My boyfriend and I love to try different restaurant all over the world every time we got the chance, we been to the best restaurant here in New York ( Bouley, my fave, Le Bernardin, daniel, Morimoto etc. ) and decided to celebrate our 1st New Years dinner locally at 42, made reservation at the early time availability which is 5:30 pm or the 9:30 pm coz that the availability on the open table. So we got seated with the host and the place was pretty empty and didnt have the skyline view, come to find out they change the restaurant set up , the used to be bar now was the restaurant and the old restaurant with the the view now function as the events room. so we stayed and then we decided to do the 6 course meal so we can try more things, you have to pick you apps, pasta, entree and dessert and the waiter said that the 2 other course would be chef's choice appetizer and dessert. the first course that the waiter said came, the chef's choice; its a sorbet with 2 kinds of fish roe (orange color and black ) and some dehydrated green vegetable, come to find out its the amuse bosche that they served to all the tables wether you pick the 6 course meal or ala carte, followed with my choice of appetizer which is the crudo of cod which i liked and he got octopus dry then pasta course i got the egg yolk ravioli had he have the potato then entree i had duck and he have the steak which is okay then "d'' chef's choice dessert came and it was another sorbet, quince sorbet with full of cheese after cheese, i mean parmesan slices then on top is grated parmesan then quince sorbet then toasted parmesan on top, to be fair the quince sorbet i did liked it then my choice of dessert it was the New Macau came with little of crumble sponge cake topped with sorbet bigger than the sponge cake and 16 drops of some syrup with violet flowers, as if it is a sorbet dessert, for the $95.00 per person they charged is not worth it! Too bad were not coming back nor recommending it to our foodie friends.
Have been here for lunch two times this month. They have stopped serving lunch a while ago, but now do offer that option once again and they serve lunch here Mondays thru Thursdays. It is an excellent experience with a menu of limited options but filled with great food all over in a location that is near the heavens and at a reasonable price. Kudos for the salad and entrée choices. Great ingredients and service that is five stars!! Now, parking is complimentary with your lunch there!! Keep up the good work! Thank you!!
This is an especially wonderful restaurant, the service was as impeccable as I would expect from a Ritz Carlton -- the food was absolutely delicious -- we had the tasting menu. The desserts were FABULOUS as well -- all in all in was a true Dining Experience.
From the moment we stepped into the Ritz Carlton we were treated like royalty the service was fantastic. The whole staff was very attentive to our needs. Granted we were there on a Wednesday night, but still we have no complaints at all. The food was delicious. And the drinks were definitely not watered down. The view is gorgeous at night. We will definitely be back in the future to dine here!
This was the first time going back to 42 in a few years. My wife and I went for our anniversary. We used to eat here before we got married a few times a year. So as soon as we were seated we were disappointed. The restaurant dining room is now for party's only that means you lose the best seats with the real view people come for. We were now seated in what was the bar area. Small and confined feeling with the bar still taking up the room the bar was covered in things from brunch. Heat lights and other tools.
The food and wine list were small. Most wines were way overpriced. I understand dibble markups but once you go past that it's crazy. So the food my wife got the special a fish sushi it was great but small portions. I got the octopus great flavor but small portion and not that tender good dish overall. My wife then got the 7 spice pork great dish. I ordered the veal loin it was bland and had a funny taste to it I told the waiter he took it back and brought me the fliet mingon this was a excellent dish cooked perfect and great flavor. We finished with to solid desserts but good not memorable.
Overall food is good to very good. Wine list lacking and overpriced. Service is top notch. But the best part of 42 was the double windows overlooking the LI sound and NYC those views are now gone and you get to look at the woods. Don't think I will be going back anytime soon. This place has lost its luster not to mention a guy eating with a baseball cap on. Not a thing to see when out to dinner in a classy place. I hope they decided to revamp this place again for the better!
One word could sum up this review...perfection!! We ordered the tasting menu with the wine pairing , everything was an amazing delight! The staff was very knowledgeable and professional, that's very rare to find now a days even in the finest restaurants. We had the one special table rooftop with breathtaking views and the staff including the chef made us feel like we had our private VIP dining room. Candlelight with open fresh air made it so special !
“42” restaurant is a superb establishment with a variety of well-prepared culinary masterpieces. Being a half-way decent cook (not quite the chef), I am quite particular about what I am consuming. In addition to being eye-pleasing and smelling succulent, my meals must be delicious while placing my senses into overdrive. “42” has consistently exceeded my dining expectations. I have been a patron at least five times now, with no disappointments.
The view is really the thing here. The service is very good as is the food. The dessert especially seemed to be trying a little too hard: too many parts, too much preparation. The drinks and wine list is nice. While it's not inexpensive, it is a reasonable value and great for a special occasion, particularly if you live or work in White Plains. Overall I would certainly recommend it.
The service was excellent and the view spectacular. The food was tasty and very expensive. Portions were Tiny. Be aware that the Friday and Saturday evening menu is a tasting menu, you choose four of six small plates...the chef chooses two. If you do not like the two, oh well.
Nice place for a special occasion, do not bring fussy eaters.
My wife and I have visited 42 in the past and it was hit or miss. The last time we sat in the middle of a dark room and were not wowed with the service or food. In fairness that was awhile ago and they since redecorated.
Totally different experience this time.
The service was top notch. Our waiter, Giovanni, couldn't have been more attentive or informative about everything.
The tasting menu or ala carte choices were all very tempting.
We enjoyed our food immensely and the ambiance and view were great. We had a romantic corner seat with beautiful views of the entire Hudson Valley.
If I have to be critical about anything it would be the unfortunate mural hanging on the wall. It seems to be a Andy Warhol knock off. About 20 repeated George Washington heads ( ala the dollar bill) all with gold Afros and each with a different color lipstick??? It was fun to talk about with the staff and didn't deter from our wonderful evening.
All in all, a great choice.
WE WERE CELEBRATING OUR WEDDING ANNIVERSARY AND THE EXPERIENCE WAS 5 STAR THROUGHOUT. THE FOOD WAS AMAZING AS WAS THE SERVICE AND VIEW, HOWEVER I WAS FLOORED WHEN I RECEIVED THE BILL SHOWING $67 FOR ONE OF THE EVENINGS SPECIALS. IT WAS 2 GIANT SHRIMP OVER LINGUINE WITH CLAM SAUCE. IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST SHRIMP PREPARATIONS I`VE EXPERIENCED BUT I FEEL THE SERVER SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED IT. MY WIFE ORDERED THE FISH OF THE DAY WHICH WAS MARKET PRICE, FABULOUS AND IT WAS UNDER $40.
IT WILL NOT KEEP ME AWAY, BUT I WILL CERTAINLY ASK BEFORE ORDERING ANY SPECIALS.
So 42 shut down for a while and totally overhauled everything. No more bar, their food/wine menu, layout...
So I go there for a celebratory evening with friends and I was really excited to see the changes, being that I had gone to 42 on multiple occasions prior to the changes being made.
What a disappointment...
The evening was not horrible but the changes they have done were definitely not improvements and the restaurant took a step back.
With the menu and wine selection - the dishes were small and selections were way over priced. They had so few choices for appetizers and entrées. Before they had an assortment of dishes and tapas to chose from. It was what made 42 different and classy at the same time. They stated that the chef wanted to engage more with guests and it be a more personable atmosphere. Well the chef didn't come over to say one word to my group and I..... Even after the $750 plus bill was paid.
Their layout is lacking , and you truly can't enjoy the view like you use to, because of the arrangement of the couches.
I will not be going to 42 again with the changes that have been made to this restaurant. If they change it back to something similar tothe past, then I will be there opening weekend... But I don't foresee that happening unfortunately.
42 has become more and more of an event space only. The restaurant honestly feels like more of an afterthought. The food was good and the staff was friendly, but it kind of feels like they are trying too hard to be fancy. The city view is now only accessible for private events. We went for a special occasion, and we were disappointed.
We were so excited to return to 42- it was one of our all time local favorites. We looked for the vibrant scene we remembered on ou previous visit. Our reservations were for 915 our table was not ready until after 10 The restaurant completely downsized there is no bar to have cocktails to wait for table- instead there is only a lonely lounge. The wait staff offered us appetizers- to taste-in apology which was nice. But in general the food was disappointing. A highliht was the cocktail we ordered- the staff was very gracious and apologetic about our long wait to sit. We were just so disppointed this restaurant seemed to change its focus to events, rather tahn the hip bar scene and music along with the wonderful vibrant dining scene we had remembered in the past. The music was also - regae all night-which is fine, but not at all what we had expected with our past experience. WE left disappointed Like I said the staff was really nice and the service was good. It was just everything else- it was a lot to spend to be so disappointed.
From the time we entered until the time we left we were met by staff who were competent and attentive. We were not sure what we wanted to eat but after our waiter informed us of the specials we knew right away what our choices would be. The food was excellent and the drinks were great. The music level was just right, enough to enjoy, but low enough so you could still have a conversation without yelling.
