About Permanently Closed - 43 North
This restaurant is permanently closed.
43 North took over space at 108 King Street in Madison, Wisconsin in 2010 replacing another restaurant. The name is derived from the latitude of the location. The dcor is very trendy with dark purple booths that are both inviting and comfortable. A specialty and nice touch at 43 North is the ability to order either half or full-size portions of the entres offered.
A few notable favorites on the menu at 43 North are lobster bisque, duck confit salad, hachis parmentier, cassoulet of lamb leg, Wagyu steak and game hen. Additionally, each diner is presented with a complimentary small slice of coffee cake to conclude the meal.

43 North - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
What an awful experience. We booked the restaurant a month ago, and we even get a reminder only to turn up at the restaurant to see a sign that says "closed indefinitely due to plumbing issue" - ok, I understand accidents and unforeseen circumstances happen, but the restaurant has a record of bookings, my details are on it, and so they HAVE AN OBLIGATION to call to say, we are closed so find somewhere else !! How easy to do think it was to find an available table for 3, on a Saturday night, in Madison, the day of a Wisconsin Badgers home game ????? You utterly ruined our evening.
Unfortunate 43North was closed for repairs but OpenTable allowed us to book a table. We didn't know until we arrived on Saturday night at prime time find that we were out of luck. We love this resturant so we will return but somehow we should have been told.
Service was excellent. Ambiance was nice for our anniversary. The stuffed dates for an appetizer were great and the lemon thyme posset for a dessert was delicious and refreshing. Everything else was decent but just missing a little something. Not very strong flavors, which we prefer.
I think the another server (not ours) made some sort of comment regarding us coming there for the Happy Hour discount to another server. Not sure if it was negative or not, but it sort of sounded negative. Keep in mind that the restaurant has a happy hour in order to attract customers. Servers shouldn't be making negative comments if they want the customer to come. And realistically, whatever discount we get we usually give back to our server anyways. This was on Saturday night 6/11/16. In any case, we liked our food. Too bad no more beef carpaccio.
The game hen was breaded, over-cooked and non-descript to the point it could have been chicken or pork for all we knew. The gnocchi were tasteless rubber and the mushrooms were overcooked. But what really made this plate a noteworthy failure was this gawdawful sweet caramel gravy. What a horrible combination.
The Wyagu steak was an awesome cut, perfectly cooked. The mushrooms and mustard greens were very well seasoned and complimented the steak beautifully.
The stuffed date appetizer was cloying and obnoxious. Far too much date for the paltry amount of stuffing. We rescued the meager stuffing and ate it with small portions of the largely uneaten dates. This was an improvement but barely passable. This menu item should be completely re-evaluated.
The bottle of merlot-cabernet wine we ordered was scarcely better than 3 buck chuck. Way over-priced for the quality.
Worst of all is the atmosphere. All hard surfaces and glass. With a full head count, this raised all the conversations to shouting. It was all but impossible to think, let alone carry on a reasonable conversation. For gods sake put some sound absorbing materials high on the walls and the ceiling.
But then again, don't bother. Other than the steak, the food won't draw us back. It is easy to find far better meals in Madison for the $100 (including tip) that this cost us.
The server was very competent and was tipped appropriately because the food was not his fault.
43 North was pretty empty - on a relatively busy Saturday night (granted, the weather was bad, but most restaurants in downtown Madison were booked that same night). I'm not sure what their culinary "voice" was supposed to be, but it came across as high-end hotel, which is unfortunate. I guess one could say "competent," but that's as far as I would go. The service was confused (and staff looked visibly bored), we never saw a manager, and the galley floor layout really isn't suited to what they're trying to be or do. Without clear vision, execution, or leadership, it's a utility "nice restaurant" that you could go to for a date, a little too awkwardly intimate (and purple) for a business dinner, but it doesn't stand out for cuisine, ambiance, or experience. I get a clear sense of living on borrowed time.
I returned to 43 North after a couple of years not having been there, as it isn't local for me. As with my previous visits, I found the food to be fantastic, the service excellent, and the ambience charming. While the menu is a bit limited, we found that everything we ordered was delicious. The scallops, in particular, are worth the trip in and of themselves.
My fiance and I celebrated our engagement here in the private dining area with our guests. I highly recommend reserving this area for a group, especially if it for a special occasion. The food was delicious; we went with an array of entrees to split with the group to give it more of a tapas feel to it. Last, but not least, our server did an excellent job in regards to recommending food selection and of course bringing out champagne when we arrived.
Beautiful atmosphere and wonderful music( not to loud where you can't have a conversation). The wait staff was gracious( Andrea ) and the food was delicious and the way it was prepared made your mouth water before eating it. The roasted dates, lobster bisque soup, and the crispy duck leg was like a beautiful symphony in my mouth. Perfect setting for date night or an anytime dinner. Check out the happy hour, 30% off everything...just when you thought it couldn't get any better.
I was very pleased to try a restaurant recommended by more than one friend. The food was great, although I did not love my steak. I was surprised and very happy that there were few other customers so that I was able to reconnect with a relative I hadn't seen for many years. I would definitely come again.
We enjoyed our evening and would tell others to try 43 North but some things were different this time. The new menu is not as good as the former menu. The small size salmon was almost invisible. They made a mistake with my salad but immediately apologized and offered to make a new one. I told them I didn't mind (timing is everything when you're with a group) so they comped it. Very nice touch. The whole experience, however, was mediocre which was too bad because we brought friends to try them out and we've always been strong fans of this restaurant. Hopefully they'll think a bit more about portion sizes, pricing and menu offerings. Our server seemed well trained and empowered - speaks well of the establishment.
43 North can be counted on for great service and a solid menu. The cocktail drink menu is fun. This visit we were seated in a back room away from the main floor. Intentions were good to make this a quiet space, but the music was loud and the room is next to the restaurant's back door. It got pretty cold every time a customer came or left the restaurant. I would have preferred to be seated at a candlelit table in the main area of the restaurant.
Great restaurant. We have dined there a few times and all of our meals have been excellent. On our most recent visit, the salmon was outstanding, vegetarian option was fine. Flan for desert was lovely. Location is perfect, a little out of the way spot near the Capital. Fun to watch the food being prepared while dining.
We went for the lobster bisque, and will return for the lobster bisque. It was not at all busy during our 7:30pm reservation, providing a very intimate setting. The waiter was fantastic, very attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about their craft. Well done!
Went after not going for a couple years. Used to be our favorite restaurant. The food was terrible. We had 2 kiddos in tow. The meal took over 2 hours! And not because we were enjoying ourselves. They kept saying the apps/salad/dinner would be right out... 30-45 minutes later and then things arrived. Dinner for me was scallops (overcooked) with BEANS? and Crispy kale which mixed together was odd and not tasty. Everything was bland. Had to ask for salt for everything. The steak was served with a cauliflower purée that was interesting in a bad way. The only thing we liked was the unique Cesar salad which hasn't changed in years. Not going back...
Enjoyed 25th wedding anniversary with my wife on our first visit to 43 North and glad we did. Food was wonderful and our server, Andrea was engaging. One of only 2 couples dining that evening, so romantically quiet. Plate presentation lovely. Roasted dates as an app should have been a shared dessert with brandy pairing (Asbach Uralt?) but all else very nicely done. We'll be back!
43 North has improved greatly over the past 6 months. We have been patrons here since they've opened and always liked it. Now we love it! The hen is consistently fantastic and the lobster bisque is also wonderful. Our son likes the Wagu steak and I like the salmon. My salmon this time was slightly cool and undercooked but not worth a complaint tonight. Other than this little hiccup, The problems in past with Luke warm food has appeared to resolve itself. Fresh baguettes with herbed butter and homemade lavender jelly is a nice combination. Keep the great food coming and keep the entree's hot!
Madison's downtown contains so many fine restaurants that it is hard to pick just one or two to top the list, but 43 North consistently stays in the top position each time we dine there. I can't say enough about the quality of the food and the excellence of the wait staff. I only wish that it wasn't quite such a well-kept secret, because I want this restaurant to be around for a very long time. It deserves to have patrons lining up at the door for its excellent cuisine, service, and ambiance.
Wanted to have a great night out with good conversation, quiet, excellent food, and a room with a view. The two of us had an appetizer, small plate dinners, split a dessert, and consumed delightful spirited beverages--including beer and wine. Book the back room for a more intimate place! Service was great, with a smile--We were well-taken care of. If you get there for happy hour during the week, the dinner is 30% off. And a parking voucher is available for parking at the King St ramp. I love this restaurant. Will go again!
