39 Rue de Jean - Charleston
I usually don’t leave a review, unless we enjoyed our experience. However, this was suggested by a good friend who knows I LOVE French food. I ordered mussels, and my husband, the charcuterie platter. They were both delicious, except for the fact they arrived together with the Manhattan clam chowder and Truffled potato soup we ordered as well. Wrong! I specifically asked her to space the courses accordingly, so we had time to enjoy everything. We split the coq Au vin, (I originally ordered the Salmon Bearnaise but cancelled it before it was sent because we were definitely being rushed) of which I didn’t have one bite. Taylor, our server, obviously had no interest what so ever in our experience of a $200+ meal. Disappointed and rushed! We aren’t 20% tippers (more like 40-50%) and I’m sad to say, the 20% we left was not earned. Sorry, and good luck.
Food was very good. Waiter was very pleasant and attentive. Entree took forever to be served - excuse was large party - which is a pet peeve of mine.
Lovely & relaxed eating pace
We went to dinner there for a graduation celebration and it was a great time! Our reservation was for 7:15 and we were seated promptly. The food was amazing. My mom and I both had the broiled sea scallops which were perfect and my sister loved her dish. The atmosphere was sophisticated but also comfortable and the service was spot on. I’d definitely go again the next time we are in Charleston.
The one problem I had with this restaurant was they charged me two dollars to change my mashed potatoes to fried potatoes. I just feel like when you pay $28 for an entrée that does not include salad you should be able to change your side without an additional charge. Also I thought five dollars was a little pricey for a bottle of beer.
Enjoyed the meal. We had a large party and the service handled it well, and with patience. We ordered from the lunch menu, and had no complaints. It can be noisy at times. Would recommend.
Rue de Jean is one of my favorite restaurants in Charleston. Consistently good food and friendly service.
A bit loud sometimes, but still enjoyable. I have been coming here for decades. The mussels are outstanding! I would definitely recommend this restaurant to a friend.
Sorry this was a miss for our group because of the service, followed by the food. Really dismissive server for our special occasion dinner and really ignored us most of the evening. Food was underwhelming. We’ve been to their sister restaurant Virginia’s (and love it) but wanted to try 39 Rue. There are so many great restaurants in Charleston, I don’t think I’d go back.
We had a really nice evening and a great dinner. Good service, everyone was friendly, polite, and courteous. We had the mussels and they were fabulous!
Our dinner was great! That rabbit of yours is legendary! The scallop dish was delicious! Our waiter, a delight! You cannot go wrong with Rue de Jean!
My new favorite in Charleston!
Visiting Charleston and wanted a good French restaurant. We were not disappointed. Excellent food and service.
Fantastic Mother’s Day meal. The trout and shrimp were delicious.
The salads were very good but the sandwich was not. It was cold and hard. We were unable to order sushi (one reason we came) .
Delicious. Great ambiance. Good service. Nice adult beverage selection
Fabulous duck confit hash at Sunday Brunch
Simple dishes well prepared. Terrific service, French bistro ambience, interesting crowd, prices entirely reasonable.
Please try the blue cheese and bacon (lardon) mussels. They are magnificent!
Absolutely flavorless food, despite relatively high prices. The place needs a thorough cleaning, too; it just seems tired in all respects.
Mussels Aoili are awesome! It wasn’t too crowded so we had a wonderful graduation celebration!
Overall it was wonderful. The service was absolutely amazing. The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 was for the vegetable cream mussels that I had. I had them previously and they were amazing this time they were barely edible.
The food was amazing and so was our server Brody, it was a little noisy but I think it was because there was a graduation and some sort of formal event happening in the area and so many came to celebrate at the restaurant. Highly recommend.
This was perhaps the 4th or 5th time we have eaten at Rue de Jean -- has always been great, and honestly, it just keeps getting better! Food was outstanding. Steak superb. Atmosphere is relaxed and upbeat. Looking forward to enjoying Rue de Jean on our next visit to Charleston.
Although the Brunch Menu was posted outdoors for all to see, we were disappointed to find that it is only available on Sunday!!
More urban than what one would expect in a French restaurant. Wait staff was efficient, but in a hustle/bustle way. Industrial noise level made for a frustrating dining experience. Maybe request outdoor dining for a more relaxed, personal experience.
Great French food. Started with French Onion soup & escargot. Main course trout almondine. Good size portion to share with purée potatoes and crisp harcourt verti.
39 Rue de Jean is a long time favorite of ours...never disappoints!
The food was good but not hot enough. I noticed some service issues at tables around us. I decided to eat the food because I would have had to find the waiter to return it to get it warmer.
It was our best meal in Charleston. We both ordered the escargot, and the mussels and bouillabaisse. Everything was fantastic. Excellent t cocktails as well. Will definitely go back!
Very noisy but great food, service good and has the french bistro feel to it
Our waiter, Jason, was excellent and knowledgeable about the food and drinks. The outdoor seating is comfortable and made for a wonderful atmosphere. I would recommend this dinning experience to anyone.
We had a great experience at Rue De Jean. Our waiter (think his name was Bryce?) was outstanding. He recommended a dinner cocktail that was excellent! The food was wonderful. Will be back!
Great, great food. Excellent service. We sat outside on the covered porch, which created a less noisy environment that sometimes occurs within the popular restaurant. I had dessert for brunch and I was beyond pleased. My friends had different brunch items, and they were all pleased. We also had the tartar and mussels! Seriously great food...presented nicely and we found the price very fair for the amount and types of food/beverages we ordered.
Thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. Would recommend. Charcuterie was outstanding.
Rue de Jean has been one of our favorite restaurants. This time there were 2 issues - our food was very salty. We ordered a $50 bottle of wine. They did not have it, so we ordered a $55 bottle of wine. They did not have it so we had to order a $65 bottle of wine. I was not happy about being charged $65.
We ate dinner with my parents before our daughters’ dance recital. Erin set things up so we were ready to order and move through dinner quicker than normal. Molly our server was a delight! She checked on us just enough. Rue de Jean has been a favorite of ours for years because we trust the food and service to be amazing every time. Thank you!!!
Our party of 6 had lunch there on a Saturday since it was impossible to get an evening reservation before our departure from Charleston. Everyone enjoyed their chosen meals and we all were satisfied with the time we were able to spend chatting and eating. Would love and will plan to return for an evening meal. Make reservations well ahead of time.
We are still asking ourselves why this place was so loud! We could barely hold a conversation. The food was good, but the servers seemed stressed. Sadly we won't be returning.
