43 North took over space at 108 King Street in Madison, Wisconsin in 2010 replacing another restaurant. The name is derived from the latitude of the location. The d�cor is very trendy with dark purple booths that are both inviting and comfortable. A specialty and nice touch at 43 North is the ability to order either half or full-size portions of the entr�es offered.

A few notable favorites on the menu at 43 North are lobster bisque, duck confit salad, hachis parmentier, cassoulet of lamb leg, Wagyu steak and game hen. Additionally, each diner is presented with a complimentary small slice of coffee cake to conclude the meal.

What an awful experience. We booked the restaurant a month ago, and we even get a reminder only to turn up at the restaurant to see a sign that says "closed indefinitely due to plumbing issue" - ok, I understand accidents and unforeseen circumstances happen, but the restaurant has a record of bookings, my details are on it, and so they HAVE AN OBLIGATION to call to say, we are closed so find somewhere else !! How easy to do think it was to find an available table for 3, on a Saturday night, in Madison, the day of a Wisconsin Badgers home game ????? You utterly ruined our evening.

Unfortunate 43North was closed for repairs but OpenTable allowed us to book a table. We didn't know until we arrived on Saturday night at prime time find that we were out of luck. We love this resturant so we will return but somehow we should have been told.

Service was excellent. Ambiance was nice for our anniversary. The stuffed dates for an appetizer were great and the lemon thyme posset for a dessert was delicious and refreshing. Everything else was decent but just missing a little something. Not very strong flavors, which we prefer.

I think the another server (not ours) made some sort of comment regarding us coming there for the Happy Hour discount to another server. Not sure if it was negative or not, but it sort of sounded negative. Keep in mind that the restaurant has a happy hour in order to attract customers. Servers shouldn't be making negative comments if they want the customer to come. And realistically, whatever discount we get we usually give back to our server anyways. This was on Saturday night 6/11/16. In any case, we liked our food. Too bad no more beef carpaccio.

We like that there are smaller portions--makes it easier to have room for dessert. Fun eclectic food! Above average beverage selection. Wonderful !!

The game hen was breaded, over-cooked and non-descript to the point it could have been chicken or pork for all we knew. The gnocchi were tasteless rubber and the mushrooms were overcooked. But what really made this plate a noteworthy failure was this gawdawful sweet caramel gravy. What a horrible combination.

The Wyagu steak was an awesome cut, perfectly cooked. The mushrooms and mustard greens were very well seasoned and complimented the steak beautifully.

The stuffed date appetizer was cloying and obnoxious. Far too much date for the paltry amount of stuffing. We rescued the meager stuffing and ate it with small portions of the largely uneaten dates. This was an improvement but barely passable. This menu item should be completely re-evaluated.

The bottle of merlot-cabernet wine we ordered was scarcely better than 3 buck chuck. Way over-priced for the quality.

Worst of all is the atmosphere. All hard surfaces and glass. With a full head count, this raised all the conversations to shouting. It was all but impossible to think, let alone carry on a reasonable conversation. For gods sake put some sound absorbing materials high on the walls and the ceiling.

But then again, don't bother. Other than the steak, the food won't draw us back. It is easy to find far better meals in Madison for the $100 (including tip) that this cost us.

The server was very competent and was tipped appropriately because the food was not his fault.
