40 Steak + Seafood
The 40 steak and seafood has 5 unique dining rooms, all named after different characteristics or industries that make North Dakota a great State. Each room has its own theme with different furniture, fireplaces, ceiling, flooring and artwork giving each room its own unique and different feel.
Overall an enjoyable experience. Expect to spend a good chunk of money and season your own food. Staff was friendly and accommodating though.
We were a table for 4 and were very happy with our experience! We ordered 3 steaks and 1 salmon entrée and each was delicious. Our female server was efficient and fun to visit with. The only complaint we had was they were out of crème brulee, and we had to order other delicious desserts!
The food was good, as it has been in the past when I've eaten there. Unfortunately I brought 3 guests this time and the service was probably as bad as it could ever get in a fine dining restaurant. Besides slow response times, barely warm lobster bisque was delivered to one guest first, then appetizers for the table. Next came 2 fish entrees to the guests that never received salads. After a waiting time long enough for a hungry guest to have eaten half of his fish entree the steaks arrived.
Our Tbone steaks were chewy. Horrible. We advised the waitress but nothing done. We had to wait 40 minutes before food arrived. Being a Tuesday night hardly any people in the restaurant. NEVER again and I will advise others not to go. I advised by phone that we were celebrating my husband's last day of work and now retired. The gentleman that answered the phone advised me my husband would get a complimentary glass of wine. That never happened!
Very small food portions for very expensive price! Ordered the tortellini and it was bland.
I really enjoy the atmosphere. Unfortunately, my steak which was ordered medium came well done. The other steaks ordered at the table were also overcooked. I would not be too concerned, but since this was the $40 40-oz porterhouse I was really disappointed. 4 of us ordered that steak. I would have requested it be re-done since it was all grey inside, but I did not have time nor did those at our table. Otherwise, the mashed potatoes and the drinks were very good. I might give it another shot, but am not really sure at this point.
Very expensive. Steak was flavorful, but small. Disappointed at the limited food menu
We had a table for 10. They were very helpful in adjusting our reservation times and number of attendees. Our waitress did a great job balancing the orders and keeping us up to date on our drinks. We all ordered steaks and seafood and it was wonderful. We ordered sides to share which was a great idea! We all got to try new things. I would highly recommend this place for special occasions and any day that ends in Y!
Overall we loved it!! It was an unexpected hit. We enjoyed the quiet, the food, and were pleasantly surprised by the decor. It was my Birthday dinner and it was special. We drove almost 100 miles one way because a friend recommended it.
You lied to us when we called to request Southern Comfort five days prior to our reservation date at your establishment.
I'm quite sure I talked with the guy with the pony tail on top of his head when I originally called to inquire about the availability of Southern Comfort at your bar. I told him if Southern was not available, we would go somewhere else for dinner. He called me back and said the
"chef" would arrange for Southern Comfort to be available when we arrived last Saturday night, 3/16/19.
However, when we did arrive, there was no Southern Comfort.
It may seem like a small and insignificant thing to you ... however, if someone would have simply gone to the local liquor store to buy one bottle of Southern ($16.00), I'm quite sure that you could have easily charged at least $8.00 per drink which would have more than paid for the outlay for someone to go to the liquor store and buy one bottle.
As it stands, we will not be coming back to a place that lies to its customers. BYW, we are from Mpls, but are in Bismarck at least 15 times/year. We were looking for a great steak place - we thought we found it at 40.
I really do not care what you think of my review .... and you're probably laughing about it.
However, I really think you are doing yourself a disservice by choosing to not listen to your customers, and also by not having Southern available when I was assured you would. It is a quite popular cocktail these days ......
So, I would NOT recommend 40 Steak & Seafood to a friend. No!
The simple things in life are what really matter. Simple honesty.
We are over 60 .... and have the money to spend for a few nice cocktails and a great steak. But nobody lies to us. We will not be back.
High prices for not a lot of food. Taste was great but not worth the price. Kids menu was small and the tortellini was awful so we ordered another mac n' cheese dish and it took 15 minutes to get it. Wait staff was less than attentive...my son spilled his drink and they didnt offer to clean it up. We had to go ask for a rag and the dirty rag then sat on the table the entire meal. I had to ask her to bring the kids Gelato as she forgot that and by the time we got it, it was half melted. Overall, not worth it.
Tons of potatoes & cheese other vegetables non existent. My husband ordered a steak that was well prepared. It came with about 4 servings of hash browns & he had a side of corn. There was hardly any corn it was mostly cheese. I had the fish special which was decent with a side of Brussel sprouts & potato au gratin. There wasn’t even the equivalent of one brussel sprout among the potatoes with tons of cheese.
Best Aged Steak Around and Service to match! You pay for high quality Prime Cuts at fair prices!
Steak was very chewy, it was like they grilled off a piece of roast beef. Not worth the $40. Have had better food at small town bars for half the ticket price. Seem to be paying for pretentious and fuss.
The junior rib eye was huge and perfectly cooked. The server was outstanding and wasn't at our table every 5 minutes but never left us hanging either. Would definitely eat here again.
Best steak ever and great service
Almost to good to share with friends to good for family
There were six of us, and the food was great. We meet every two years as a group, and we talked about going to a new place this year but everyone always wants to go to your place. I look forward to coming back, and will try to get there as often as I can even though we are from out of state.
Very expensive for the portions and quality of food served.
Our steaks were cooked correctly but truly a 3 oz. Filet mignon for $19 with no sides because each side and salad were ala cart. Prices were $4 each side extra.
Excellent food and friendly customer service.
I will definitely be back! Everything was perfect! Such a unique place.
Overall great experience! We will be back.
Atmosphere was very nice. Service very good. I had the seafood kabobs which was good. Not many gluten free options as I am celiac but staff was attentive to making sure everything was gluten free.
Biggest disappointment was my husband’s aged steak. It was $40 and was very tough. Not what we expected for that price. In addition it was $5, I believe, for a side. If not we would have paid $40 for a tough steak with not one side.
Excellent service and menu choices but overpriced .
We ate here on New Year’s Eve, the food was fine although not alot of selections offered. None of our party thought the food was extra special. The service was very disappointing, it’s like we were forgotten about and had to wait to get more water, drinks, the bill etc. The atmosphere is unique and I would go back but hopefully get better service next time.
I've been gong to 40 for many years (even back when it was East 40), mostly for special occasions because the prices are a bit higher that I spend for a "typical" night out. I have always found the ambiance very inviting and the service superb. The menu is limited to what they do best - steaks and seafood - and they do it well! Keep up the good work.
Always excellent food and great service. Great drinks in the bar. Friendly waiters and bar tenders.
Everything was great! The only heads up I would give to new comers is the fact that everything is ordered “ala cart” from the menu. Plan on $50-$60 per person.
Simply the best steak in town. The food isn’t cheap but you do get what you pay for, and the service is absolutely outstanding
I was surprised the aged ribeye was tough, and a little over done for med-rare.
This was recommended by our hotel and we were very impressed with the quality of food and price. Our waiter was very friendly and professional. We will recommend this restaurant to all our friends. Bravo.
Hostess Amy was attentive, entertaining and accommodating. FANTASTIC
We had a fantastic experience here! The food was amazing! The service was great! I couldn't think of one negative thing to say about it!
My husband and I were given some money for our anniversary and we decided to go to 40 Steak and Seafood. Our experience was not stellar. The restaurant is very lovely and overall the prices are reasonable, but not when the prime rib (ordered medium) is so tough that it can hardly be cut with a serrated knife. I showed our server how tough the meat was and asked her to let the chef know. They did not even offer to make it right. I was not trying to get a free meal, but it would have been nice to at least have gotten an apology from the manager. I know all restaurants have "off" nights, but we will probably mark this one "off" our list.
It is a very good place to go for an aged steak at a reasonable price. Make sure you try the daily specials.
Our reservation was made online web page. We arrived 20 minutes early and were seated immediately. Service is prompt and courteous and wine menu is good. We prefer steak and the famous dry aged steak is worth the price and more than plenty to eat. It was a perfect dinner date with my wife in relaxing pleasing environment.
We took our family out for a quiet and private dinner. They succeeded our experience and expectations. Food was amazing and our privacy was respected. Great service!!!
Seat 2 people next to a group of 12, not good. 40th wedding anniversary and had trouble talking to each other
First, food was great. A bit expensive, but quality made it worth it. The service was erratic and very slow. The restaurant was not very busy. Our server would disappear for 20-30 minutes. We sat down at 6:30, ordered fairly quickly (like 15 minutes) and then weren’t served for well over an hour. Shouldn’t take 2 1/2 hours for a few steaks, no matter how good the food is.
Love the dining experience, food, service and friendly atmosphere.
