So sad to say, but 4-5-6 Fish failed to live up to our expectations this time. In the past, food has always been excellent with stellar service. We were there pre theater, so perhaps the problem, but food was okay and certainly not up to their usual standards. Service, while friendly, was poor. I feel certain our waiter was handling just too many tables at the same time. We arrived at 4:45 for a 6:30 show, and ended up having to gulp down our food that arrived at 5:50 in order to make the show. Everything arrived at the same time ~~ salads, appetizers, and entrees. Caesar salad was tasteless, crab cakes were overcooked (coating was hard, not crispy), veggies were wilted from sitting too long, and no refills or requests to order more drinks (our glasses were empty for quite awhile, and we all wanted to order additional wine). Our order was not complete, and we had to ask for missing items. We asked three times for an additional plate to share one of our salads, but the additional plate never did arrive. We were told the salad was large enough to share, but it was pretty skimpy, so it was just as well that the additional plate was not provided. Did it ruin our experience? No, but certainly not what we expected from this restaurant. Would we go to 4-5-6 again and give it another try? Yes! But never again pre theater!
The atmosphere was really cozy and fun to start. The brunch mimosas were outstanding and only $3 each! Then the food arrived---absolutely fantastic. Will be going back for sure.
We were in town visiting for an event and decided to go into town for dinner. It had a good rating and we wanted seafood. The parking is not easy in that area so unless you want to walk I would use the valet which worked well. The appearance inside is very nice and conducive to fine dinning. The music was very loud for the first 20 minutes so much so that it was hard to have a conversation at the table although the music selection was great. They, without our asking, lowered the music to an acceptable level, so someone else must have noticed too. The waitress was somewhat slow and they were not busy (St. Patrick's Day). The Caesar salad was good but not great. The tuna taco second course was fantastic/excellent. The lobster mac and cheese entree was good but not the best I've had. The fish entrees ( Mahi Mahi and Rockfish) were well prepared and tasty. The freshly made butter was excellent. The dessert menu looked good but we passed. Overall, I would give it a 3.8, rounded up to a 4.
As a plus, 456 held our reservation since traffic caused us to be 15 minutes late. The minus was waiting 20 minutes for our drinks. After inquiring on our food, it was brought out 1 hr and 15 min after our order. Fish had obviously been under a heat lamp as it was over cooked and tough. The menu was limited and titled show menu. Most were attending a show starting at 7:30. The value relative to the price, product and service was low.
Having been dozens of times over the years, something is slipping. I say this with love and hope for improvement. I know Mr. Zoby recently passed and I wonder whether the restaurant is under new management. Very slow service (we had to skip desert), inedible crab soup from excessive shell, and overcooked, dry shrimp. This was my first visit where everything was less than perfect. I know it was a theater night, but it usually is downtown. I did not recognize a single face from the front house crew, and it obviously was not the same chef. Keeping my fingers crossed for one more try.
We were there in an exceptionally busy theater night. A special theater menu was provided. Our server did not know if the bar had prosecco or Corona beer and did not seem well-informed about the special theater-goers menu. My husbad’s choice, crab stuffed flounder over mashed potato was mostly potato, and tasted ‘instant’. The restaurant has a nice ambiance, is convenient for theater-goers, but that night the wait was long, the service spotty, and the food just so-so
Service very slow, don’t go before a show. Food was just okay, prices high, they even charge extra for crackers on appetizer. We won’t return
The food was good, but some very rich like the she crab soup, there is no salt or pepper on the table but the waitess did have crushed pepper. The prices are much higher than expected, definitely higher than $. They had a choice of just 2 fish, rockfish and salmon. Disappointed by the lack of choices on the menu.
Pre theater dinner with friends, restaurant did a great job keeping us on track so we could have a leisurely dinner and being on time for our show
GREAT!!! Service, food, ambiance was all superb
First time in years I have been to 456 and had a really poor meal. Special was fish. It sounded delicious on the Theater menu....paired with orzo.. Fish was really dry from being overcooked and orzo had no taste. I paired it with a Ceasar salad. The romaine was too chopped up (very very small pieces) and although I don't normally eat them, I did try one and the croutons were not fresh tasting. Fried Shrimp were small and dry on the inside and oily on the outside, probably due to over cooking. The stuffed flounder was dry and not fresh tasting. Rolls were the brown and serve kind out of a package, not crisp on the outside or even remotely warm inside or out and relatively gummy. Seemed as if they were pulled from the package and served. The one bright spot in our meal was the lima bean soup, which was delicious. I'm really sad because I have always counted on this restaurant to be consistently good and 4 of 4 of us were incredibly disappointed (except of course for the soup). When I was asked about where we went, other friends chimed in that they have had similar experiences lately and some will not return. We have a history with this restaurant and hate to see it decline.
The food was what one might expect from a large chain restaurant. We had calamari as our appetizer and it was just ok. Served to us in a paper cone as if we were at the local bar. Our entrees were very bland and had been sitting for quite some time before being served. We expected a little more of a higher end place but we were definitely disappointed. They do have a dress code which is in no way enforced. We won’t go back and won’t recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Went before the Robert Plant concert. 6PM reservation, not very busy. Seated by the water-wall that obviously was very clean because it smelled like Clorox. Server was friendly but not attentive - example: didn't have a fork for my main course. Food was meh: Crab cake app - pretty good. Hummus plate - pretty good. Caesar salad - you charge HOW MUCH for THIS? Creole Grouper - eaten by two people who had the same comment - "Where's the Creole, and how about cooking it 5 minutes less?" According to our server, the menu was a "theater menu" - meaning easier food to prepare and get out, which would explain why the fish was so-so warm and overcooked. Or not.
In summary, no, I would not go back, although my friend said "Maybe again as long as someone else pays!" As my father-in-law says: "now that we've been here, we don't have to come back!" I'll stay in my Beach zip code -
The food and service were good. The bread pudding was amazing.
They have the best fried oysters in town! Juicy inside and lightly breaded to a fine crisp! Also had the scallop appetizer and calamari.
The calamari was the best too!
We had a great server who always gives his best! They also have terrific single malt scotch and wine choices . The decor is very sharp and they have valet parking .
Great place and everything is always wonderful ! You can dress up if you want or dine casually .
Amazing from start to finish. Our server, Zack was exceptional and made sure our anniversary celebration was memorable.
Wait staff was on point, however on a Theater night, the wine I requested should not have been sold out. It's not a hard wine to keep on hand, I had to get a half bottle, which was ok, but I would have preferred the choice I wanted..
The food was delicious. The wine selection was very good and priced well. We were greeted warmly, the reservation was retrieved and we were seated immediately. Service was very good. We will return.
A bad experience. We had tickets for a 7:30 pm show at a venue two blocks away. Reservations were at 5:45. We arrived a few minutes early. At that time the restaurant was not busy. A few minutes after we were seated, people were seated at the next table.
We ordered she-crab soup and entrees. The soup took too long to arrive and was mediocre. The next table received their appetizers before we did.
The next table received and finished their entrees. We were still waiting for ours.
At 6:45, we still had not received our meals. I realized that we no longer had enough time to eat, pay, and walk to the theater. I notified the hostess that we were leaving and to cancel our order. She called the manager, who told me the food was being plated. I told her we didn't have time to eat. Rather than apologizing for the slow service, she chose to debate the issue. She said the reason the other table received the entrees first was because they hadn't ordered appetizers. When I told her that they had, in fact, ordered appetizers, she then claimed that their appetizers took less time to prepare. She also said that the theater was only a 2 minute walk. I then pointed out that one of our party was an older person who had to walk slowly.
Altogether, a poor "dining" experience.
I absolutely love this restaurant. I am never disappointed in the food or the service. This was a first time visit for my dinner companion. She cant wait to visit again
I was seated promptly for my reservation. The waiter was very charming and courteous. Unfortunately, it took a while to receive food and no one notified us until it finally arrived. It was not busy for a Sunday evening, but apparently they ran out of supplies. My dates appetizer was missing ingredients, which we sent back and they fixed. I’m sure only because we noticed and notified. We received dinner almost an hour after ordering it, one of the managers told us that there had been an issue and apologized.
The place has nice scenery and the workers are courteous but for the prices I would expect a bit better service. The food taste is also nothing out of the ordinary. This is my second time attending, first was during restaurant week about a year ago. 456 Fish is not apart of my top 5 choices in Norfolk for dining. I have only attended dinner meals though. For the experience or if you’re simply trying to impress someone because of the high prices I recommend at least trying once.
We've previously enjoyed 456 Fish but feel it has changed in our last couple of visits. Two of us ordered the she crab soup and had to pick shell pieces from our bowls. The waiter/kitchen mixed up our order and one in our party had to wait for her dish while the rest of us were served. I was told the crab cake (crab balls?) Were mostly filler and not very good. There was a mix up with the checks and then that had to be resolved. It all worked out in the end, and we got to the show on time, but it wasn't as pleasant an experience as it should have been.
Waiter was excellent & got us out in time for show.
Limited menu and out of 2 options at 6:30. Waited over an hour for dinner, which was ok but nothing special. One entree did not come with the sides ordered. Would not go back!
Do not go on theatre night. Service was pitiful. Food came out 10 minutes before we needed to leave! Waitress offered us a doggy bag!Calamari was cold and flavorless. Ran out of NY strip. We were late for the show.
Went before the theater. Arrived before our 6 pm reservation and got seated promptly. Took so long to get the main course that we had to rush through and ask for our bill while still eating it in order to get to 7:30 performance at the Chrysler. Waitress never apologized for the excessive time between salad and entree. We were not the only ones in this situation. Do NOT recommend for pre-theater dinner. Go when you have lots of time and whatever you do, order appetizer and/or salad or you'll stave before your dinner arrives!!
Brunch was, with one exception, excellent. It was restaurant week and the restaurant was very busy. Our server apologized for not being able to provide as much attention as he would have liked.
The food was quite good, particularly the Edwards sausage and buscuit. However the eggs Benedict were over cooked (no runny yolk) and scant on the Hollandaise sauce (but more was provided after asking twice).
The deal killer was the O'Brien potatoes. The first bite was so full of grit, I had trouble getting it all out of my mouth and teeth. The good news is that the chef uses real potatoes (not a frozen mix), but they need to be washed better to remove the field dirt.
We returned in January for the downtown restaurant week. We both started with the crab soup which had a lot of lump crabmeat in it. Since the crab cakes were so good the last time we ordered them again and they were just as delicious. We also ordered the pan seared grouper with fried sweet plantains. It was exceptional. Both of us had the chocolate mousse for dessert. It was just the right size to top off such a filling meal without over doing it and we savored every bite. Some restaurants serve smaller portions during restraint weeks, but these were the normal sized portions. We have been telling everyone about it.
We come here often before a show at the Chrysler. The service, food, ambience is always top-notch! Even though it was a busy Restaurant Week we were able to choose from the menu and we’re able to modify the main course for our desires. The service was superb.
Enjoyed the evening very much. Service was excellent even though the restaurant was very busy.
Went there for restaurant week dinner. The calamari was very good. The bread was good. The waiter served the bread to us. I had to ask him for another piece..he didn't check to see if we wanted any more. The fish entree had good favor but was overcooked.
The crab cakes are a particular specialty; the she-crab soup is in a class by itself. The staff takes service very seriously, and delivers it; a great date night venue.
Disappointed Food was a little overpriced.
Had text my reservation in and informed them it was special occasion( Wife’s Birthday) they didn’t even recognize this, nor asked. Most places give the Birthday reciepient a complintary dessert or something. Didn’t even get a simple “happy birthday”. What’s the point of asking if it’s a special occasion if you are not going to recognize it! One and done with this place!
First time in Norfolk and found this place on open table. We wanted seafood, so tried this place. Yummy Crab Cakes! Great service!
Food was delicious. Staff was very polite and attentive.
Just wonderful. We loved every bite, the nice waiter and the water interest. Thank you.
Excellent meal all-around!
Loved it overall but pasta very very salty. Manager and team were very understanding.
Took my mom to have brunch before a show. Nathan was our waiter.
He was new, sweet and very attentive.
Food was a little slow coming out but was worth the wait.
Will be back.
The food was incredible and service was impeccable. We will definitely go back.
