.
We came , with another couple,to Charleston from Chevy Chase, Md. for the weekend. Of all the restaurants where we are, I’d rate 492, the best. The atmosphere , the service, and most especially, the food were the best in town! I’ve already recommended it to my nephew and his wife who will be visiting Charleston in 2 weeks! Great job, 492!
