Exceptional French restaurant. They offered authentic French dishes and did not disappoint. Clams and coq au vin were prepared perfectly, and the ambiance and decor was just right for a true French dining experience.
A great experience! Great food and service and a fun way to see the city and experience the charm of Charleston.
Great relaxing post-church brunch- always great!
The Eggs Norwegian and the Caesar w/ Salmon we’re tremendous
Food including escargot, mussels, and steak was really good. The cheese plate was quite small. For some reason, the restaurant was playing obnoxious 80s hard rock music, which would be much better suited for a dive bar and not a French bistro. It was a bit strange. One lady at the table next to us even complained to her server about the music. Blasting “Girls, Girls, Girls” typically does not make for a romantic evening. The biggest letdown though was that our server brought our check to our table while we still had a half a bottle of wine and food on our plates. This was disappointing as my wife and I were trying to enjoy our anniversary. It seemed as if the goal was quick table turnaround. If you just stepped off the cruise ship or just drove in from Ohio, this is the place to go!
Disappointed frisée salad not on menu. One of your best French dishes.
Steak au poivre should have a sauce , not just peppered surface. We lived in France for 20 years.
Enjoyed Red curry mussels because I love hot but were described as a bit spicy
Finally, a restaurant that doesn’t rush you through every course to get you out. This was fine French dining in a relaxed atmosphere.
Excellent meal and wonderful service!
We took our daughter and new son-in-law (from out of town)who was generally unfamiliar with French cuisine. We were all very favorably impressed with our food which was accompanied by a truly outstanding bottle of wine. Could not have had a more enjoyable evening, aside from having no room for dessert!
Delicious meal and nice ambience! Really enjoyed the mussels prepared with shallots, and the shrimp Provençal. Our server Gwendolyn was outstanding. The socially distanced patio dining in the quaint alley was a perfect spot. Highly recommend.
The food was delicious and the service was great; unfortunately we were seated next to a loud and obnoxious 4 some who spoke and cursed very loudly. The restaurant did offer to move us to another table, but our meals had just come out so we stayed put. I did mention their conduct to the manager when we left. She was very apologetic and told me she’d say something. It’s a shame people can be so rude and obnoxious and spoil the atmosphere for others.
Great food, great service, great music.
We always enjoy Rue de Jean. It has the ambience of a NY city bistro and the food is reliably good and varied. Great bar area. We rarely get past the brasserie burger but the oysters are fabulous too.
We had a lovely dinner at 39 rue de Jean. I enjoyed the truffled potato soup, while my husband loved the warm goat cheese salad with beets. We split a charcuterie plate and our son enjoyed the steak frites. The server was attentive, but not annoying, and the French 75 was heavenly. Thanks for a great evening.
Mussels (1/2 price on tuesdays) delicious! My duck and the purée was out of this world, my daughter’s salmon excellent! The drinks were amazing! Price was what I expected from a good French restaurant, nothing disappointing. And the bread was amazing!!!!
The onion soup was less thanwarm, my dinner was barely heated...disappointed.
Great meal and friendly staff welcomed us. Enjoyed outdoor meal and was able to have our dog with us.
Overpriced for the quality of food. Service was great though.
4/3/21 Easter dinner on Spring break
Food and service was great. All the mussel choices are very good. Try the hand cut truffle frites...
We picked this place from surfing online. Looking over the menu etc. When we got the menu seemed a little limited.
Our waiter was very friendly, I would say he was good at his job.
The burger was very dry not very tasty. The eggs Benedict was ok but I dont see myself ordering again
I guess it was just a meal not much of a dining experience. Don't think we will be back.
Very attentive service and great food; mussels are outstanding here! Salads are super fresh! Love it, close to our hotel,
A must try. One of the best in Charleston. We love going there. They always take such good care of us. Great service. Fantastic food. You can’t go wrong. Can’t recommend it enough.
The food and service was outstanding! We enjoyed our experience and would recommend 39 Rue de Jean.
Amazing meal- always enjoy the food here. Appetizer- fried goat cheese salad was sooo good. Ordered the Chicken dish with capers and gnocchi- delicious. Great place for a date, outdoor seating as well. Will be back again.
We had not been back to the restaurant since before Covid. Unfortunately several of our meals were cold.
Their customer service was excellent however because there were six of us we did not enjoy getting together and our meal as much as we had hoped. Some of us were eating well our other guest we’re waiting for their meals to be redone or reheated.
A happy find on our stay in Charleston
The food has gone way down hill - not the same Rue it used to be. I had steak frites and the steak was thick versus the thin French way. It was chewy and not a good cut for the market price. Escargot arrived a mess and with the butter not fully melted or warm. A friend had salad with shrimp and the shrimp smelled horrid. They had no tuna for a nicoise. It’s been going down hill and this was just not worth it.
We had a really pleasant evening. I had the duck, which was prepared and presented perfectly. A beautiful and delicious dish. Our server was pleasant, knowledgeable and fun. Thanks very much!
Food was very good and atmosphere was good but noisy. Waiter warmed up as night worn on. Wine list needs a little work but food was very good. Overall I would highly recommend this restaurant.
The service was slow compared to their normal excellent service. The soup came out warm, but not hot.
Went late on a Sunday. Our waiter was fairly attentive although we had to wait a while after being served to get a fork. Gritty Scallops were on a bed of watery creamed spinach, steak au poivre was way over-seasoned with black pepper on very fatty ny strip. Pork chops and filet mignon were good. Onion soup and truffle potato soup were very tasty. I left a little disappointed. Was expecting more based on the reviews.
Great food, friendly staff. Will definitely be back on my next visit.
Absolutely amazing experience. The food was all sooooo delicious
The muscles were delicious
The trout was excellent and the duck was perfectly cooked
The waitress was super friendly
Good. Boneless ribs were huge more like a pot roast
The food was pretty good. Was hoping for a more intimate, authentic French restaurant, but seemed more like a French-themed restaurant.
A lot of tables and chairs were in pretty bad shape and the flooring was quite dirty.
The atmosphere was nice – the food was just OK. There are not many vegetarian choices on the menu, or kids choices. The wine list is good. The server seemed stretched very thin.
It was busy but our server was great and the food was exceptional!
Wonderful food and atmosphere. We each enjoyed the food we selected - salmon, steak, chicken, appetizers. No one in the group was disappointed. In addition to the amazing food, I commend our waiter Aaron. He was alert to the allergy listed in my profile - not only was he aware, he came prepared with an awareness of the items that would have a concern for me. Fabulous experience.
Perfect from beginning to end!!
At on their outdoor patio and felt extremely safe because of table spacing and servers wearing masks.
Food was (as always) excellent.
